Amed travel guide and discussion

Recently, I visited Amed in Bali and completely fell in love with this corner of the island! Unlike the bustling south, a peaceful atmosphere reigns here: fishing boats at sunrise, Mount Agung towering in the background, and incredibly fresh air. A special highlight of Amed is its black volcanic sand beaches—so unique and warm, they almost seem to shimmer at sunset. The sand, formed due to the nearby volcano, gives the landscape a truly otherworldly feel. Amed is a favorite for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, with coral reefs right off the shore and excellent underwater visibility. For water activities, I tried snorkeling at Jemeluk Reef—where I saw turtles and schools of vibrant fish—and later went on a dive safari to the USAT Liberty shipwreck in Tulamben, which is only a 30-minute drive away. I also took a kayak out to admire the bay from the water; the views were simply stunning. I should also mention the local guides—they know all the "secret" spots for the most beautiful coral. It’s also wonderful just to stroll along the waterfront in Amed, try fresh seafood at the coastal warungs, and catch the sunsets—they are particularly picturesque here, and the black sand adds a sense of drama. This area is perfect for those seeking a quiet getaway who want to be closer to nature rather than the party scene. However, keep in mind that Grab and Gojek services do not operate here. If you don't drive yourself, you will need to arrange transportation with the locals.

Bali has a gate that looks like it opens straight into the sky. 🇮🇩✨ 📍 Gate of Heaven: Lempuyang Temple If you’ve ever seen those dreamy Bali photos with two massive temple gates framing Mount Agung, there’s a good chance you’re looking at Lempuyang Temple, one of the island’s most recognisable cultural landmarks. The famous “Gate of Heaven” isn’t just about getting the perfect photo. Lempuyang is a Hindu temple complex with deep spiritual significance, and the journey there is part of the experience. Located in East Bali, the temple sits high in the mountains, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and cooler air compared with the coast. On a clear morning, the view toward Mount Agung can be incredible, especially when the clouds cooperate. And that’s the catch. 👀 That perfect mountain view isn’t guaranteed. Clouds can completely cover Mount Agung, weather can change quickly, and the atmosphere can look totally different from one morning to the next. So if you’re visiting mainly for the famous photo, keep your expectations flexible. 🌄 GO EARLY Lempuyang is one of those places where an early start can make a huge difference. Morning generally gives you better light and can feel more peaceful before the area becomes busier. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes and give yourself plenty of time because reaching the temple involves stairs and walking. 🛕 REMEMBER THIS IS A TEMPLE The Gate of Heaven might be famous on social media, but Lempuyang remains an important Hindu religious site. Dress respectfully, follow the temple’s rules, cover your shoulders and knees where required, and be mindful when ceremonies or prayers are taking place. The photo is a memory. The temple is the actual place. 📸 FOR THE PHOTO If you want that iconic composition, the symmetry of the gates is what makes the scene so recognisable. But don’t spend the entire visit chasing one shot. Look beyond the gate. Notice the traditional architecture, mountain landscape, temple details and atmosphere around you. Sometimes the photo you didn’t plan ends up being your favourite. And if Mount Agung appears between the gates? That’s just the Bali bonus. 😂🏔️ 🇮🇩 MAKE IT AN EAST BALI DAY Lempuyang works well as part of a wider East Bali itinerary. You can combine it with places such as Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung, scenic rice fields and coastal areas around Amed. That way, you’re not travelling all the way east for one photo and immediately turning around. Take your time. East Bali has a much slower atmosphere than some of the island’s busiest tourist areas, and that’s part of its charm. Would you wake up early for this view? 👀🏔️ 📍 Gate of Heaven, Lempuyang Temple, Bali 🇮🇩 📸 @malaysian_diaries #Bali #LempuyangTemple #GateOfHeaven #EastBali #BaliTravel #BaliIndonesia #IndonesiaTravel #BaliPhotography #TravelPhotography #BaliGuide #ExploreBali #TravelInspiration #VisitBali #TravelMoments #Wanderlust

The hidden gem of Bali where few tourists go Just imagine: volcanic sand, volcano views, crystal-clear water, the sound of the ocean right from your room, and hardly anyone around—doesn't that sound picture-perfect? This is all about the village of Amed, snorkeling, shipwreck diving, Indonesian massages, cafes with delicious food, and the beautiful Lahangan Sweet viewpoint. Spend a few days here, and you will definitely remember this place with warmth in your heart!

While Pura Lempuyang is plastered across every social media feed as Bali’s ultimate spiritual vista, the reality on the ground feels starkly overrated. The journey quickly turns into an expensive, highly commercialized logistical hurdle before you even glimpse the temple. Between the 70,000 IDR entrance fee, a mandatory 50,000 IDR return shuttle bus ride, and an extra 10,000 IDR motorbike taxi just to reach the final incline, the costs stack up long before you arrive. The financial sting, however, isn't the biggest letdown. Once you finally stand before the famous "Gates of Heaven," the illusion shatters. The striking water reflection seen online doesn't exist; it's just a clever optical illusion created by a local photographer holding a small piece of mirror under a smartphone camera. Worse still, capturing that single, manufactured shot requires enduring a soul-crushing three-hour queue in a crowded holding area. Beyond the gate itself, there is surprisingly little else for casual visitors to explore. For the steep price and hours wasted waiting in line for a fabricated photo, the experience feels less like a spiritual awakening and more like a massive tourist trap. #touristtrap #indonesiatrip #indonesia #bali

Bali is huge, and each district is like a separate world. I'll tell you about each one so you immediately understand where to go for what. · -- 🏄 Kuta — Party Time and First Waves A district with a large number of foreigners. There are tons of cafes, restaurants, shops, massage parlors, and hotels here for every taste. The waves are great for beginners—perfect for your first time surfing 🏄♀️🌊 · -- 🌿 Canggu — Russian district with a Balinese vibe There are a lot of guys living here permanently. The Balinese jokingly call this place the "Russian district." There are no shopping centers here, but there are plenty of niche coffee shops with that very Balinese atmosphere. The district is quiet, but heavy on traffic—allow extra time for travel. The waves are also for beginners. · -- 🍸 Seminyak — For partygoers A party district. If you want to let loose in the clubs and bars, stay here for a couple of days. Everything you need for nightlife is here. · -- 🧘 Ubud — the heart of Bali There's no sea here, but there are waterfalls, monkey parks, temples, and massage parlors at every turn. Here you can visit rice terraces and watch the sunrise on a volcano. A place to ground yourself, slow down, and enjoy life. · -- 🐬 Lovina — silence and dolphins People come here for a couple of days to hunt dolphins, turtles, and fluorescent plankton. There are no waves — that's what it's called, the Pacific Ocean :) Perfect for when you want to get away from the noise. · -- 🐠 Amed — a diver's paradise A great area for snorkeling and diving. There are beautiful corals, fish, turtles, underwater temples, and shipwrecks here—there's plenty to explore 🐠 And nearby in the mountains, you'll find parks and warmth like a postcard! · -- 🏨 Nusa Dua — luxury and tranquility Luxury hotels in a gated community. The water is calm, but there are strong low tides. The beaches offer all kinds of water activities. Keep in mind: all services here are more expensive than in other areas. · -- 🌅 Uluwatu — for professionals and beauty lovers The most beautiful beaches, cliff temples, luxury hotels, and waves for advanced riders. The views are simply out of this world. · -- 🚤 Islands near Bali: · Nusa Penida — wild and secluded. Here you'll find magnificent cliffs and the famous Klingking Beach. You can also swim with manta rays near the island—an experience you'll never forget! · The Gili Islands—their specialty is that they're tiny and car-free. Only bicycles and horse-drawn carts. You can walk around the entire island in about 40 minutes. There's excellent snorkeling nearby—monuments and incredible seascapes are hidden underwater. · -- Save this guide and let us know in the comments—which area is your favorite? 👇

Bali is massive, and every neighborhood has its own unique vibe and cuisine. I've put together a list of spots I want to keep going back to — from beachfront sunsets to the perfect poke bowls. 🌅 Lovina — The soulful North Coast It’s quiet, cozy, and breathtakingly beautiful here at sunset. · Mentari Lovina Bar & Kitchen — a restaurant right on the beach. It’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset with a drink in hand and enjoy a delicious meal. The atmosphere is an art form in itself. · The 10th Table — if you're in the mood for something a bit more upscale. The freshest seafood, beautiful presentation, and you can really taste the love that goes into every ingredient. · -- 🌊 Amed — Black sand and incredibly delicious food Amed really showed me its best culinary side. · Rimba Cafe — an absolute must for any meal. They have it all: smoothies, bowls, wraps. And everything is absolutely delicious 🤤 Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner — don't hesitate to drop by. · Mini Kopi Cafe & Kitchen. They make amazing poke and rolls here. Fresh, vibrant, and super filling. · -- 🏖️ Nusa Dua — Not really my vibe, but there is one exception Honestly? I wasn't the biggest fan of Nusa Dua. But there's one place that stuck with me forever. · Mai Mai Bar & Resto — they serve shrimp fried rice in a pineapple here. I've tried this dish so many times in different places, but this is the only spot that actually blew me away. The flavor combo is absolutely perfect! ⛰️ Our journey continued. We left Munduk, where fog and rain alternated with sunshine every day, and headed towards Amed. The journey took about three hours by taxi, comfortable and with air conditioning. ☀️ After the cool mountain weather, the weather changes abruptly as soon as we descend a bit – it becomes very sunny and hot. Our driver charged extra for every stop, so we simply gazed out the window at the mountain views and the dense traffic of Buleleng, marveling at how the local vehicles navigated the narrow streets. 🏠 Finally, we reached Amed and checked into the Bali Dream House. It's a wonderful, intimate hotel – only about eight rooms. What a contrast to Munduk's weather: it never rained on the coast the entire time! Our room had a private terrace and a magnificent sea view. Right by the terrace, vibrant flowers🌷 grew, attracting olive sunbirds – hummingbird-like birds. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner could be ordered right to the terrace. Reading a book 📖 in the heat of the day while listening to birdsong or dining to the sound of the waves was truly a treat. The hotel's main advantage is the fantastic snorkeling right off the shore; we once encountered a turtle 🐢. It was a delight! No need to go anywhere: just put on a mask, take a few steps, and you're among the corals and vibrant fish. The only important detail: the tides are very noticeable here. Snorkeling should only be planned during high tide. At low tide, the water recedes, and the corals are practically at the surface – it becomes impossible to enter the water without damaging the reef and injuring yourself. The toilet in our room is under a canopy, and the shower is right outside. I've loved this since my Zanzibar days! We also had a "pet" in our room – a bluish Toki spotted gecko. He acted like a cat (though he did send a little "hello" to our canopy once 😄), but he was also the perfect neighbor – he never made any noise. The hotel restaurant has a good selection of dishes, and the prices are better than in Munduk. The beach here is rocky, covered with small pebbles. For me, this place is perfect. ❤️ #BaliDreamHouse #Amed #BaliHotel #BaliTravel #SlowTravelAsia #IndonesiaTravel #SnorkelingBali

Bali isn’t just a single resort destination; it’s a diverse island with completely distinct neighborhoods. The vibe of your trip—whether you want a peaceful retreat, an action-packed adventure, a secluded hideaway, or a schedule full of activities—depends entirely on where you set up base. Choosing the wrong spot right off the bat often leads to wasted time and extra expenses. Let’s break down the best areas to stay and how to pick the one that will actually live up to your expectations. 🏝️ Nusa Dua — Comfort and Tranquility This area is perfect for those who want a stress-free, relaxing getaway. What to expect: · pristine beaches with gentle waves · premium hotels with top-notch service · well-maintained grounds and high security Who it’s for: · families · couples · travelers who value comfort and predictability Keep in mind: · prices are above average · less of an authentic local vibe Pro tip: Hotels here book up fast during peak season, so locking in your reservation early will save you money. 🌅 Uluwatu — Views and Vibes One of the island’s most picturesque regions, famous for its dramatic cliffs and ocean panoramas. What to expect: · sweeping panoramic views · epic sunsets · beaches with character Who it’s for: · couples · lovers of scenic spots · travelers chasing that specific Bali aesthetic Keep in mind: · swimming isn't always easy or safe everywhere · having your own transport is crucial Pro tip: Pick an accommodation close to the beaches you actually want to visit—it’ll cut down your transportation costs. 🏄♂️ Canggu — Style and Active Lifestyle A hotspot for surfers and anyone who loves a dynamic, energetic vacation. What to expect: · trendy cafes and restaurants · great surfing · a lively, bustling atmosphere Who it’s for: · young travelers · digital nomads · cafe hoppers and content creators Keep in mind: · heavy traffic · can be noisy in popular areas Pro tip: Staying just a bit outside the main drag is often cheaper and more comfortable, while still keeping you within a 10–15 minute drive of all the action. 🐠 Amed — Seclusion and Nature A less touristy destination perfect for a truly laid-back escape. What to expect: · peace and quiet · incredible marine life · a chilled-out atmosphere Who it’s for: · anyone looking to unplug from the hustle and bustle · snorkeling and diving enthusiasts Keep in mind: · far away from the island's main tourist attractions · limited nightlife and entertainment options Pro tip: Because it's so remote, it's best to book your accommodation and airport transfer together right away to avoid getting overcharged on the spot. 💸 How to Choose Accommodation Without Overpaying · don't just look at the price; consider the location · check the distance to your must-visit spots (beaches, cafes, attractions) · compare options in advance—the best deals vanish quickly · use Trip.com to search and book so you can see real-time prices and availability 📌 The Bottom Line There is no single "perfect" area in Bali—only the one that’s perfect for you. Picking the right location allows you to: · cut down on transport costs · save precious vacation time · get exactly the type of trip you’re looking for If you figure out your priorities early on and book your stay in advance, your Bali trip won't just be beautiful—it’ll be as comfortable and seamless as possible.

Bali isn’t just one "perfect beach"—it’s dozens of completely unique locations. A common mistake travelers make is flying blind, which leads to wasting money on extra transportation, tours, and changing accommodations. Let’s break down where you should stay. 🌊 Nusa Dua — Pristine and Peaceful This is one of the island's most well-maintained areas: pristine beaches, a calm ocean, and minimal street vendors. What you need to know: · Access to some beaches may be through hotels · Restaurant prices are above average · There's almost no spontaneous "street" vibe Choose accommodations with direct beach access—this will save you from additional expenses for entrance fees and transportation. 🌅 Uluwatu — Breathtaking Views and Untamed Shores You won’t find your typical long stretches of sand here—most spots are tucked away at the base of towering cliffs. What you need to know: · The paths down can be steep and lengthy · Not all beaches are safe for swimming · Infrastructure is limited Plan your daily route in advance—this will help you avoid unnecessary trips between remote beaches. 🏄♂️ Canggu — Energetic and Trendy A place where surfing, café culture, and a vibrant social scene come together. It’s perfect for those who want more than just "lying on the sand." What you need to know: · Traffic jams are a frequent reality · There are almost always waves—not ideal for a relaxed swim · Popular spots fill up quickly Schedule your visits to popular hotspots (early morning or late evening) so you don't waste time in lines and gridlock. 🐠 Amed — Quiet and Close to Nature Welcome to a completely different side of Bali: peaceful, slow-paced, and largely untouched by mass tourism. What you need to know: · The drive here takes several hours · Nightlife and entertainment options are sparse · Excellent conditions for exploring the underwater world Pack all your essentials in advance—the selection of goods and services here is limited, and prices can be marked up due to the remote location. The ultimate secret to Bali? There is no single universal beach that caters to everyone. But there is absolutely a right choice for your vacation style.

I started my route in Canggu and spent three days there. It's a pretty cool place: lots of cafes, restaurants, surfing, sunsets. But at first, I didn't understand why everyone was so crazy about Bali—it seemed like a nice, but ordinary place. Although the sunsets there are truly beautiful, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Then I went to Ubud for three days. That's where things got more interesting. There's lots of nature, greenery, rice terraces, all kinds of views. Fewer tourists, more of a local feel. Overall, it's a quiet place, more about walking and views. Then there was Kintamani—I spent two days there. It's noticeably cooler than down below. There are lots of cafes with views of the volcano, you can just sit and watch. The atmosphere is more relaxed, without the hustle and bustle. Then I went to Amed for two days, just right for the weekend. It had a completely different vibe—quiet, few people, very clear water. The ocean is calm, almost wave-free. A great place for diving and snorkeling, with lots of beautiful underwater spots. Nearby, I stopped at the Lahangan Sweet viewpoint. One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, I recommend it to everyone. On the way to Uluwatu, I stopped at Virgin Beach. It's a wilder beach, beautiful views, and fewer people. It's a quiet stopover before the next spot. And finally, Uluwatu. I spent three days there. The ocean is back here, but completely different—cliffs, strong waves, and views. The sunsets are absolutely beautiful. This place is more about surfing, views, and just hanging out and looking at the ocean. #Bali #Kintamani #Amed #Ubud #Uluwatu #Canggu #Diving

Amed is not a beach; it is a coastline. This string of seven traditional fishing villages unfurls along Bali's dramatic eastern shore like a necklace of black sand and quiet purpose. Defined by the brooding presence of Mount Agung and the deep, calm waters of the Lombok Strait, Amed trades the island's frenetic energy for a profound, linear serenity. A Rhythm of Salt and Net. Life here is dictated by the sea. At dawn, the shoreline comes alive with the vibrant colors of traditional jukung fishing boats preparing to sail. The day's rhythm is set by the repair of nets, the drying of catch, and the slow, patient work of salt farmers in the brilliant white ponds nearby. Tourism feels incidental, woven into—not overwriting—this enduring maritime fabric. A World Beneath the Surface. Amed's true magic lies offshore. The gently sloping black-sand beaches offer effortless entry into one of Bali's most accessible and rich snorkeling and diving realms. The iconic USAT Liberty shipwreck at neighboring Tulamben is a world-class dive site, while the vibrant coral gardens just meters from Amed's shore teem with life, making it a paradise for underwater exploration. Sunset Over the Volcanic Silence. Evenings are a quiet spectacle. As the sun sets behind the western mountains, the sky ignites, casting a fiery glow on Mount Agung's slopes and the silhouetted fishing boats bobbing on the glassy water. The atmosphere is one of hushed awe, often enjoyed with a fresh grilled fish dinner on the sand. Amed offers no grand parties, only the deep, resonant peace of a coastline that has mastered the art of stillness. #AmedBali #EastBali #FishingVillage #BlackSandBeach #MountAgung #SnorkelingBali #DivingBali #USATLiberty #JukungBoats #CoastalSerenity #LinearParadise #indonesiatrip

This view is seriously giving Tahiti vibes, but guess what? It's actually Bali! If you're looking for a spot that's waaay different from the crowded touristy areas, you gotta check out Amed in northeast Bali. Trust me, it's a whole mood. ✨ Amed is famous for its dramatic black sand beaches, which totally hit different compared to the white sands everywhere else. And for all my adventure seekers – this place is a WORLD CLASS diving haven! Some of the must-dive spots include the legendary Japanese shipwreck and the dreamy underwater temple. Both sites are super chill swims, only about 15 meters from the shore, so no crazy boat rides needed. ⛵🐠 Feeling over the Bali crowds? Amed is the move if you want peace, epic ocean views, and some next-level underwater action. It’s 10/10 worth adding to your itinerary. #bestsunset Watching the sunset at Sunset Point in Amed, Bali, is an unforgettable experience. The panoramic view of the sun setting behind Mount Agung, casting a golden glow over the Indian Ocean, is simply breathtaking. The infinity pool offers a perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty, while the viewing deck provides an excellent vantage point for capturing stunning photos. The ambiance is serene, making it an ideal place for both couples and solo travelers seeking tranquility. However, while the drinks are commendable, the food could use some improvement. The portions are small and the taste doesn’t quite match the high prices. Despite this, the overall experience is worth it for the view alone. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot, as it tends to get busy. The entrance fee, which is deducted from your final bill, is a fair trade for the spectacular scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

Can snorkel at lipah beach and see turtles right off the shore

#HotelAccommodationEvent Amed in Bali is a quiet and beautiful town located on the northeastern coast of Bali Island, Indonesia, and is especially famous for diving and snorkeling. I really recommend this place because amazing sunset and I have never seen like this atmosphere #beachlife #flowerlover #Uluwatu #amed

We rented a car and drove all the way to Lovina and then to Amed. Amed is a very relaxing place and better weather than ubud in raining season. we totally recommend it. Don’t expect amazing sandy beaches but most of the hotels have nice sea view #spooktaculartrip

We just came to Amed yesterday and we are very much pleased by the sunnier days and relaxing vibes. In Ubud it was much more rainy. Also here you have nice view of the sea. Of course, the sea so far is dirty, almost everywhere we have been. But the villa we chose is very good value for money.

Amed, located on the upper right side of Bali, Indonesia! There aren't many tourists yet, so it's quiet and full of the real local Balinese feel. I also went there after receiving recommendations from locals. It's not particularly famous compared to famous areas in Bali and nearby islands, but it was attractive in its own right. Near Mt. Agung, you can see Mt. Agung and the sea at a glance, and the black sand beach made of volcanic ash was attractive! The sunset and sunrise seen here were also romantic. How to get there Take a taxi from an island near Bali or take a boat from Gili Island.
