MainStay Suites Detroit Auburn Hills

Auburn Hills|2.61km from O'Dowd Hall
We have stayed at this location at least four times when it was Hawthorn Suites. Each visit was considered good to very good. With that in mind we booked a 2 night stay at MainStay Suites. The location is convenient, as it is between the 2 shopping spots that my wife likes (Somerset Collection and Great Lakes Crossing). I don't know if new ownership is responsible is to blame for this disappointing visit. COVID also has to have played a part as well. We had a room on the 2nd floor. Usually we stay on the top (3rd floor). On this visit we noted several things. The website lists cookware, dishware and utensils in the room details. Having a kitchen is fine, but without utensils and cookware, we were left with just the microwave and a refrigerator. For some reason the refrigerator compressor cycled on about every 30 minutes, making a knocking sound. During the first night of our stay I thought someone was knocking at our door. However, that wasn't the only reason(s) for not getting a good night's sleep. It didn't help that the bathroom faucet dripped every 10 seconds, or that a dog on the 2nd floor incessantly barked from 5 AM. Upon checking in we noted a used towel hanging from the back of the bathroom door. Complimentary toiletries was just a small bottle of shampoo. We woke up after the first night to see a police car by the front door. I guess it was due to the car break in that was a few spots from where we had parked. The usual decent breakfast was now just grab and go bags (yogurt, orange juice, granola bar or muffin) at the front desk. We have stayed at many other hotels in the past few months, and breakfast has usually been from the full range, and just what we ordered the night before. As for general housekeeping, the stairways and hallways were dirty on the first day, not so much on the second. The trash cans by the elevator were always full to overflowing, with bags on the floor. With respect to checking in and out, it was excellent. The person handling those responsibilities was wonderful.

Very clean, comfortable hotel in a great location (Great Lakes Crossing outlet mall) right off I75. Nice hot breakfast (fresh waffles!). Friendly helpful staff. Clean room & lobby & halls. Comfortable bed and bedding. Had our two standard poodles with us - easy to stay with them in this hotel.

I really enjoyed the breakfast here, the standard Hilton hotel breakfast. Coffee is a taste, potatoes are a taste, and apples are the same.

Many reviews noted the traffic noise, we had a room facing the parking lot and weren’t bothered by noise. If walking is an issue be sure to mention this when booking your room. The hotel is a large two-story “box” with a courtyard in the middle. There is the potential for lots of walking…especially to the front desk, pool, etc. Our room was clean and that’s most important. The rooms really need a nightlight as there are lots of twists and turns to navigate in the middle of the night. The wardrobe does not give when you walk into it! All the staff were pleasant and helpful. So why didn’t I give the hotel five stars? There is no coffee available except for the tiny pot in the room…and coffee drinkers know that’s not coffee! Every item in the “grab-n-go” breakfast has a charge! They say they have a Starbucks but, that’s a charge too…and the front desk person is your barista. What? With COVID and all, I have seen some pretty sad pre-packaged breakfast bars. But I never had to pay for them…and there was alway coffee. Sorry, but we aren’t staying here again.

I am a recent amputee. Upon losing my leg, I lost my home due to insurance regulations. I checked into the ESA -- Auburn Hills. Paul and his staff havebeen wonderful to me ever since my arrival. They have taken out trash and moved things that needed to be moved. They fulfill my every request. When I first got here, there was a lot of noise and dogs. But now, the carpets hav been cleaned and are freshened daily. EVERYTHING is sanitized regularly. If I were to have a complaint, it would be that the internet is HORRIBLE!!!! That is not the fault of the staff, but of ESA Corporate. I could write a letter, put it in an envelope and mail it and have it get to the recipient faster than the internet at this hotel. This place is entirely too expensive for crappy internet. Even if you pay the additional fee $31/month, it is very VERY slow if it comes on at all. I have spoken with corporate, who says it is a third party vendor and they are working on the issue. Again, I have been here since August. How long could it possibly take to figure out why I have no internet when the room next door has FULL signal. I like this hotel and I like the people that work here. I hate the internet and I think it is a shame for THAT to be the reason I am disatisfied with my greater than four month stay here......
