It is a must see when you visit Athens. A good suggestion is to visit early in the morning. I went there in August which is high season, but if you visit around 7 am there are less people around and you can have the palace guards almost to yourself for taking photos. Don't forget to check out the famous hotel Grande Bretagne which is just off to the side of Syntagma square. Additionally, a lot of hop on hop off sightseeing busses stop in front of the square."

They had envisaged the construction of the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until about 638 years after the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. During the Roman period, this temple consisted of 104 huge pillars and was known as the largest temple in Greece and one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world. The glory of this temple was short-lived, and was abandoned about a century after the castle was built. In the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, building materials were widely excavated to supply construction projects elsewhere in the city. Despite this, a large part of the temple remains today, especially the sixteen of the original giant pillars, and it is still part of a very important archaeological site in Greece."

Athens Travel Tips

About Athens

Athens is a city that gets its name from the Greek goddess of wisdom - Athena. It is the birthplace of European civilization. Despite thousands of years of wear and tear from wind and snow, it still exudes a unique charm. When you go to Athens, you will have the opportunity to see great ancient temples and exciting marketplaces. The grandiose achievements of the centuries enshroud the city at every turn. Athens is surrounded on three sides by mountains. The last side faces the Aegean Sea. The city is built around the Acropolis. Even though the Acropolis has already endured 2,000 years of wind and rain, warfare and modernization, people are still shocked by the remaining, albeit damaged, temples. Take a stroll through historic Pláka and choose one of the many restaurants to indulge in some mouthwatering Greek cuisine.
