We all love flying, but we should be conscious of our CO2 emissions

We all love flying, but we should be conscious of our CO2 emissions

Obvious statement alert: we love to travel. But - to double up on obvious statements - we all need to travel more responsibly. And the more that we jet-set, the more difficult it is to keep our carbon footprint low. Aviation alone accounts for at least 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, so those of us who love to travel need to take notice.

So, we at Trip.com have teamed up with CHOOOSE to help remedy the problem. And while you should be familiar with what we do, it might be the time to introduce our sustainability enablers…

Based in Oslo, Norway, CHOOOSE work with numerous companies - travel-related or not - to build tools to help offset their carbon usage.

CHOOOSE accelerates access and adoption of climate solutions across a range of key technologies - from nature-based solutions to carbon removal to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Trip.com and CHOOOSE calculate CO2 emissions per passenger based on factors such as aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, and flight distance, in accordance with the latest industry guidelines. This calculation helps to inform the cost to offset the journey, as well as guide which itineraries may be producing the least amount of CO2 per passenger.

So how do you select the carbon offsetting option when booking?

When you book a flight with us, you'll see the option to carbon offset for a small cost.

Your contribution helps to balance out the impact of the flight's emissions by funding carbon-reducing projects.

CHOOOSE ensures your money goes directly to climate-protecting initiatives around the world.

Firstly - Trip.com doesn't take a cut. It goes straight to the good people at CHOOOSE.

For every contribution made, CHOOOSE retains a small service and technology fee of just €0.70 per booking that covers their running costs. Even seemingly small contributions go a long way and will typically offset more than their calculated footprint.

The actual donations per booking go to interests that the carbon professionals at CHOOOSE have rigorously certified as carbon offset causes. These are:

Emissions are calculated based on factors like distance, capacity and cruise time. Since most emissions come from take-off and landing, non-stop flights are often the greenest.

Aircraft type
Modern aircraft are up to 30% more fuel-efficient than older models.

Flying direct
Take-off and landing use the most jet fuel on every flight. Flying direct means you only do this once.

Airline rating
An overall rating of how well an airline is performing on multiple CO2-reducing factors.

Passenger load
Fully booked planes have more passengers, which means less CO2 emission per passenger.

Cabin class
More passengers can fly in economy class seats because they take up less space, which means less CO2 emission per passenger.

Jane Sun, our CEO at Trip.com Group, said: "As part of our mission to lead the global transformation to modern and more environmentally-responsible travel, we have partnered with CHOOOSE to contribute towards highly effective CO2-mitigating projects around the world. This makes it easier and simpler for Trip.com users to offset their flight’s CO2 emissions during checkout on our platform and travel more responsibly."

Andreas Slettvoll, CEO at CHOOOSE, said: "We see an increasing demand from individuals and companies around the world wanting to understand the CO2 emissions from their travel and to address these emissions through solutions like carbon removals, offsets and sustainable aviation fuel. That's why we are thrilled to team up with Trip.com to offer integrated climate options as a seamless part of their booking process, making climate action more accessible for people worldwide."
