To see the wine-making process firsthand, you'll want to travel in September, as this is the month the wineries harvest their grapes. But otherwise, you'll have an enjoyable holiday anywhere between May and November.

While you're in town, why not visit La Cité du Vin? This modern museum takes you through the city's history of winemaking, and you can even bring a few things home from their souvenir shop and wine cellar.

You can also visit the Wine & Trade Museum, which isn't far from downtown, about a 30-minute walk. Gaze at the impressive collection of wines here, and book a wine-tasting experience for an exquisite time.

A rainy day in Mosel Valley, Germany

Mosel Valley is located in Germany and borders France and Luxembourg. While Germany is renowned for Oktoberfest and its beer, this country produces outstanding wine too.

Most notably, this valley is the country's oldest wine region, and it delivers perhaps the best Riesling in the world. It's not Germany's largest wine region, but if it's quality over quantity you're seeking, then you'll find it here.
