🇧🇪 [MECHELEN] – 48 HOURS GETTING "LOST" IN BELGIUM’S CHARM AND TRANQUILITY
If you’re already familiar with bustling Brussels or romantic yet crowded Bruges, it’s time for a change of scenery. Try visiting Mechelen – a hidden gem that is incredibly charming and just a short train ride away from Brussels or Antwerp.
My recent 2-day, 1-night getaway to Mechelen went by gently but left me with so many beautiful memories. Let me share my itinerary for exploring this lovely little city! 👇
📍 Day 1: Strolling through cozy alleys and embracing local art
Morning: We started our first day with a leisurely stroll through the Grote Markt (Grand Market Square). The square here is spacious, surrounded by breathtaking Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Standing here, you get a full view of the majestic St. Rumbold's Tower.
Afternoon – Getting lost in peaceful alleys: After fueling up with a warm, freshly baked waffle, we decided to just lose ourselves in the city's quiet alleys. We walked through the Groot Begijnhof (Large Beguinage) – a historic, peaceful neighborhood featuring mossy red-brick houses and blooming window boxes. It felt as if time stood still there, and literally every single corner was picture-perfect!
Evening – A visit to the Theater: The highlight of the evening was stopping by the Stadsschouwburg Mechelen (the City Theater). The building boasts a magnificent interior filled with classic artistic vibes, but even just taking a photo outside as the city lights turned on was magical enough.
📍 Day 2: Lush park greenery and a riverside sunset
Morning: To start the day fresh, we spent the morning walking through Kruidtuin (The Botanical Garden). It is the largest green park right in the city center. Walking under the canopy of ancient trees, watching the Dijle River flow gently, and listening to the birds chirp felt like true therapy for the soul.
Afternoon: Before saying goodbye to Mechelen, we tried the Dijlepad—a wooden boardwalk that runs right along the river. Walking here allows you to see the backs of historical houses reflecting on the water, offering a completely unique perspective of Mechelen.
✨ A few quick tips for your trip:
Getting around: Mechelen is very compact, so the best way to explore is on foot (or by bike). Make sure to pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes!
Food & Drinks: You absolutely must try the local Gouden Carolus beer and the famous local chicken stew, Mechelse Koekoek.
A 2-day, 1-night trip isn't too long, but it was more than enough to fall in love with the slow pace of life, the friendly locals, and the blend of historic and modern beauty in Mechelen. If you are looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle, Mechelen is definitely the perfect answer! 🎒✨
