The historical and cultural heritage of Shaxi Ancient Town is rich, and it preserves the unique Ming and Qing dying buildings, the deep ancient alleys, the ancient bridges and the former residences of historical and cultural celebrities. The Qipu River, which was excavated in the Song Dynasty, runs through the town. The river is wide and there is an island in the river. It is a major feature of the ancient town of Jiangnan. The ancient houses on both sides of the river are patchwork and row upon row. The streets along the river stretch for 1.5 kilometers, telling the prosperity of Shaxis former trade. There are three ancient stone arch bridges on the river (both Taicang City cultural relics protection units): Liji Bridge, Yongqiao Bridge, and Yixing Bridge, all with typical Qing Dynasty architectural style. Shaxi is also a place where humanities gather. Wu Xiaobang, an outstanding dance master of our country, was born here. He blended dance and life ingeniously and became one of the pioneers of Chinese new dance art. Combined with the traditional culture of the ancient town, Shaxi has carefully created poetry museums, woven pavilions, dance halls, and children's funhouses, so that visitors can enjoy leisure and entertainment as well as some knowledge and culture.
