Otaru Hotels with Breakfast

Excellent minimalist hotel that looks modern. It is conveniently located along the shopping street of Otaru and a stone’s throw to the famous Otaru canal, a short but scenic view of the town.

We stayed a night and chosen grid as a base as it's well situated in the middle of Otaru. - We checked in in the evening after a long day out. I was trying to get my family to offload the bags and check in first, hotel staff saw us and approached us at the parking lot, we thought it's impressive for staff to have noticed us and came forward to help and direct us but we were quick to jump to conclusion. Instead of assisting us, the staff ask us to put the bag back on the car so he could direct us to a parking lot which requires payment. It's okay that assumption failed, but when we are at the parking lot, the staff direct me to park in the initiate lot, but subsequently changed his mind and directed me to park at the lot beside despite the fact I have turned off the engine and gotten off the car, and there's easily another 20 lots around. That being said, I am fine with moving, the final straw for the poor rating came when they saw my wife struggling to wheel the big bags for the family across the snow to the hotel but offered no help. I think it's ungentlemanly and unspoken off of japanese service culture. - Rooms and onsen is impressive though, we stayed in the top level which only has three family rooms I guess and the view in the morning is good. Amenities are self serviced at level one across the check in counter. Top notch face mist and hairdryer in the room was a plus. Cleanliness was top notch as well. - location was central to Otaru Canal and JR Otaru station.

Although it is a old hotel, you can tell by the age of the building and facilities. My husband and I feel really comfortable during our stay. The staff was nice and helpful  The room is very clean, old but very clean, which need a lot of effort put in. (unlike some other hotel looks new cause they renovated but they don’t clean and you can see dust everywhere and you know they haven’t change the item if they are not used.)

Very nice hotel, the lobby is big and nice, allow us to check in at 2 pm. There are some reception staff that can speak mandarin as well. We booked a room for 3 people with 3 single beds. The room is bigger than expected and the washroom is more spacious as compared to others I have stayed in before. Pros is near the Otaru Canal, from the hotel just walk straight all the way will reach Otaru canal. Opposite the hotel there is a Lawson, convenient to buy stuff. Cons is slightly far away from JR station and you will need to walk about 10 mins.

Everything spot on. Onsen, evening ramen, free ice-cream and yokult were a nice touch. Very friendly atmosphere and professional staff providing help when needed. Automatic multistorey parking on site for the peace of mind will set you back for 1400 yen. Unless you wanna drive around to find something 200 yen cheaper. Room perfect and the memory pillows gave a good night sleep. Mind you that some could find it a tad hard though. Otherwise no complaints

We absolutely loved this ryokan experience! Stayed for 2d1n as a couple and absolutely loved the place! We booked the room with the private onsen and it was a lovely small space on the 2nd floor we could enjoy privately. The onsen is not too big, maybe 1.5 x 1.5 meters, but it was spacious for the two of us. We also found out that you can book a 45 minute slot for a separate private onsen for about ¥2200, which we may have done instead, had we known about it before booking. The japanese-style room was comfortable and had the usual amenities provided, alongside other nice additions like lotions and creams. The staff helped us to set up our futon (japanese-style bed) after dinner, and it was overall a very comfortable experience. The staff are super friendly and service was incredible. We got the dinner and breakfast package and the food was excellent. We had to choose both the dinner slot in advance, and it is first-come-first-serve. Dinner was served to us in the room over 1.5h and was a really amazing 12-course meal with instructions on the eating order. Breakfast was more standard, but still nice, we took it in the dining hall. The lounge is open till 10pm and we could take drinks and refreshment freely, including some small snacks and soft drinks. But they stop serving beer at 9pm. The onsens also have mini-fridges with free popsicles. There is also an outside area you can access from 3pm - 9pm that serves hot coffee and wine, with free marshmallows you can roast on the outside firepit. It was really nice. The garden is by far the nicest part of the hotel, it is really big and well decorated, with many nice places for photos and to enjoy a hot drink from the lounge. The space is quite large and might take about 20 minutes to fully explore. The only downside I can think of is that the location is quite hard to access. We chose to get to and from the ryokan by taxi, but there is also a shuttle bus service, from what I understand. When we arrived, the reception told us that there would be a shuttle bus leaving at 10:45 to Otaruchikko station. We still ended up requesting a taxi from the front desk though, which they were happy to help us book (I couldn't get any taxis by cab in the location). Overall a really amazing stay that we would absolutely recommend. The price tag might seem high for a ”3 star” hotel, but the ranking is deceptive, we absolutely had a 5 star experience. The view is unbeatable. The location is not in the Otaru city area, about 500 meters above the aquarium, which requires uphill walking. There are buses and shuttle buses that need to be reserved in front of Otaru JR Station (3:05 pm). Dinner is French fusion, breakfast is a semi-buffet set, and there is a private hot spring with sea view in the room. It is cost-effective.

Hotel is near the all touristy places like the canal. So most things were within walking distance. We completed most things in like 2-3 hours, so in fact there wasn't a real need to stay over a night in Otaru. By evening there wasn't anything much to do so we just stayed in the room as it was raining as well. After checking out, we drove to the next destination. Hotel staffs were incredibly helpful and courteous.

I had a pleasant one night stay at Hotel Sonia. The hotel's location was excellent, situated in front of the Otaru Canal and within walking distance to shopping and dining areas, as well as the train station (though snowy conditions made it a bit tricky). While the hotel lobby looked modern, the room interior felt outdated. Note that late check-out comes with a 2000 JPY per hour fee, so plan accordingly. Overall, it was a decent one-night stay.

The room was pretty good. I stayed here for two days. I went back to Otaru City one day, skied the other day, and took a hot spring bath at night. There is an izakaya called Xiliu nearby. The food is very good. I drank a little wine and took a hot spring bath every day before going to bed. It was very comfortable~ The ski resort is very good, not many people, the snow is very powdery, and all equipment can be bought/rented. Beginners can go there to play empty-handed.
