In Huangshan, you can start your day inside a cable car and end it with your legs crying out for a rest after hundreds of steps. Hiking in Huangshan works a bit like that; you don't need to hike up the entire mountain to spend a good part of the day walking. In these mountains, you can cover the essentials in one day or stay overnight at the top and plan a two-day route.
At Trip.com, we’ve put together both itineraries, and explained which cable car you’ll want to take, how much you’ll need to walk, and which sections might get a little more serious.

You don't need to hike up the entire mountain to go hiking in Huangshan. For a first visit, the most practical option is usually to take the cable car up and walk around the peaks, viewpoints, and trails in the upper area. This way, you make the most of your day and save your energy for the peaks, which is what you'll want to do anyway.
Route | Approx. duration | Difficulty | Best for |
Yungu ⬆️ peaks ⬇️ Yuping | 1 day | Moderate | First visit. It allows you to cross a good part of the high area and see several of Huangshan's great landscapes without climbing from the base |
Yuping ⬆️ peaks ⬇️ Yungu | 1 day | Moderate | A classic route that starts near the Guest-Greeting Pine and passes by several viewpoints before descending via the Yungu slope |
West Sea Grand Canyon | Approx. half a day | Moderate-high | Those looking for more trekking, elevation gain and one of the most spectacular landscapes in Huangshan |
Eastern Steps ⬆️ | 3-4 hours ascent* | High | Travellers who want to hike up Huangshan and make the ascent part of the experience |
Western Steps ⬆️ | 4-6 hours ascent* | High | Hikers with a good level of fitness looking for a more challenging climb and lots, and lots of stairs |
Complete Huangshan hiking route | 2 days | High | For those who want to sleep up high, walk at a more leisurely pace, and combine more areas with sunrise and sunset |

Which one to choose? For a first-time visit, Yungu ⬆️ peaks ⬇️ Yuping is a very comprehensive option. You gain altitude quickly with the cable car, cross the mountain on foot, and finish on the other side. This way, you see a lot without spending half a day just getting to the top.

To explore Huangshan in one day, one of the most comprehensive options is to go up via Yungu, walk across the high area, and come down via Yuping. It's about 12 km, and you should allow for around 6-7 hours of walking. Because, let's be honest, you don't need mountain experience, but don't underestimate the number of stairs you're going to be climbing up and down.
The route would be: Yungu Cableway > Shixin Peak > Beihai > Flying-Over Rock > Bright Summit > Aoyu Peak > Hundred-Step Stairway > Welcoming Pine > Yuping Cableway
Key details | What to expect |
🥾 Distance | Approximately 12 km |
⏱️ Time | About 6-7 hours of walking, plus time for cable cars, breaks, and potential queues |
📈 Difficulty | Moderate. Well-maintained paths, but with lots of stairs and elevation change |
🚡 Ascent | Yungu Cable Car, via the north slope |
🚡 Descent | Yuping Cable Car, on the southern slope |
⛰️ Highest point | Bright Summit, at around 1,860m |
👟 Recommended for | A first-time visit and travellers used to walking for several hours |
If you have two days in Huangshan, you can combine the Yungu area, the West Sea Grand Canyon, and the Yuping side without having to rush from one cable car to another. It's a more comprehensive route than the one-day option and, what's more, it allows you to sleep on the mountain to try and catch the sunset and sunrise.
The Huangshan administration recommends a very similar two-day route, entering via Yungu, exploring the West Sea Grand Canyon on the first day, and continuing towards Yuping the following day.

Route: Yungu Cableway > Shixin Peak > Beihai > Paiyun Pavilion > West Sea Grand Canyon > scenic train and Tianhai.
🏨 Where to stay? The Huangshan Bai Yun Hotel is practical for this route because it's in Tianhai, very close to Bright Summit and Aoyu Peak. You won't have to add a huge hike at the end of the day just to get to your accommodation.

Route: Bright Summit > Aoyu Peak > Hundred-Step Stairway > Welcoming Pine and Yuping Cableway.

If there is one trail that tends to appear in almost every photo of Huangshan, it is the West Sea Grand Canyon. Here, the paths literally hang between granite spires, and the elevation gain is noticeable from the very first few minutes.
Route: Paiyun Pavilion > First Ring > Second Ring > canyon floor > scenic train and Tianhai.
In fact, this is the route officially recommended by Huangshan for exploring the canyon while saving time and effort.
West Sea Grand Canyon usually closes during the winter, but the exact dates can change each season. In 2023, it closed on 1 December and, following winter maintenance, reopened on 14 March 2024.
Would you prefer to go with a guide? Book this private tour of Huangshan, which includes the West Sea Grand Canyon and pick-up.

For the adventurous, if you want to hike up Huangshan on foot, you have a few options. These are the Eastern Steps, from Yungu Temple, and the Western Steps, from Ciguang Pavilion. Mind you, we are talking about several hours of climbing stairs before you even start exploring the peaks.
Route: Yungu Temple > White Goose Ridge and connection to the upper area.
Once you're at White Goose Ridge, you can link up with the trails in the upper area and continue towards Shixin Peak and Beihai.
Route: Ciguang Pavilion and ascent via the Yuping slope.
You really feel the effort here. I wouldn't choose the Western Steps just to save on the cable car. It only makes sense if hiking up is part of the plan.

Yungu and Yuping are the two most useful cable cars for exploring Huangshan from the south entrance. Instead of going up and down the same way, you can use one to go up and the other to come down. This turns your day into a traverse across the mountain.
Cable car | Area and route | Approx. price | When to choose it |
Access via Yungu Temple, with connections to Shixin Peak and Beihai | 80 CNY (≈ £9.00) in regular season | Very practical for starting a first visit and saving energy for exploring the peaks
Access via Ciguang Pavilion, near the Welcoming Pine and the Yuping slope | 90 CNY (≈ £10.10) in regular season | Ideal for finishing the trek or starting directly at the Welcoming Pine and this part of the mountain |
🎟️ Entrance fee: accessing the Huangshan Scenic Area costs 190 CNY (or about £21.40) per person during the regular season. Please note that cable cars and internal transport are paid separately.
Hiking in Huangshan is of moderate difficulty if you use the cable cars, but it can become demanding on longer routes. The problem isn't usually the distance; it's the changes in elevation and, above all, the stairs.
A lot. Huangshan has more than 63,000 stone steps and about 85 km of stepped paths. You won't be walking all of them, of course, but it gives you an idea.
And the elevation gain is nothing to sneeze at either. There are 77 peaks over 1,000 m, and Lotus Peak, the highest, reaches 1,864.8 m. On Tiandu Peak, what's more, some sections of stairs approach an 85-degree incline. In short, distance here is deceptive. A few kilometres can end up really taking a toll on your legs.
Do you need to be in good shape to climb this mountain?
It depends on the route:
📍 Trip.com tip: for the main routes, you don't need to hire a guide, as the trails are well-defined. It might be worth it if you want to do a more complex route or prefer to have the itinerary, timings, and transport organised in advance.

Are there easy hiking trails in Huangshan? Yes, although "easy" is relative here. You will still encounter stairs and changes in elevation, but you can use the cable cars to stay in a specific area and avoid the longer hikes.
Route | Itinerary | Difficulty | What you'll see | Best for |
🌲 Route from Yungu | Yungu Cable Car, Shixin Peak, Beihai and return | Easy-moderate | Granite peaks, pine trees, viewpoints and classic Huangshan landscapes | Those who want to walk a little further without crossing the entire mountain |
🌲 Route from Yuping | Yuping Cable Car, Welcoming Pine, nearby viewpoints and return | Easy-moderate | Welcoming Pine and landscapes of the Yuping slope | Short on time, looking for a more relaxed visit, or simply prefer to cut down on the walking |
Autumn is usually the best time for hiking in Huangshan, mainly due to the more pleasant temperatures and lower humidity. However, every season changes the mountain; take a look, for example:
Season | What to expect |
🌸 Spring | A good time to visit, although there is more humidity, fog and rainy days |
☀️ Summer | Very green mountains, but also more rain, humidity and visitors |
🍁 Autumn | ⭐ One of the best times to visit for the most pleasant weather and autumnal landscapes |
❄️ Winter | Snow and ice can make routes tricky, as well as causing seasonal closures |
Where to stay in Huangshan depends above all on your route. For a day trip, the most practical option is to stay near the South Gate, in Tangkou. If you are going to spend two days hiking and want to see the sunrise, it is much more worthwhile to sleep directly on the mountain.
It's the option I would choose for a 2-day route, especially if you want to combine the West Sea Grand Canyon with Bright Summit, sunrise, and sunset.
Hotel | Area | Best for | Approx. average price |
Tianhai, near Bright Summit | 🌄 Sunrise and route from Yungu to Yuping | 1,585 CNY (≈ £178)
Beihai | 🌲 Shixin Peak, Beihai and routes from Yungu | from ≈ £192
Xihai, near Paiyun Pavilion | 🏞️ West Sea Grand Canyon and Danxia Peak | from ≈ £244 |
For the two-day route we suggested earlier, the Bai Yun Hotel fits well. It's in Tianhai, near Bright Summit and Aoyu Peak, so you don't have to add a huge hike at the end of the first day just to get to the hotel.
If you are doing Huangshan in one day, Tangkou is more practical and, what's more, much cheaper. You sleep near the access buses and can start early the next day. One option is the Kyriad Marvelous Hotel Huangshan South Gate, with average prices from around £31 and very close to the south access.
