Transport to and from Kunming Airport

Metro Line 6

The metro is by far the most convenient way to get to the centre of Kunming from the airport. Line 6 (the Airport Express line) connects the airport directly to the heart of the city in just 25 to 35 minutes for only 5 to 6 RMB (~£0.65).

The metro station is located directly inside the airport, just a few minutes' walk from the arrivals hall. Trains run every 10 to 15 minutes, from approximately 6:20 am to 11:00 pm. Pretty convenient, right?

📌 Trip.com tip: If you're staying near Kunming South Railway Station, take Line 6 to Juhua, then transfer to Line 4 to reach the station. If you're heading towards Dian Lake or the Haigeng area, check which station is closest to your accommodation: Line 5 serves several areas near Dian Lake, while Line 3 will get you to the Western Hills area.

By taxi or DiDi

Just like everywhere else in China, a taxi is the ideal solution if you have lots of luggage, are travelling with the family, or are arriving after the metro has closed. The convenience is unbeatable – you just hop in and enjoy the ride, simple as that!

The fare from the airport to Kunming city centre is around 80 to 120 RMB (approx. £9 to £13) for a 40 to 50-minute journey, depending on traffic, with motorway tolls included.

📌 Trip.com tip: try using DiDi instead of a regular taxi! The app is available in English, the fare is shown upfront, and payment is handled automatically through the app—including via WeChat Pay, Alipay, or a compatible bank card. It's much more convenient, especially when you arrive with luggage!

⚠️ Always decline offers from unofficial taxis when you arrive. Instead, head straight to the clearly marked official taxi ranks.

Estimated taxi / DiDi fares

  • Airport → City Centre (Dongfeng Square): 80–100 RMB (~£9–£11)
  • Airport → Kunming Railway Station: 90–110 RMB (approx. £10–£12)
  • Airport → Green Lake / 翠湖: 100–120 RMB (approx. £11–£13)
  • Night surcharge (after 11 pm): a small increase in the per-kilometre rate

Night surcharge for official taxis (11 pm–6 am): +20% on the pick-up fee and per-kilometre rate; DiDi prices may vary based on demand.

Shuttle bus

Kunming's airport shuttles are a great alternative to the metro, especially if you want to be dropped off right near your hotel without having to change lines.

Six lines serve the city's main districts and train stations from level B1 of the Terminal 1 arrivals area.

Buses generally depart every 20 to 40 minutes depending on the route, with varying schedules. Some shuttles run late into the night, particularly those heading to Kunming Railway Station, for around 25 RMB (~£2.75) per person.

The main routes serve key locations including Kunming Railway Station, Xiaoximen, Kunming South Railway Station, various bus stations, and several city-centre hotels. Be sure to check your route and schedule with airport staff before hopping on board.

📌 Trip.com tip: the shuttle bus is particularly convenient if your hotel is on one of the routes; you can hop off directly at the nearest stop without having to drag your suitcases through the metro.

Car hire

As with any city surrounded by a stunning region to explore, hiring a car is a fantastic option if you want to discover Yunnan at your own pace. What's on the agenda? The terraced rice fields of Yuanyang, the Dongchuan plateau, Fuxian Lake, and even the ethnic markets in the surrounding villages. All these sights are much easier to reach by car than by public transport.

In China, you drive on the right, but traffic in Kunming can be heavy during rush hour. Foreign travellers must hold a Chinese driving licence or a temporary Chinese driving permit to drive legally in the country; an International Driving Permit alone is generally not sufficient. It's best to use a car for trips outside the city rather than for getting around the city centre.

How much does it cost?

Airport rental rates vary depending on the type of vehicle. Here are some indicative prices:

  • Small cars: from ~250 RMB/day (~£27)
  • Mid-size cars: from ~350 RMB/day (~£38)
  • SUVs: from ~450 RMB/day (~£48)
  • Vans: from ~600 RMB/day (~£65)

  1. Search for your vehicle: head over to the "Car Rental" section on Trip.com, select Kunming Changshui Airport as your pick-up location, and enter your dates.
