UNESCO Global Geopark

Hong Kong's hexagonal columns were formed by a large number of hot, molten volcanic materials condensing and shrinking under special environmental conditions during a violent volcanic eruption 140 million years ago. Because the rock structure and chemical composition are different from the hexagonal columns in other parts of the world, plus the wide distribution area and large diameter, it can be called a world-class geological wonder.

Great views, worth a visit with many hiking paths. But be warn, transportation is limited and a long queue waiting for the green mini bus, so arrive early. Getting back to Sai Kung town is even worst. I don't expect this from HK. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the chaotic transportation.

Hong Kong, China, is located in the northeast of Hong Kong, with an area of 49.85 square kilometers. On September 18, 2011, it was approved by UNESCO as the seventh batch of world geoparks. It consists of Saigon Volcanic Rock Park and sedimentary Rock Park in the northeast of the New Territories, including 8 scenic spots. Sai Kung volcanic rock park includes Liangchuanwan, Yugang Islands, Guozhou Islands and Qiaozuizhou 4 scenic spots, geological relics are Mesozoic Cretaceous hexagonal acid volcanic rock column joints; The sedimentary rock park in the northeast New Territories includes Dongpingzhou, Yinzhoutang, Chimen and Chizhou-Huangzhujiaozui scenic spots, featuring the strata, paleobiology, sedimentary and tectonic geological relics of the Paleozoic Devonian, Permian, Mesozoic Jurassic, Cretaceous to the Cenozoic Paleogene. The Hong Kong World Geopark is built on the basis of Hong Kong country parks, marine parks and special areas, with perfect infrastructure and standardized management systems. Precious geological relics, beautiful island scenery, diverse ecological environment, make this a natural geological museum and leisure resort.

The hexagonal pillars are fabulous. Easiest/Cheapest way is to take a minibus or taxi to East Dam of High Island Reservoir.

The scenery of Hong Kong Geopark is beautiful, there are not many tourists, many locations can be photographed, and it will be more convenient to travel to the public holiday.
