Rio Tinto: A River with Copper-Colored Water
#europeonbudget
It seems like a landscape from another planet: red water, golden rocks, and a sky reflected in rusty hues. But none of this is fantasy—it's Rio Tinto, a river and mining region in Andalusia, southwestern Spain.
The water's color is easily explained: it contains a lot of iron and copper, leached from the ground over thousands of years of mining. The water is acidic, almost like lemon juice, but it harbors bacteria that can survive without oxygen. NASA scientists come here to study what life might be like on Mars.
📍 Location: Minas de Riotinto, Huelva Province, Andalusia.
🕐 When to go: Spring or fall, when the heat subsides and the landscapes are especially striking.

How to visit Rio Tinto on a budget
🚗 How to get there:
— From Seville – 1.5 hours by car (via the A-66 and N-435).
— You can also get there by bus or tour departing from Seville, Huelva, or Nerva.
— Address of the main complex: Parque Minero de Riotinto, Plaza Ernest Lluch, s/n, 21660 Minas de Riotinto.
🎟️ What to see:
— Museo Minero de Riotinto – a mining museum where you can descend into an old mine.
— Tourist Mining Train – a train ride along the old railway along the red river (approximately 22 km, ticket €12–15).
— Corta Atalaya – a gigantic open pit mine, once the largest in Europe.
— Casa 21, Bella Vista – the home of 19th-century British engineers.
📸 Tip: Don't touch the water—it's harsh on skin and clothing. It's best to watch from bridges and banks.

Is this a church or a fortress?
Andalucia Tour ~ Huelva (Region)
This Templar church is located at the entrance of Aracena, on top of a hill. Its Gothic style dates back to the 13th century. It stands on a hill next to the Aracena Castle. It is the oldest parish in the area and can be classified as a church-fortress. The Las Maravillas Grotto is located at the foot of the limestone hill where the building is located.

Small town on the Odile River
Andalucia Tour ~ Huelva (Region)
It is an important tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches.
The town is surrounded by pine forests and owes its origins to a tower that sat atop the Punta Umbria hill. The tower was built in the 14th century to warn the populace of potential invasions. During the summer it is possible to connect Punta Umbría and Huelva by so-called "canoes". In this town we find the Odile Swamp Natural Reserve and Los Embarras Natural Park, two natural paradises of great environmental value.

The oldest city in Western Europe, founded by the Phoenicians 3,000 years ago.
Different peoples who settled here have left significant cultural imprints, which still influence the character of the city's inhabitants. This peninsula, located on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, retains an important historical heritage—a result of its commercial significance—as well as beautiful beaches and exquisite local cuisine. The Costa de la Luz, divided between the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz, also offers many destinations that blend culture and leisure. For nature lovers, there's nothing better than visiting Doñana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A small church that combines Mudéjar and Gothic art
Andalucia Tour ~ Niebla
The incredible Catholic Church has gone through many styles. It is said to have been a Roman temple, which was later converted into a Visigothic temple by the bishopric, rebuilt again in Mudejar in the 9th century, and built in Mudejar Gothic style in the 15th century. It is perhaps the only one of its kind in Spain and it is incredibly well preserved. Some impressive leaf-shaped arches. It features a patio where you can relax. Wheelchair accessible entrance. There is no admission fee to make your visit worthwhile.
