Not far from the Yuanyang West Expressway, we got on a winding mountain road, a single lane, and it was winding all the way. The speed was always between 40-60 kilometers and could not go up. The altitude rose quite fast, and the ear pressure was obviously felt. There are two viewing platforms on the way to the scenic spot, but the scenery is so ordinary that it is not worth stopping. Passing by the Yuanyang Terraces Tourist Service Center, we did not stop and continued to move forward. Suddenly, we found that there were many people and cars on the roadside, which means that we have arrived at the Hanihaba Rice Field Base in Qingkou Village, Xinjie Town, which is a real terraced scenic spot.
"Hani Haba", which means Hani ancient song in Hani language, is a folk song widely spread and far-reaching in the social life of Hani people. It is a solemn and elegant ancient singing mode different from Hani folk songs, love songs, children's songs and other types. It involves production labor, religious festivals, humanistic norms, ethics, marriage and funerals, food, clothing, housing, literature and art in ancient Hani society. It is an "encyclopedia" for Hani people to educate customs and regulate life. It is known as the "encyclopedia without words" and the "living fossil" of culture. In March 2008, it was declared as the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
Hani Haba Rice Field Base takes its homonym and builds a national rice-fish integrated breeding demonstration area. "Rice-fish-duck" breeding is the traditional farming wisdom inherited by Hani people for thousands of years. Seedlings are sown and raised from February to March every year, and seedlings are planted from April to the end of May. About 3 weeks after planting, the rice turns green and fish fry are put in. One month after the fish fry are put in, ducklings are put in. From the rice filling period to the early rice harvest period, the terraced ducks need to temporarily leave the terraced fields; when the rice is harvested and the terraced fish is harvested, the ducks return to the terraced fields again. Through the swimming, feeding and excretion of fish and ducks, weed growth can be inhibited, the soil can be loosened, organic fertilizer can be increased, and the feeding amount can be reduced to ensure the quality of fish and ducks. Rice, fish and ducks coexist in a mutually beneficial way, realizing "one water, three uses, one field, multiple harvests".
Of course, as ordinary tourists, we don't need to know so much. After half a day of traveling, at the top of Ailao Mountain at an altitude of 1,800 meters, the large terraced fields that suddenly appeared in front of us were enough to soothe our long-standing expectations.
There is an observation deck on the left side of the road. It is beautiful to take pictures standing on the observation deck. If you have enough time, you can go down to the rice field to take pictures of reflections, chickens and ducks like us, which will feel better.

The village is not big, with only 65 households living on traditional planting and animal husbandry. Now, thanks to the "Azheke Plan", every household has a "tourism meal". The traditional Hani culture, four-element isomorphism (forest, village, terrace, water system), and mushroom house are its main attractions.
The mushroom house in Azheke is very distinctive. The house, which is warm in winter and cool in summer, is divided into two or three floors and is shaped like a mushroom. From the terrace, it looks exquisite and unique. In those days, the movie "Ask the West" also came here to shoot.
Azheke is an indispensable attraction when you come to Yuanyang to see the terraces.
We drove here by ourselves, which is relatively convenient. The ultraviolet rays in Yunnan are very strong, so we applied sunscreen. It is recommended to go out early. When we arrived in Azheke, it was already ten o'clock in the morning, which was a bit late.
It is the peak tourist season in Honghe Prefecture. In the parking lot, I saw several large tourist buses, most of which were sunset tour groups. After retirement, they don’t crowd scenic spots with office workers during holidays, and they don’t get stuck in traffic when they travel during off-peak hours.
The so-called Azheke Plan is actually a tourism poverty alleviation solution, and it is a mechanism for Chinese universities to help rural areas. Tourists visiting the village and buying tickets is one of the income.
The village is mostly middle-aged and elderly. In recent years, some young people have returned to their hometowns to start businesses and opened restaurants and cafes at their doorsteps. Azheke’s famous "Huotang Coffee" is one of them. However, Huotang Coffee was closed when we went there. Upon inquiry, they said that they were short of staff.
Lunch was solved in the village. This restaurant called "Red Rice Farmer" was opened by a local Hani couple. The wife doesn't speak Chinese, but she can understand what we say.
I especially like the ancient banyan square next to the water mill. Sitting under the towering trees, the spring breeze brings us freshness after we have walked out of the sweat. Go down the steps of the square and you will reach the terraced fields. Looking back from the terraced fields, you can see the mushroom houses.
