Visa-Free Travel to Spain for Short Stays

If you’re a citizen of a Schengen Area countryEuropean Union (EU) member state, or European Economic Area (EEA) country (such as Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein), you do not need a visa to enter Spain. You can stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period with just a valid passport or national ID card.

Many non-EU countries also enjoy visa-free access to Spain for short stays (tourism, business, or family visits). This includes travellers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil, among others. Under the Schengen Agreement, you can stay in Spain and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa.

However, starting in 2025, travellers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This online authorization costs €7 and is valid for three years. It is not a visa, but a security check required for short stays.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa to travel to Spain?

Citizens of countries not listed under the visa-free agreement must apply for a Schengen visa before travelling to Spain. This includes nationals from China, India, Russia, Nigeria, and many others. The Schengen visa typically allows stays of up to 90 days within 180 days and covers tourism, business trips, or visiting family or friends.

To apply, you’ll need to:

  1. Fill out a visa application form.
  2. Provide a valid passport (with at least three months’ validity beyond your planned departure date).
  3. One photograph (recent, passport size, colour, white background)
  4. Proof of residence in the UK. Printed proof of immigration status + share code from: View and prove your immigration status: get a share code - GOV.UK
  5. Last 3 month bank statement to proof of sufficient financial guarantees: £100 per day of stay and person, with a minimum of £905 per person regardless of the intended duration of the stay.
  6. Round-trip ticket booking (airfare, train, bus or cruise).
  7. Proof of accommodation.
  8. Travel insurance valid for Schengen area with a minimum coverage of 30.000 €, including repatriation.
  9. Employer or University letters to confirm your employment and student status issued within ONE month of the application date.
  10. Attend an appointment at a Spanish embassy or consulate in your home country.
  11. Pay a visa fee of around €80 for adults (€40 for children aged 6–12).
  12. Children under 18 years old travelling with parents also need to provide
    1. Copy of birth certificate or adoption certificate.
    2. Copy of parent's passports and visas, if applicable.
    3. Notarised authorisation of both parents or notarised authorisation of the parent who does not travel with the minor.

Processing times vary but typically take 15–30 days, so apply well in advance.

Longer Stays: Work, Study, or Residency

If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you’ll need a long-term visa or residence permit, even if you’re from a visa-exempt country. Common types include:

  • Work Visa: For those with a job offer from a Spanish employer.
  • Student Visa: For enrolling in a Spanish university or long-term course.
  • Non-Lucrative Visa: For retirees or individuals with sufficient savings to live in Spain without working.
  • Golden Visa: For investors who purchase property worth €500,000+ or make significant financial investments.

These visas require additional documentation, such as proof of income, health insurance, and background checks. Applications are handled by Spanish consulates, and processing can take 1–3 months.

Special Cases

  • UK Citizens: After Brexit, UK passport holders can visit Spain visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For longer stays, a visa or residency permit is required.
  • Diplomatic or Service Passports: Some countries have agreements allowing visa-free entry for official passport holders. Check with your local Spanish embassy.
  • Refugees or Stateless Persons: Specific rules apply; contact Spanish authorities for guidance.

Where to Apply Spanish Schengen Visa

Most travellers apply for visas through:

  • Spanish embassies or consulates in their home country.
  • Visa application centres (e.g., VFS Global or BLS International) authorised by Spain.

For Schengen visas, you must apply in the country where you’ll spend the longest part of your trip. If visiting multiple Schengen countries equally, apply where you’ll arrive first.

Here’s a table listing Spanish diplomatic missions and visa application centres in the UK. Note that visa applications for Spain are typically processed through BLS Spain Visa Application Centres, which are authorised by the Spanish government.
