Nagoya Castle was completed in 1615 by the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Topped with golden shachihoko, votive tiger-fish roof devices, and boasting the largest floorspace of any tower keep, Nagoya Castle and its magnificent Hommaru Palace were operated as a military facility. Nagoya Castle was Japan’s first castle to be designated a National Treasure. Even after wartime air raid destruction, it was deemed historically important enough to be designated a National Historic Site. Restoration work being carried out is returning Nagoya Castle to original condition.Most castle buildings were destroyed in the air raids of 1945, including the castle keep and the palace buildings. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle keep dates from 1959 and - before its closure in May 2018 - contained a modern museum with exhibits about the castle's history. The park surrounding the castle keep features two circles of moats and impressive walls with corner turrets. #japantrip 📍Nagoya Castle, Nagoya, Japan A must visit destination while visiting Nagoya in Japan would be the famous Nagoya Castle. The castle was beautifully built, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and is a work of art. It is not too crowded at the castle’s ground during our visit, lovely place with serenity and tranquility. We spent a few hours strolling around the castle, take a lot of touristy photos. The ambiance of the castle was peaceful and calm, lovely place to contemplate and have a peace of mind. The Nagoya castle is indeed a stunning and awe-inspiring monument to Japanese history. Would recommend to visit this place if you’re travelling to Nagoya, truly a beaut to behold!

#thingstodo You can see the amazing castle from close by, and also go walk inside the old Nagoya residence of the Shogun which had a really pretty traditional Japanese interior (no furniture though). It's surrounded by a park and a gravel field that was really spacious and the whole place was not crowded when we went on Tuesday afternoon, even though it is Chinese New year, which was nice. Small entry fee, tickets can be bought at the main gate.

After winning the Battle of Sekigahara and subsequently establishing the Edo Shogunate, the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered in 1610 that the samurai who had been enemies begin the construction of Nagoya Castle. The golden shachihoko (dolphin-like creatures) that adorn the two ends of the castle's ridge, the claim to the largest castle tower in history, the splendid and luxurious Honmaru Palace, the expansive Ninomaru Garden, and other structures of Nagoya Castle all demonstrate the formidable strength of the Tokugawa family. The castle is also surrounded by high walls, giving it fortress capabilities. Over the 260 years of the Edo period (1603-1867), Nagoya Castle, as the stronghold of the Owari Tokugawa family, flourished and prospered without end.

This residence of the Owari Tokugawa family, one of the three feudal lords, was built in 1675 and has the largest castle tower in history, and the Hommaru Palace, which is luxuriously magnificent to the extreme, has been designated as a special national historic site. The first generation castle tower with five floors and five steps was completed in 1672, and was the latest layered tower at the time, with golden shachi (mythical creatures) decorations at both ends of the ridge. The main building was destroyed in the air raid in 1945, the existing castle tower was rebuilt in 1959, and the Hommaru Palace has also undergone restoration work, continuing its past glory in a new form. The Hommaru Palace, as the residence of the Owari feudal lord and the government office of the clan, was completed in 1615. It is a representative Shoin-zukuri (a style of Japanese residential architecture) building in Japan and is known as the highest masterpiece of the modern castle palace, and is designated as the first national treasure along with the castle tower. The ceiling paintings, screen paintings, and metal ornaments inside are extremely luxurious and dazzling, and they change depending on the function of each room. The paintings by Kano Sadanobu, Kano Tan'yu and other Kano school painters are extremely gorgeous, each with a different theme, and the moment you step into the room, you are shocked by the powerful aura.

When the Tokugawa clan emerged victorious upon various upheavals in olden Japan, he ordered the reconstruction of the castle and in 1620, the Owari branch of the Tokugawa lineage resided, until the Meiji restoration where the royal family seized control and temporarily resided by the Imperial family, until 1930 where it was returned to the city government of Nagoya. The special feature that is available in the castle is the paintings and rural of various auspicious animals and faunas, and the treasury collection of various antiques. Restoration works are still ongoing and we will get to explore more of the treasuries in the future.

The cherry blossoms in Nagoya usually bloom in early April, and I have come to Japan at this time to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms in Nagoya. After entering Nagoya Castle, the first thing you see is the very beautiful scenery: the cherry blossom buds are white, like pure quail eggs, and the blossoms that have opened are like flower fairies, growing vigorously on the big trees...
