Carcassonne is a city-like enclave, where every stone exudes history. Beyond the grand fortifications, there are numerous sites definitely worth including on your itinerary. Here are some of the key attractions that will help you immerse yourself in this fascinating city: The centerpiece of the fortified city is the Château Comtal (Count's Castle). This imposing 12th-century citadel, once home to the Viscounts of Trancavel, is a kind of "fortress within a fortress." A visit to the Château Comtal offers a unique opportunity to stroll through its ancient halls, climb the watchtowers for panoramic views of the entire Cité, and learn about the medieval fortifications. This is a must-see experience for history and architecture buffs. One of the jewels of the Cité is the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus. This church, founded in the 11th century, impresses with its harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The basilica is particularly renowned for its magnificent 13th-14th-century stained-glass windows, considered some of the most beautiful in the south of France, as well as its exquisite sculptural decoration.
