Walked to Italy today. Literally. Started the morning at the Mottets cabin in France and ended up taking a cab into Courmayeur.
Crossing the border at Col de la Seigne was easily the coolest part of the TMB so far. One minute you're walking through polite, green French valleys, and the next you cross this ridge at 2,500m and Italy just hits you in the face. It’s all jagged, wild black peaks and the massive south face of Mont Blanc looking very dramatic.
Stopped by Rifugio Elisabetta which is basically perched right under a glacier. Quite fancy staying there next time, the views are ridiculous. Further down the trail, there's this spot where two glacier rivers meet—one is totally muddy and grey, and the other is crystal clear. Looked a bit like a badly poured pint, but still neat to see.
Ended up clocking about 15km and my knees are absolutely knackered after the 900m descent. My cheap, beat-up trail runners survived another day though, despite my flatmate telling me I needed £200 boots for this. Currently in Courmayeur waiting for a massive bowl of pasta.
