well situated close to transport links. Homelessness seems to be a big problem in Manchester as there were many homeless - mainly males - sleeping rough close by in shop doorways. This was felt to be threatening at times. Decor and furnishings inside hotel were good. Room provided on 7th floor was spacious, good view of city, adequate bathroom and comfy bed. Unfortunately we had a few problems during the stay. At approx 1900 hrs fire alarm went off. We wondered is this real or a test? Alarm went off after a minute just as we were about to vacate room and assemble somewhere. Did not see any instructions as to where assembly point might be. Decided it was a test. 30 secs later alarm goes off again. Look outside room. people making there way downstairs as lifts switched off. Alarm goes off just as we leave room. Back in room, sit down, alarm goes off, then on, then off, then on. Decided noise was too loud so go out anyway. Met people coming back up stairs as lifts not working. No one around at main entrance to advise on situation so explore Manchester. Returned 2245 and relaxed in bar area. Very pleasant sitting area and lovely bar staff. Drinks reasonably priced but no decaf coffee, no Baileys or equivalent. Had a beer instead but would have liked decaf coffee as a bedtime drink as there was no decaf coffee in room. Went for a clean up and shower but no hot water and shower fittings were badly fitted so water sprayed out along the pipe from taps to shower head flooding the bathroom floor with cold water. As it was almost midnight decided it was late to call room maintenance as we wanted to get some sleep so dried off the cold water and went to bed in nice comfy bed. 0700 made a cup of tea in room and went for shower hoping water would be hot. Another flooded bathroom and no hot water until it became warm at 0815. 0915 explored breakfast area. only a handful of guests eating, no one at the food counter so should be pretty easy. Unfortunately no staff on hand to explain where to sit or what to do. Fruit juice dispensers were empty, and no brown bread available at the time. Eventually a member of staff came out of kitchen and had to be beckoned in order to ask for juice and bread. A reasonable choice of cereals available, not much fruit - red berries tray was empty and had to catch staff member to have it replenished. Food available on hot counter was just acceptable as warm. My wife had problem with hot food as after placing bacon, sausages, beans and toast on plate, got to eggs - what few had been on display - had no been taken. Staff eventually suggested a wait time of 1 min. It was more than 5 so when they came the food on the plate was cold. Available staff is a problem here. When I asked to speak to the duty manager regards problems I was informed he was busy in the kitchen. 1015 returned to room , collected luggage and departed hoping to see manager on departure. Luckily caught a member of staff in bar ar
