🏘️ Must-Visit Districts in Marrakech

Marrakech is not a one-sided city, and that is the trick. It is divided between historic areas steeped in tradition, modern neighbourhoods with a different rhythm, and more elegant areas designed for slowing down.

And of course, depending on where you go, the experience changes quite a bit, so getting to know the neighbourhoods of Marrakech is key to deciding where to stay in Marrakech and which tourist areas best suit you.

🧿 Marrakech Medina: the historic and tourist heart

Entrance to a street in the Marrakech medina, next to baskets of colourful spices and dried flowers

The medina of Marrakech is, let's be honest, the city's great magnet. Here you'll find the souks, the palaces, the walls and that chaotic atmosphere that might throw you at first, but ends up getting you hooked.

💡 A souk is a traditional market in the Arab world, usually outdoors or in covered streets, where everything from spices and textiles to handicrafts and everyday goods is sold.

The thing is, every street is a little spectacle: spice stalls, artisans working live and riads hidden behind discreet doors that give nothing away… until you step inside. But if you're wondering what to do in Marrakech, almost everything starts here. Staying in the medina means experiencing the city from the inside, with everything close at hand and without relying so much on taxis.

Mind you, a word of advice: it’s worth getting lost without rushing and accepting that your GPS will sometimes give up.

🔥 Marrakech Kasbah: tradition, calm and authentic corners

Historic walls of Marrakech seen from a lush garden under a clear sky.

Many people pass the Kasbah by, and, to be honest, it's a fairly common mistake. This historic quarter, right next to the southern walls, has a much calmer atmosphere than the more central medina, but without losing that traditional feel you were looking for. Everything here moves at a different pace, with wider streets, less noise and a real neighbourhood feel that is very welcome.

The Kasbah is home to gems like the Saadian Tombs, small local cafés and riads with great value for money. In short, if you fancy staying near the centre but without the constant hustle and bustle, this neighbourhood fits the bill perfectly.

🛍️ Gueliz: modern Marrakech

Cityscape of Marrakech with ochre buildings, palm trees and traffic at sunset

After the hustle and bustle of the medina, Gueliz is another world. Everything here is more orderly, more open and, to put it plainly, more Western.

International restaurants, trendy cafés, designer shops and art galleries coexist in this modern area of Marrakech, which many travellers appreciate, especially if they are looking for comfort. Furthermore, hotels in Gueliz tend to be more spacious and offer more modern amenities, something you'll notice after an intense day of sightseeing. And mind you, it's not just for sleeping: it's a great place to go out for a quiet dinner or have a drink without the chaos of the historic centre.

🌴 Hivernage: luxury, gardens and tranquillity

Traditional Marrakech architecture with palm trees and Moroccan-style buildings

Finally, Hivernage is in a league of its own. It is the city's elegant district, known for its wide avenues, manicured gardens and luxury hotels in Marrakech. Here, the pace slows down, the atmosphere is more exclusive and everything feels a little more sophisticated.

As if that weren't enough, it also hosts some of the most exclusive nightlife, with bars and clubs popular among travellers and locals looking for something a bit more relaxed than the medina.

⭐ Top 5 Activities and Landmarks in Marrakech

Marrakech blends it all effortlessly: history, gardens, architecture and everyday scenes that captivate you without warning. Of course, the idea isn't just to tick off monuments, but to experience the city between one visit and the next.

🌿 Majorelle Garden

Majorelle Garden in Marrakech with blue buildings, cacti and a central fountain

The Majorelle Garden is a breath of fresh air in the middle of the hustle and bustle, and that’s no joke. Intense colours, exotic plants, and that instantly recognisable blue that stays etched in your memory.

The thing is, even though it's very touristy, it still works because the contrast with the medina is stark. It's ideal for going first thing in the morning and wandering around without rushing.

  • Approximate price: Around £12
  • Standard opening hours: 08:30–18:00
  • Ideal for: switching off, taking photos and slowing down the pace

🏛️ Bahia Palace

Interior courtyard of a Marrakech palace with white arches, a central fountain, and traditional mosaics

Let’s be honest, the Bahia Palace is a gem. Peaceful courtyards, intricate mosaics, and wooden ceilings that force you to keep looking up the whole time. Plus, it’s not overly large, so you can explore it without feeling overwhelmed. Mind you, watch out for peak hours, as it tends to get absolutely packed.

  • Price: £6
  • Opening hours: 09:00–17:00
  • Ideal for: architecture and history lovers

🔥 Jemaa el-Fna

Night view of Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech with illuminated stalls and bustling crowds

Jemaa el-Fnaa square is pure Marrakech. By day, it’s chaotic, noisy and somewhat bewildering. As evening falls, everything changes. Food stalls, musicians, street performers and an atmosphere that’s hard to fully explain all appear. In short, it’s one of those places you have to experience, even if only for a little while.

  • Price: free
  • Best time: from 6 pm onwards
  • Ideal for: trying local food and feeling the city's energy

📌 In Jemaa el-Fnaa you can find street food stalls, musicians, storytellers, performers and an atmosphere that changes completely from day to night, capturing the most authentic energy of Marrakech like few other places.

🕋 Koutoubia Mosque

Detail of a traditional door in the Marrakech medina next to the avenue, with the Koutoubia Mosque in the background

The Koutoubia Mosque is the city's great icon. You cannot visit the interior if you are not Muslim, but the truth is, you don't need to. Seeing it from the outside, especially at sunset, is worth it in itself. Furthermore, its location makes it a good landmark for getting around the centre.

  • Price: free
  • Opening hours: exterior accessible all day
  • Ideal for: photos, peaceful walks and understanding the silhouette of Marrakech

For the Koutoubia Mosque, it is recommended to dress respectfully:

  • Shoulders covered
  • Trousers or skirts below the knee
  • Avoid wearing vest tops or very tight clothing

🌊 Menara Gardens

Menara Pavilion reflected in the pond with palm trees and the Atlas Mountains in the background

A simple plan, but a very rewarding one. The Menara Gardens are perfect for escaping the noise for a while, taking a leisurely stroll and enjoying one of the most beautiful views in the city, with the pond in the foreground and the Atlas Mountains in the background.

It’s not the most spectacular garden in Marrakech, but of course, it has the most important thing: calm, space and fresh air, especially at sunset.

  • Access and visit: Free
  • Ideal for: strolling, taking photos and slowing down the pace away from the medina

Good location, friendly staff. Would not order food again in hotel as it is pricey and not very fresh comparing to restaurants around. Visited from the UK, think this hotel is max 3* and overpriced. Clean and tidy rooms.

Sorry for the long review, but I wanted to be as informative as possible and share the information I would have liked to know before booking. This was my 5th trip to Marrakesh and my first stay at Savoy Le Grand. I was quite nervous booking after reading some negative reviews, but overall I had a very pleasant experience. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi, we were warmly welcomed by Salah (concierge) and the Moroccan tea man in reception. From check-in to check-out (4 days later), all staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Everyone we encountered spoke Arabic, French, and English, which made communication very easy. The foyer is beautiful, and the grounds are extremely well cared for—even more beautiful than expected. That said, there is ongoing construction and upgrades, which are not mentioned on the website. This is currently their quiet season, and the main construction is above the reception building, which is being extended upwards. Noise started daily around 9:15am, drilling around 9:38am, and finished around 6:30pm. Estimated completion is 1 May 2026. If you request a room near the second smaller pool, the noise is much less noticeable. The noise is louder and echoes more around the main pool due to the square layout. The hotel has four pools: two outdoor and two indoor. One indoor pool is heated and includes jacuzzi jets. There is also an additional indoor jacuzzi at the spa, charged at MAD 250 per person for one hour. There are three à la carte restaurants on site: Moroccan, International, and Italian. Directly outside the hotel are a supermarket, Paul, Chilli’s, and Papa John’s. Please note that outside food is not allowed inside the hotel. There is an ATM in reception and direct access to Menara Mall, which closes at 10pm. Special thanks to Nabil at reception, who did an excellent job checking us in. He listened carefully to my needs and arranged early check-in to a ground-floor room close to the restaurants, spa, and gym, with a garden and pool view. Soundproofing from the pool area was good, although hallway noise does travel. The grounds are beautiful, but the ground-floor rooms occasionally had a sewage smell, which I’ve also experienced at other Moroccan hotels. We did experience a few issues with our first room (heating not working, leaking fridge, slow-draining sink). Without us needing to complain, Soukayna from guest relations came first thing the next morning and immediately arranged for us to move to a beautiful suite. This level of customer service, care, and attentiveness is exactly what you expect from a 5-star hotel. In the evening there’s live entertainment music in the bar and outside a light & water fountain display. The suite was stunning—very spacious, with a separate living area, two balconies, lots of storage, mini fridge, large sofa, king-size bed, two TVs, kettle, coffee machine, safe, bathrobes and slippers. The bathroom had two sinks (standard rooms have one), plenty of toiletries (no washcloths), a large shower with both handheld and waterfall options, and excellent water pressure. There wasn’t much space to hang items, and there is a bidet hose beside the toilet. Thank you to the head cleaning lady for the final touches and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness. I’d like to thank all the staff for providing us with a wonderful stay. I love the Moroccan people—they are humble, kind, and always willing to help. Despite the construction, I achieved my goal of relaxation and a short break. This is now my new favourite hotel in Marrakesh, and I will definitely return and recommend it to friends and family

It was rly amazing, the Hotel looks so impressive inside and you can discover so much. The stuff is very helpful and kind. What i not liked. - the security stopped me and asked if i am a guest i found it a bit of insulting. At the end he not even apologized for asking. - we booked 2 rooms. instead of bringing both of us in each room they brought me and my friend to my room and just after asking they setuped the room for my friend - i used the minibar and drunk one beer after i wanted to pick the 2nd one i figured out someone drunk it already and putt it empty in the fridge. My luck i could solve the issue quickly with the stuff and i not had to pay it. But at this price just disappointing. Overall we had a great stay and it was very comfortable in the room and the park is great so also the cocktails and food.  If i would come back, yes with my Girlfriend a bit longer to discover more whats hidden in this Magical Hotel

I had a fantastic stay at this hotel near the Marrakesh main train station super convenient location. The service was excellent from start to finish. Breakfast was amazing with plenty of fresh options, and the dinner buffet offered an incredible variety of delicious dishes. The swimming pool was a great place to relax, and the staff were always friendly and attentive. Truly a great experience!

This is a long-established five-star hotel, located next to ”Sleepless Square.” There are a few parking spaces in front, and dedicated reception staff. We arrived early, and they prepared mint tea and snacks for us. The room was large and clean, and the breakfast was plentiful. The staff were constantly attentive, refilling water, cleaning, and checking on us – very thoughtful. However, the price of nearly 2000 RMB per night is a bit expensive. Before we left, the staff helped us with our luggage and retrieved our car; we gave them a 20 DH tip each, and they were very happy.

Dear Sofitel Marrakesh Team, As a loyal guest who has been staying at Sofitel Marrakesh for the past 15 years, I want to express my continued appreciation for the high standard of service, comfort, and hospitality your hotel consistently delivers. My experiences have always been thoroughly enjoyable, which is why I continue to return year after year. I wanted to share some constructive feedback regarding the pricing for non-resident guests visiting the pool. I was surprised to see the cost set at 1000 MAD for an afternoon visit. Having recently visited several top-tier 5-star hotels in Dubai — including venues such as the Aura Skypool — I found their pool access prices significantly more reasonable, despite offering similarly or even improved premium experiences and amenities. fully appreciate the need to maintain exclusivity and quality, but I believe a more accessible pricing structure would be more suitable for guests visitors while still preserving the luxurious experience that Sofitel is known for. Thank you for taking this into consideration, and I look forward to many more memorable stays in the future. Warm regards, Soufiane Maadad

A super comfortable hotel with very friendly employees who gave us good service and were attentive to everything. We also wanted to find out about various quad tours, camel tours, dinner shows and they took care of everything and above all at reasonable prices with charming people on each excursion. They work with serious people who make you trust. Thanks to them we have spent an unforgettable vacation with my partner. I would repeat with this hotel. Thank you very much!!!

I wouldn’t recommend this hotel, the reception staff are very rude ,we called the reception in the afternoon to send someone to fix the AC ,no one was sent ,we came back to the hotel around 2 o’clock in the morning, the security guard stopped us and made us wait until the receptionist came to check our documents ,(we asked again for the AC technician),Marrakesh is beautiful city but this hotel has the power to ruin your stay.

I had a fantastic four‑night stay while in town for Marrakech half marathon. The service from the staff stood out — everyone was friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout my visit. It made the whole experience feel smooth. The hotel is conveniently close to several restaurants and bakeries, which made grabbing meals and snacks incredibly easy, especially on busy race days. Being able to walk everywhere was an added bonus. It was an excellent stay, and I will return next year for another marathon event.

We stayed there for one night because of its proximity to the airport and we must catch an early flight next morning. Thought it was just a hotel offering convenience but it is far more than that. It has all the facilities that guests can enjoy a holiday or a leisure break there, e.g. a very clean, comfortable and big room; the balcony is big enough for two chairs and a table where guests can enjoy the view of garden and the lovely swimming pool; a bar of vibe. Did appreciate the restaurant staffers' hospitality. Its breakfast starts from 6:30am so provides much convenience to guests like us who need to fly out in early morning.

🌇 Marrakech, a City of Endless Energy

Jemaa el-Fna square at night, with its illuminated stalls and bustling crowds

The truth is that Marrakech doesn't have a pause button. It doesn't matter what time it is, there's always something going on. It could be the sound of drums drifting through a square, the scent of spices wafting from an impromptu stall or the lights starting to flicker on as the heat eases off a little.

The thing is, Marrakech is experienced with all five senses, day and night, with a constant energy that hooks you almost without you realising.

🌙 Nightlife, terraces and shows

When the sun goes down, Marrakech doesn't switch off, not by a long shot. The thing is, the city changes its rhythm and, suddenly, the squares fill up, the terraces come alive and the rooftops start to take centre stage.

And you don't need to head to a club to enjoy the night either: just head up to a rooftop, order something cool and watch as Marrakech lights up little by little.

Plus, there are shows that just happen on their own. Impromptu musicians, street performers, and stalls that never stop serving food create such a lively atmosphere, especially around Jemaa el-Fnaa.

🍽️ Moroccan cuisine and local experiences

Travelling to Marrakech and not eating well is almost impossible. After all, the food is just as much a part of the trip as the monuments.

You can easily go from a street food stall to a traditional restaurant without any fuss, and in both cases leave more than satisfied. Here is the key: try things without fear and let yourself be guided by what you see being cooked right in front of you.

Traditional dishes you absolutely have to try:

  • Tagine: a slow-cooked stew of meat or vegetables with spices; there are a thousand versions and they all work.
  • Couscous: the Friday classic, light yet very tasty.
  • Pastela: flaky pastry filled with meat, almonds and a hint of sweetness; it’s more surprising than it looks.
  • Harira: a thick, comforting soup, perfect for when night falls.
  • Kefta skewers: spiced grilled meat, simple and addictive.
  • Snails: very popular at night stalls; it’s no joke, they’re addictive.
  • Mint tea: more than just a drink, it's almost a ritual.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit Marrakech

🚗 Day Trips from Marrakech

Moroccan landscape with the Atlas Mountains, camels in the desert and historic coastline

Marrakech is what happens inside the city, yes, but its location makes it a starting point for changing scenery in just a few hours and discovering completely different landscapes.

Depending on your plans (and your time, of course), you can go from the hustle and bustle to nature, the desert, or the sea without too much hassle.

🏔️ The Atlas Mountains: nature and Berber villages

To start with, the Atlas Mountains are the classic getaway, and it's no joke. Mountains, green valleys and Berber villages where time moves at a different pace. And that's where you understand another side of Morocco, much quieter and more authentic.

  • Distance: 60–90 km depending on the area
  • How to get there: organised tour or car with driver
  • Must-dos: Ourika Valley, Berber villages, waterfalls and mountain views

🌵 Agafay Desert: a nearby getaway

The Agafay Desert is perfect if you're looking for a desert experience without travelling too far. It's not quite the Sahara, to be honest, but it more than delivers if you're after arid landscapes, calm, and a sense of total disconnection.

  • Distance: around 30 km
  • How to get there: private car or half-day tour
  • Must-dos: camel ride, dinner under the stars and sunset views

🌊 Essaouira: coast and bohemian atmosphere

Afterwards, Essaouira completely changes the vibe. A coastal city, a peaceful medina, a bohemian atmosphere and a breeze that is most welcome, especially when the heat in Marrakech turns up. And on top of that, the food is wonderful.

  • Distance: around 190 km
  • How to get there: bus, car or full-day excursion
  • Must-dos: walled medina, fishing port, beaches and fresh seafood
