Photos of Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana)

A stirring example of the Mexican people's devotion to faith, as well as of the magnificent history of the country, the Metropolitan Cathedral rises above Mexico City in splendor. Construction began in 1573 around the remains of the original church that occupied the site, and continued for over 200 years, until it was finally completed in 1813. Because its progress spanned numerous art movements, it uniquely displays features of the Spanish Renaissance, Neo-Classicism, and Baroque architecture. You can walk on a floor of marble through its five aisles, admiring the cathedral's beautiful altars and engravings.
