Huangshan Train Stations: Where and How to Take a Train?

Author's Profile Picture
Huangshan Train Stations

Huangshan has four railway stations, and the newest one is less than two years old. Opened on 26 April 2024, Huangshan West Railway Station is just 21 km from Mount Huangshan, but around 100 km from Tunxi, the city's historic centre.

That's right! It's an easy detail to overlook when booking train tickets. With the historic Tunxi Station, the major high-speed rail hub at Huangshan North, the newer Huangshan West Station and Yixian East Station serving the ancient villages, Trip.com can help you choose the right station for your itinerary.

Huangshan railway stations at a glance

Four railway stations serve the Huangshan area, each with a different role:

  • Huangshan (Tunxi): The historic station in the city centre
  • Huangshan North: The main high-speed rail hub and by far the busiest station
  • Huangshan West: Opened in 2024 and the closest station to the mountain
  • Yixian East: Opened in 2023, with convenient access to the ancient villages of Hongcun and Xidi
📌 Trip.com tip: Never assume that a station with 'Huangshan' in its name will automatically be the closest to the mountain. Despite its name, Huangshan West is around 100 km from Tunxi and is located in a different district.

The four stations are spread across the region because of its geography. Mount Huangshan, Tunxi and the ancient villages in Yi County are in different areas. The high-speed rail network has also developed line by line, rather than being built around a single central station. Quite a spread, isn't it?

Let's look at each station in more detail.

Huangshan Railway Station (Tunxi, city centre)

This is the oldest of the local railway stations, located in the heart of Tunxi, just around 2 km from the famous Tunxi Old Street. It's a convenient option if you're staying in the historic centre and travelling light.

However, the station only handles a handful of conventional trains each day, serving destinations such as Beijing, Hefei and Nanjing. Since the expansion of the region's high-speed rail network, most services have moved to Huangshan North Railway Station, around 15 km away.

How to get there

💡 Trip.com tip: Just 2 km from the old town, the station is easy to reach on foot or by a short taxi ride, which usually costs less than CNY 15. However, it is the least convenient of the four stations for travelling directly to Mount Huangshan, which is around 60 km away.

Facilities at Huangshan Railway Station (Tunxi)

  • 🎫 Traditional ticket counters, familiar to anyone who has travelled by train in China
  • 🍜 A limited choice of places to eat near the station
  • 🧳 Left-luggage facilities, handy if you want to explore the old town before your train
  • 🏧 ATMs close to the station, near the station square
  • 📶 Wi-Fi in the small waiting hall, although high-speed internet is not guaranteed
  • 🚨 Important: Tunxi's old railway station handles only around six trains a day, so check the timetable well in advance. Also, most high-speed services to Beijing, Hefei and Nanjing actually depart from Huangshan North Railway Station, not here.

Huangshan North Railway Station

Opened on 28 June 2015 alongside the launch of the Hefei–Fuzhou railway line, Huangshan North is now the second-largest high-speed railway station in Anhui Province.

With seven platforms, 13 tracks and more than 100 trains a day, it handles most of the tourist rail traffic in Huangshan, rather than the city's central railway station.

Located in Tunxi District, around 15 km from the historic city centre, it serves the Hefei–Fuzhou and Hangzhou–Nanchang railway lines, as well as the new Chizhou–Huangshan line.

How do I get there?

👉 From Huangshan Tunxi International Airport to Huangshan North Railway Station, a taxi takes around 25 minutes and costs CNY 30–50.

To reach the foot of Huangshan Mountain, take a shuttle bus from the station's bus terminal to the Tangkou Tourist Transfer Centre. The journey covers around 50 km and takes approximately 50 minutes. Buses run every 30 minutes between 9 am and 7 pm.

How do I buy a train ticket?

  • On Trip.com (recommended): Book quickly in English, with your e-ticket linked directly to your passport. There is no need to visit a ticket counter.
  • Through the 12306 app: China's official railway booking platform. It is useful, but the interface is primarily in Chinese.
  • At ticket counters or self-service machines: Huangshan North has ticket counters where foreign travellers can use their passports for ticket-related services. Self-service machines generally do not support foreign passports. Most travellers with e-tickets do not need to collect a paper ticket. Simply present the original passport used to book your ticket when entering the station and boarding the train.

Facilities at the station

  • 🍜 A range of places to eat: McDonald's, KFC and several local noodle restaurants.
  • 🧳 Left-luggage facilities and waiting areas: Spread across two floors, with an additional underground level.
  • 📶 Free Wi-Fi and hot water dispensers: Useful facilities commonly found at Chinese railway stations.
  • 🚌 Adjacent bus terminal: Direct shuttle services to Yungu Temple and Ciguang Pavilion, with two departures a day for each destination and a journey time of around 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • 🏧 Cash machines: Available on different floors, with foreign bank cards accepted.

Huangshan West Railway Station: the newest station

Opened in April 2024 alongside the high-speed Chizhou–Huangshan line (125 km, with trains reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h), this station is a convenient option for travellers who want to get closer to the mountain.

The journey to Mount Huangshan covers around 21 km and takes 30 minutes by road, compared with 50–60 km from the other two stations serving Tunxi. This makes a real difference!

The main drawback? The station is in Huangshan District, around 100 km from Tunxi and its Old Street. This is much further than you might expect when you simply see 'Huangshan' on your train ticket. For now, it also handles fewer trains than Huangshan North Railway Station.

How do you get there?

The easiest way to reach Huangshan West Railway Station is by high-speed train from major cities in eastern China, such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing or Hefei. The station is in Huangshan District, around 14 km from the north entrance to Mount Huangshan, also known as the Yellow Mountains.

After arriving, you can take a tourist shuttle (Tourist Express Line 1) or a taxi to the north entrance of the scenic area. The journey takes around 20 to 25 minutes.

Here are the key details:

  • Distance to Mount Huangshan: around 21 km (30 minutes)
  • Distance to Tunxi: around 100 km
  • Railway line: Chizhou–Huangshan line (main terminus, with possible connections to Huangshan North)
🚨 Trip.com tip: Avoid combining Huangshan West Railway Station with a visit to Tunxi Old Street on the same day. The distance between the two makes a return journey impractical. This station is best suited to itineraries that head straight to the mountain without stopping in the city.

Facilities at the station are still fairly basic. There are a limited number of ticket counters, a small selection of places to eat and fewer shops than at the larger Huangshan North hub. This is understandable for such a new station, but it is best not to plan a long wait here between trains.

Yixian East Railway Station: Best for visiting ancient villages

Opened in 2023, Yixian East Railway Station is served by the Hangzhou–Nanchang and Chizhou–Huangshan rail routes. This small station in Yi County is particularly useful for visitors interested in the UNESCO-listed ancient Huizhou villages.

Why? It is just 8 km from Xidi Village and around 25 km from Hongcun, often described as the 'Chinese ink painting village'.

👉 If your itinerary focuses on exploring ancient villages rather than climbing Mount Huangshan, which is around 34 km away, Yixian East may be a much more convenient option than the region's other three railway stations.

Key distances to remember:

  • Distance to Xidi: around 8 km
  • Distance to Hongcun: around 25 km
  • Distance to Mount Huangshan: around 34 km

Hongcun and Xidi are among the best-preserved examples of traditional Huizhou architecture. Expect whitewashed walls, curved black-tiled roofs and cobbled lanes running alongside canals. Their picturesque scenery has also featured in several film productions.

Travelling via Yixian East rather than Tunxi can save you a lengthy road detour if your stay is focused on the ancient villages rather than climbing the mountain itself.

Which railway station should you choose for your itinerary?

It depends on what you plan to visit in Huangshan:

  • Arriving from Shanghai, Hangzhou or Nanjing: Huangshan North is the best choice, thanks to its more frequent services and wider range of connections.
  • Staying in Tunxi Old Street and travelling light: Huangshan Railway Station is the closest to the old town and is within walking distance.
  • Heading straight to Mount Huangshan without stopping in the city: Huangshan West can save you valuable travel time.
  • Planning to visit Hongcun and Xidi: Yixian East is probably the most convenient option, despite being less well known.

If you are unsure, always check the exact station name on your ticket before arranging a transfer. The four stations have similar names but serve very different parts of the region.

Many travellers use two different stations during their stay. For example, you could arrive at Huangshan North and depart from Yixian East or Huangshan West after travelling across the region from west to east.
