Kunming Airport Lounges: Locations, Facilities, Opening Hours & Access

Kunming is a truly special city, nestled deep in the southwest of China. It’s not without reason that it’s nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring”, thanks to its mild climate all year round. This is partly because Kunming sits at an altitude of 1,900 metres above sea level. Just like the city itself, Kunming Changshui International Airport is also located high up on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

Kunming Changshui International Airport is located 24.5 km north-east of the city at an altitude of 2,100 m. The city, with its approximately 8.6 million inhabitants, has an airport that opened in 2012 and features just one terminal. An expansion, the S1 satellite terminal, was also inaugurated on 18 July 2023.

Kunming Changshui Airport may only have one terminal and its new extension, but it is an airport of superlatives. In 2024, over 47 million passengers were handled here. This made Kunming Changshui the tenth-largest airport in China in terms of passenger volume at the time.

✈️ Kunming Changshui Airport Lounges & Terminals

The airport is a real mega-airport, as just over 49 million passengers were handled at Kunming KMG in 2025. KMG Airport is a major hub for China Eastern, Kunming, Ruili, Sichuan, and Hongtu Airlines, as well as Lucky Air. This airport was completed in just three years.

Construction work began in 2009, and the grand opening was celebrated as early as June 2012. However, the terminal at KMG Airport is not just huge; it also stands out visually. It was designed by the architectural firm SOM and the engineering firm Arup.

When it comes to lounges, you'll find a particularly large number of airline lounges, as well as VIP and First Class lounges, thanks to the numerous airlines that use Kunming Airport as a major hub.

🛬 Kunming Airport Lounges: Locations & Opening Hours

Terminal 1 is almost 550,000 m2 in size. This impressive area made it the second-largest airport terminal in China when it opened in 2012. The terminal has a total of 66 gates with direct access to the aircraft. In total, the terminal even has 88 gates.

The terminal has a total of 6 floors, 3 of which are above ground and 3 below. The 3 underground floors are dedicated to all arrival and departure arrangements (e.g. baggage reclaim, taxi ranks, bus and metro lines, etc.) to and from the airport itself.

When it comes to the Kunming Changshui KMG lounges, levels 2 and 3 are the ones to watch. In 2026, you'll find the following lounges here:

🛬 KMG Airport's S1 Satellite Terminal and its lounges

A new satellite terminal was opened at Kunming Changshui Airport (KMG) on 18 July 2023. The terminal is designated as S1 and features 42 gates. 38 of these are equipped with direct access to the aircraft. The S1 terminal at Kunming Airport is located approximately 1,600 m north of the much larger T1, and there are no lounge facilities here.

The two terminals are connected by a tram line. This runs every 4 minutes and can be accessed via T1 on level B2. The journey time between the two terminals is around 6 minutes. The entire tram line is 1.88 km long in total and even runs partly underneath the aircraft taxiways leading to the runway.

🚬 Kunming Airport Smoking Lounges

To get straight to the point, there are no smoking lounges at Kunming Airport KMG. You can smoke outside T1 in designated smoking areas. Furthermore, Kunming Airport also has smoking rooms in T1. One of them is located in the international departures area between gates 73 and 75.

You can find another one at Kunming Airport near Gate 18, between the shops and the toilets located there. If you head towards Lounge V8, you will find another smoking room in the area of Gates 29-45. There is also a smoking room near the toilets in the area of Gates 46-63. Since vaping in China also falls under smoking regulations, the same rules apply to these products (only permitted in smoking zones or rooms).

At Kunming Changshui Airport, the same lounge access requirements apply as at all other Chinese airports. In concrete terms, this means you have several options for visiting a lounge at Kunming Airport. These include, for example:

• You are a member of a club like Diners Club
• You have an access pass like Priority Pass or DragonPass

🛏️ Hourly Lounges at Kunming Airport

Then there are the typical sleeping pods, which you will also find at many other Chinese airports. At Kunming Airport, they are called NAPHUBS Sleep Cabin and are located on the 4th floor in the departures area. The sleeping pods are equipped with everything you need for a comfortable night (eye mask, earplugs, etc.). In addition, you will also find showers and private toilets there.
