The Protea Hotel Mowbray is a hidden gem in Cape Town. We enjoyed every minute of our stay there.

The room is clean and tidy, and the environment is very good. The facilities are complete and the hygiene is in place. Cape Town is a very beautiful city. I will continue to stay in this hotel next time I come here on a business trip

So, let me start by saying this would have been a five star review but for a matter on the second stay. My wife and I booked three separate stays (safaris in between). Let me start with the best part-Mark their contracted tour operator. He took us all over the Cape Town region and to some hidden gems on our first four night stay. The staff was amazing. Friendly and attentive. Breakfast is great-something for everyone. Relaxing courtyard to chill. Rooms very clean. Comfy beds. They even give you some snacks in room at check in. So when we came for the second stay after our foray into Namibia, the air conditioner on the second floor (we did the two floor loft) did not work. I called the front desk and they sent housekeeping. I was told at first it was working (she stood in front of it-and a long story on the nature of the malfunction). Once she moved away from it she agreed that it was not working (bedroom area was 23C/73.4 F when it was set on 17 from check in through dinner). We were told not other lofts were available to switch to. I could have booked a loft for that night on the Marriott app. BUT, the next morning, they quickly sorted it and day staff apologized. That was the only negative. Everything else has been fantastic. When things go right, it is hard to describe. But all in all-excellent hotel and I would return if I make it to Cape Town again-which the tour operator makes one want to. So a little on that. My wife broke a nail. Mark modified everything and took us to a local mall so she could get her nail fixed. We asked if we could stop for snacks-he took us grocery store-so we had a much larger selection. Like I said, I struggled not giving a five star but I felt the a/c issue warranted a reduction-not the malfunction but how it was handled at first.

A few years ago, we just loved this little gem of a place, shall I say once upon a time! On arrival you keep on buzzing the gate and no response. Happened twice. Eventually you make use of your hooter to get the attention of reception. Please do not dare ask them why they don’t open the gate, you get told “you did not ring the bell”! At reception a lady came begging for a warmer blanket for her little one, the more she asked for one, the more the reception lady asked her did she not get a blanket? Quite embarrassing. The Wild Fig restaurant was very enjoyable. The Hotel room was beautiful. Sadly it had a terrible bad toilet spray/mouldy bathroom smell, so overwhelming and unbearable that one could not bare the smell for longer than a few seconds. It did not help much as the room was standing closed with no ventilation. One can only imagine how long it’s been like this. After a few minutes more, we decided to leave and cut this bad experience short, and find an alternative place to stay. On reporting our unsatisfactory experience to management the next day, it became even worse! After management had enough time to check on all the facts and call me back, the reception manager did not do so. Once again I had to telephone the reception manager, who in turn had this unacceptable tone of arrogance in her voice. After explaining to her how to check on all the facts, it was evident her lack of experience in this regard. I asked her for the Hotel manager at 4:20pm in the afternoon, I was told he had already left. After demanding to speak to the hotel manager, I eventually got a call from him this morning. Obviously he only heard his reception managers version, and already made up his mind how he was going to deal with this. I explained everything over again and asked him to please check all the facts properly before addressing the issue further. He said he would, but don’t hold your breath. My recommendation: Do not book here, as they do not live up to the standard this prestigious hotel once had!

The positives: All the staff (reception, breakfast room, cleaning, gardening, security) were extremely friendly. The breakfasts were great and the timings were good. The room was nicely decorated and a generous size with a convenient kitchenette. I didn't mind it being a bit off the beaten track. It felt secure. The historic building is just gorgeous and the common parts are beautifully and tastefully decorated to reflect its history. Downsides: it was noisy. It is right off 2 motorways and does have double glazing but ours was either defective, or insufficient. The blurb on *********** said it was air conditioned but ours was not, so we had to choose between a very stuffy, warm room or being bitten my mosquitoes all night (we tried out both experiences!). We also had overhanging branches from a tree that hit against the roof all night which was a bit annoying - and that was with earplugs! Also, I feel the bathrooms could do with updating. But everything was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. So, a bit of both really.

Hotel very centrally located in Observatory/Mowbray near the N2 and M5 highways. Staff very friendly and polite. Rooms very clean and well furnished. Grounds are very picturesque and well maintained. While the reception and breakfast are in the old farm buildings, the rooms are in a more modern section. We did not make use of the breakfast kitchen, so cannot make any comment thereon. Would be 5star but a false fire alarm went off in the middle of the night

This is my fourth visit to this beautiful hotel. Pam, David and Faraaz were most welcoming and efficient at the front desk. The rooms are spacious, clean and nicely appointed. The mattress was perfect...really good condition. Breakfast is full and served buffet style in the old Cape Dutch Manor House. There is a good array of cold and hot. Amanda at the egg and pancake station is warm and friendly. Funiwe, Ashley, Royston and Gail are all super attentive to your breakfast needs. You will need a car (free parking on site) or you need to uber as it is not near public transport...but is very well located near all the major onramps and so getting anywhere is quick and easy if you're driving. I love this place. It is my go to whenever I am in Cape Town

Setting and old Manor House added to a nostalgic morning Buffet Breakfast - food tables with cereals, pastries, muffins fresh and pouched fruit, Juices then cold meats cheeses and fresh tomato cucumber olives etc followed by hot buffet with different sausages, mince, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans and eggs to order (Only missed sautéed potatoes ) Bread for toast - ordinary super market cheap bread pulled a perfect breakfast to less perfect Staff: Reception staff very friendly but non of them or the group of another 3 people wore their masks or kept social distancing DINING ROOM : supervisor accommodating, helpful and really went the extra mile to ensure our requests were carried out. The waitress serving us was equally helpful and needs recommendation how she attended to Physically disabled lady without being asked PROBLEM - group of young POLO team members entered the dining room in WET SWIMMING GEAR, Disruptive behavior , did not wear masks, nor put on gloves to dish their plates, they touched food with their hand and the worst was they stormed into the small room where hot food was served, TOTAL DISREGARD OF RULE - keep social distance - and with a sudden 20 + people pushing us out the way and standing over us ....we left the room until they were done and went back for our food THE DINING ROOM SUPERVISOR DID NOTHING TO STOP THIS !!! He should have asked the Team leaders / elders to speak to them and if still not compliant apply the rule : RIGHT OF ADMISSION .... No managing of his Hotels rules

Clean rooms and nice communal areas. The downside for us was the restaurant (Wild Fig, which is lovely!) is closed several nights a week, which means you either need to drive or get a cab/uber to somewhere that serves food in the evening. I just wish the check in staff had told us when we checked in so we could have planned ahead. Otherwise, pretty lovely - I will be coming back soon.

A comfortable family/ business hotel. No lobby/lounge etc but relaxed vibe and lovely, effective staff. Note that there is a great restaurant on site but it is closed Sun night and all day Monday. Rooms are comfortable but certainly not hugely luxurious - which is refreshing. Very well located for Cape Town, airport and beyond.

BAD EXPERIENCE Immediately upon my arrival I suffered a theft in my room. Despite the promises of the receptionists, the hotel manager did not give me any support or feedback (note that the hotel is equipped with cameras). TOTAL INDIFFERENCE to a situation which in my opinion is VERY SERIOUS. Access to the courtyard which the rooms overlook is equipped with a gate with a lock that can only be opened with the room key. Having seen the theft I suffered, I couldn't help but notice that the hotel staff often deliberately blocks the gate, leaving it open and unattended for hours, making it completely useless. On Saturday evening I returned around 10pm. I had to wake up early the next morning. In the total indifference of the staff in the courtyard and in the garden (right outside my window), many customers were making confusion and shouting. I let it go but AFTER AN HOUR, I was forced to call the reception to ask for intervention. I would like to point out that given the size of the structure, the staff present could not have failed to notice the confusion. I DO NOT THINK it is at all acceptable for a hotel to tolerate these situations. On the fourth evening, not finding the magnetic key to access the room, I asked for a duplicate. At reception they told me that they had no cards and I would have to wait for someone to return one?? at 10.30pm?' Luckily I found mine under the seat of the car otherwise I don't know how long I would have waited. The hotel could be a nice quiet place, the breakfast plentiful and with lots of variety. Too bad the management is NOT LIVE UP TO THE CHAIN TO WHICH IT BELONGS. WILL NEVER BE HERE AGAIN - HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED. I travel a lot for work and beyond. I know what to expect and what I can tolerate during a hotel stay. In over 20 years of travel, this is the first negative review

Everything was very clean. Good and extensive breakfast buffet. Friendly staff. Location is a bit out of the way but very quiet. Good restaurant opposite. Very nice and well-kept outdoor area with a small pool.
