🇬🇷 Naxos, Greece — Complete Travel Guide Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and one of Greece’s best destinations for a mix of beautiful beaches, traditional villages, ancient ruins, Greek food, mountains, and relaxed island life. Compared with Santorini and Mykonos, Naxos is generally more laid-back and often better value. 🌊 Must-See Places 1. Portara of Naxos The island’s iconic landmark—a huge marble gateway from an unfinished ancient temple of Apollo. It’s especially beautiful at sunset. 2. Naxos Town (Chora) Explore the whitewashed streets, Venetian Old Town, castle area, small shops, cafés, and waterfront promenade. 3. Agios Prokopios Beach 🏖️ One of Naxos’s most famous beaches, with clear turquoise water and plenty of restaurants and beach facilities. 4. Agia Anna Beach A smaller, picturesque beach with golden sand, clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere. 5. Plaka Beach Long, wide, sandy and comparatively peaceful. Great for spending an entire afternoon by the sea. 6. Halki Village A charming inland village surrounded by olive groves, traditional houses, cafés and local food producers. 7. Apeiranthos A beautiful mountain village famous for its marble-paved streets and traditional Cycladic architecture. 8. Temple of Demeter An impressive ancient marble temple dating to the 6th century BC, located near Sangri. 🏔️ What makes Naxos special? Naxos isn’t just about beaches. The island has Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades, fertile agricultural land, olive groves, mountain villages and a strong local food culture. 🍽️ What to Eat Try local Naxian specialties such as: · Naxos potatoes 🥔 · Graviera Naxou cheese · Local goat and lamb dishes · Fresh seafood · Greek salad · Loukoumades (Greek doughnuts) · Local citrus liqueur, Kitron 🚢 How to Get There The easiest route is usually Athens → Naxos. · ✈️ Flight: Athens to Naxos takes roughly 40–45 minutes. · ⛴️ Ferry: Ferries from Athens/Piraeus take approximately 3.5–6+ hours, depending on the vessel. You can also reach Naxos by ferry from islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Milos. ☀️ Best Time to Visit May–June: Warm weather, fewer crowds and beautiful beaches. July–August: Peak summer, hottest and busiest. September: ⭐ Excellent—warm sea, pleasant weather and generally fewer crowds. October: Quieter and cooler, but some seasonal businesses begin closing. 💰 Budget Naxos can be considerably more affordable than Santorini or Mykonos, especially if you stay outside the busiest beachfront areas. Renting a car or scooter can be useful if you want to explore the villages and remote beaches. Ideal stay: 3–5 days for the main highlights; 5–7 days if you want a slower beach-and-village holiday. Best combination: Naxos + Paros + Santorini makes a fantastic Cyclades island-hopping itinerary.
