Tourist Attractions in Larnaca

Church of Saint Lazarus/Agiou Lazarou: Like the Biblical figure who rose from the dead, this 9th century church dedicated to St Lazarus was lovingly restored in the 17th century. The supposed burial place of Bishop Lazarus himself, here you’ll discover four beautiful domes, a golden pulpit, ornate Baroque woodcarving, and the spooky underground tomb of Lazarus. Just across the courtyard, you’ll find the Byzantine Museum which will help visitors better understand the history and religious importance of this unique site.

Larnaca Fort: Built in the 14th century, this imposing Ottoman-era fort was used as the main line of defence for the city. During the British colonial rule, the fort was turned into a prison and the gallows were in use until 1948 – you can find out more about the fort’s fascinating history at the Medieval Museum on the second floor. From the top you’ll find wonderful views across the Mediterranean and to the city behind you. Across the road you’ll also find Larnaca’s Grand Mosque which dates from the 16th century. It’s worth checking out the ornate gravestones in the mosque’s small cemetery.

Hala Sultan Tekke: Just outside Larnaca lies a very important religious site – a white mosque dedicated to Umm Haram, Mohamed’s aunt who died upon the site in 648 AD. The fourth most important popular pilgrimage location after Mecca, Medina and Al Aksha, in 2002 it was discovered that the site of Hala Sultan Tekke has been inhabited since Neolithic times. In fact, some archaeologists believe the tomb is a Neolithic monument.
