Okinawa's Sea.

This time, I visited a place in Japan that has a slightly different vibe compared to other locations. Unlike Osaka or Tokyo, Okinawa feels like a place full of youthful energy, where you can enjoy the sun and the beach. A must-visit spot in Okinawa is Shuri Castle. Although a fire in 2019 destroyed most of the buildings, I still went there to satisfy my curiosity and for the sense of ritual. The place was crowded with visitors, and many well-preserved structures could still be seen. As for the main castle, we could observe its restoration progress from outside the fence, witnessing the meticulous craftsmanship of Japan. For travelers interested in exploring Japanese history, it remains a worthwhile destination. Okinawa's beaches are among the best in Asia. The endless sea paired with vast grasslands makes it perfect for family outings and relaxation. During sunset, you can witness a perfect sunset as the sun slowly dips into the horizon, accompanied by various aircraft taking off and landing, making it a truly dreamy experience.

Highly cost-effective hotel!

Highly cost-effective hotel!

The hotel environment is very comfortable and Instagrammable. Toiletries are provided. The hot spring is not very big, but after a day of walking around, soaking in the hot spring at night feels very relaxing. There is a private parking lot 🅿️. Note that room cleaning service is only provided if you stay for 3 consecutive nights. It is about a 10-minute walk to Kokusai Street.

Sonohiya Take Ontake Sekimon

#okinawatrip It is Sonohiya Take Ontake Sekimon behind Shuri Castle. It's on the left side just after entering Shuri Castle, but it's a world heritage site that is so inconspicuous that if you don't know it, you'll pass by the Shurei Gate. But tourists from overseas are lining up here to take pictures, Even if you pass by, you may notice that you should not pass by on the way home. It is a compact but well-made gate, and you can enjoy it with a profound feeling even if you look at it from the back.

If you're visiting Okinawa for the first time, this is a no-brainer.

If you're visiting Okinawa for the first time, this is a no-brainer.

If you're not driving in Okinawa, I really recommend joining a day tour, so you can just focus on taking photos 😂. When I took the bus to the outlying islands later... ✏ To avoid getting up early, I chose the classic North Line tour that meets at 8:45. We didn't get back to the prefectural office until 19:00. ✨ Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium 2 hours 30 minutes The only paid attraction worth visiting. Follow Crayon Shin-chan to the aquarium. The highlights are the whale sharks and dolphin show, the rest can be skipped. Two and a half hours is enough for a rough visit. If you want to explore it thoroughly, I suggest spending a whole day there, as the round-trip bus ride is time-consuming. 🐋 ✨ Kouri Beach 20 minutes Check in at Kouri Bridge. The sea in Okinawa is really nice. It was cloudy and drizzling at the time, but the sea was still clear and transparent. 🌊 ✨ Onna no Eki Nakayukui Market 20 minutes There is a store on Kokusai Street. It's a good place to stop and rest, and recharge your energy. ✨ Cape Manzamo 20 minutes (JPY 100/person) Well, it was backlit in the afternoon, but I did see a rainbow that day. 🌈 ✨ American Village 50 minutes Oh my god, it's like an open-air set. It's a bit... depending on your personal preference. But it's really good for taking photos, especially at night when the lights are on. The area is not small, so 50 minutes is a bit rushed. 🏰 💁 I weighed my options and decided to join a day tour, as I didn't want to tire myself out. It was actually quite good, and the time at each attraction was very precise. 😅 It was a bit rushed, maybe because I spent too much time taking photos.

Okinawa|Freshly Sliced Tuna Sashimi, A Burst of Fresh Flavor!

The Tomari Fish Market in Okinawa is a haven for the freshest and most local seafood. As you step into the market, you're greeted by the aroma of the sea, with stalls displaying freshly caught fish, each piece exuding the sweetness of the ocean. It's a must-visit for food lovers. The market's biggest attraction, besides the wide variety of seafood, is the free cooking service! You can choose your freshly bought seafood and have it prepared by the stall owner or at a dedicated service counter. Whether you prefer it steamed, in soup, or pan-fried, you can enjoy freshly cooked seafood tailored to your taste. There's even a professional on-site to slice the fish, showcasing their skill and ensuring the freshness of the fish. I ended up choosing a box of assorted tuna sashimi. Each piece was vibrant in color, with evenly distributed fat, melting in your mouth with a burst of oceanic sweetness. Sitting in the outdoor seating area of the market, enjoying the sea breeze while savoring this simple yet rich delicacy, made me feel closer to the ocean. If you love tasting fresh seafood and enjoying the authentic atmosphere of a fishing port, the Tomari Fish Market is a stop you can't miss!

Recommended Accommodation in Okinawa City - Great Location + Large Public Bath.

🛌 Although the room is small, it is equipped with an L-shaped sofa where you can place your bags, making it just right for two people. There is also a small table that can be used for working on a laptop or having snacks. The double bed is small, but I prefer a firm mattress, which provides good support 👍 👍 Fully equipped: The 12th floor has washing machines and dryers, a microwave, and vending machines. There are luggage scales on both the first and 12th floors, which are very useful for travelers flying with budget airlines! The dining area next to the front desk on the first floor offers a free drink bar from 2pm to 10pm, where you can try local sodas 🥤 ♨️ The large public bath is clean and not very crowded. A password is required to enter the women's public bath, making it very safe. 🚗 Convenient location: A five-minute walk to the Prefectural Office Monorail Station, and a ten-minute walk to Kokusai Street. It's a five-minute walk to the meeting point for day tours at Ryubo Department Store. There is a Daikoku Drugstore and a Family Mart next to the hotel.

Shuri Castle Park

Shuri Castle Park

#2024wish Shurjo castle was the central governing structure of the Ryukyu kingdom for approximately 500 years. It was entirely destroyed during WWII, and restored in 1992. Its located in Okinawa’s capital, Naha, and is easily the most visited location in the prefecture. This particular structure is called the Seidan, and is considered the most important part of the castle. Note that the tops of the castle are ornamented with dragons. Dragons which represented the King, were a symbol of power. In 2024, I want to tavel back to Okinawa.

Relaxing Okinawa Trip

Okinawa is unforgettable with its beautiful scenery, rich culture, and delicious food. First, we visited the Naminoue Shrine. This shrine, located in Naha city, is nestled in a tranquil environment by the mountains and the water. Perched atop a cliff, it overlooks the azure sea, offering a magnificent view. The shrine's unique architectural style, with its red main hall set against green trees and blue sky, is strikingly vibrant. After paying our respects, we took a leisurely stroll along the coast, enjoying the gentle sea breeze. Next, we headed to Shuri Castle. Symbolic of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it bears witness to Okinawa's long history. Despite damage from a fire, the restored castle remains imposing and spectacular. Walking on the ancient walls, we not only felt the weight of history but also enjoyed the beautiful view of Naha city. The exhibitions inside the castle provided a detailed account of the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was very enlightening. After soaking in the culture, we went to American Village. With its exotic atmosphere, it felt as if we were in a small American town. There are a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities. We browsed through many interesting stores, picking up souvenirs, and the night view was particularly enchanting. Cuisine is an indispensable part of the Okinawa trip. We savored delicious steak at the famous 88 Steak restaurant. Known for its tender, juicy meat and unique sauce, the restaurant's lively atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home. Additionally, we visited the A&W burger joint. Unique to Okinawa, A&W's signature burgers and root beer are mouthwatering. We ordered the classic A&W burger with a refreshing root beer, simple yet incredibly tasty, making it an unforgettable meal of the trip. In summary, our trip to Okinawa allowed us to experience its rich history and culture, enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, and taste authentic cuisine. Every moment was filled with surprises and joy. Okinawa is truly a travel destination that makes you want to return again and again.

Shikina-en Garden,
thingstodo

Shikina-en Garden,

#thingstodo Shikina-en Garden, rebuilt after the Okinawa War, was originally built as former Ryukyu kings' 2nd residence and probably summer house in 18th century [1799 AD]. Even after it was rebuilt, it was designated as one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Unlike other traditional Japanese gardens of imperial families or dignities, which are often composed of pond, flower trees, bamboo trees, stone bridge, artificial hills and rivers, Shikina-en Garden has Chinese-style pavilion, pond in Chinese "heart" shape, fewer flower trees, but lots of tall trees, especially banyan trees, which can shield visitors or users from sunshine even though trees' roots develop and grow like spiderwebs. The entrance fee for the Garden is $ 400 Yen.
