Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Intended to be a happy return visit after some years turned into a hugely disappointing experience for myself and my wife. Hotel is certainly not 5 star compared to others in Portugal; - bedroom acceptable but bathroom needs work on water egress from under bath after showers - toilet tissue seems to be rationed. Breakfast hot buffet not very enticing but selection of fruit and cereals fine. Two restaurant options available for evening meals - bar food or one other depending on the day of the week! Bar food menu very limited and the main restaurant very overpriced. Food quality acceptable. In general and with a couple of exceptions, we found that staff were a tad rude/abrupt on occasions (reception, night bar floor staff and golf shop in particular). Golf: Having obviously suffered from a very hot summer the course was in appalling condition with fairways and rough indistinguishable on some holes. The greens were also in very poor condition. The bad state of the course was sad to see as previous experience was so positive. We did however play one other nearby course where the greens were magnificent and fairways passable so I don’t accept Penina claim that nothing could prevent the poor state of their course given the summer weather. BTW, weather was bad!
RR Alvor Baía Resort

It was a short stay, but I will repeat without a doubt with more days, this hotel I recommend to all types of guests, especially families with children. The show of the swimming pool on the ledge, the waiters attentive to everything, well there is nothing negative.
Tivoli Alvor Algarve - All Inclusive Resort

An honest and fair review following our stay this week hoping to inform people accurately before making their bookings. For us this was our first family holiday in 6 years. On first appearance the Tivoli is a pristine resort, with welcoming front of house staff and seemingly everything we'd hoped it would be. However, it quickly became apparent, with the lack of glasses at the water station and the long queue at the bar, what was to come. The buffet restaurant was often chaos -at both breakfast and dinner - and was an unrelaxing experience wherebye we were often having to search for clean cutlery or glasses or battle our way through the sheer volume of guests trying to do the same thing - I will note that the waiting staff in the restaurants were trying their best but there were simply too many people at this resort for the communal spaces given. It does not allow for a pleasant family sit down meal that you would expect on holiday. The Salty Bar in particular was not well kept, presentation/cleanliness wise, any time after 1pm and it always felt like you were sitting in a dirty canteen. The food on offer however was generally lovely with lots of fresh salads, cheeses, breads etc but sadly the same every day so very repetitive. Many of the childrens areas seem to be neglected and in much need of some TLC and as such there isn't anything that really caters for children's entertainment outside of the pool areas - granted we didn't make use of the children's kids club but it would be nice to see some games rooms or a playground area not in disrepair. The pool area is reserved from early in the morning by people laying towels out which is definitely not the hotels fault but I did feel they could deter this from happening by placing signs around the pool area or instructing the pool attendants to remove towels from beds clearly not being used. The courtesy train into Alvor is a bonus and the kids loved it. Our room was a great size and very practical for a family of four with a separate sleeping area. Unfortunately, it did not feel overly clean at any point. Again, not the cleaners fault as they clearly had a lot to get through but still not what is expected from a 5* property. Tivoli Alvor has so much potential due to the location and beautiful grounds which has lots of lush greenery but there are some real common themes here that need addressing before it is 5* standard.
Pestana D. João II Beach & Golf Resort

Excellent and complete service, even in a low season when one could assume a decrease in the quality and availability of services. On the contrary!! Kindness and total availability, as well as the operation of the facilities. An experience to be repeated, perhaps at another time of year.
Pestana Alvor Praia Premium Beach & Golf Resort

The owners have spent money on the hotel to improve the look and appeal, although despite this there are several things that let it down. We booked a Superior sea-view room and on arrival (our room was not ready as we were early) we were informed that, our room would be on the second floor. We were then placed on the fourth floor and were assured that it was a Superior Sea-view room. The room was tastefully decorated, but a little tired with a partial sea-view - large tree obscuring the sea and with a small bathroom. First night; beds and pillows very uncomfortable, needless to say we didn’t have any good nights sleep for the week we were there (requested pillow exchanges which didn’t help). The room was very hot, twice we reported that the AC wasn’t cooling and asked for a fan which didn’t appear. Housekeeping didn’t refill the fridge with water, nor replenish teas/coffee’s. We asked several times for more water and wondered if they were chargeable? On checking with reception, we were assured they were complimentary - after this our fridge was restocked everyday. Bathroom exchange bidet and face clothes -took them away and didn’t leave replacements). With all our negatives, the location was perfect and staff where friendly.
