Salt-laden sea winds blow straight into its timber frame. Along this coastline, military fortifications are military fortifications, lighthouses are lighthouses, and Mazu temples serve their own traditions. But this pavilion is something altogether different. It has lived several lives within the same wooden frame. Built in the Ming dynasty during the Chenghua era, it originally served as the drum tower of the Yong'an garrison. Standing at the centre of the village crossroads, it was used to sound orders, observe the coast, and warn against maritime attacks. Then the garrison system disappeared. The military settlement gradually became a fishing village. And the building changed with it. The upper level was transformed into a shrine dedicated to Guanyin, while the lower level remained completely open, without enclosing walls. Locals came to call it the “Four-Row Pavilion.” The remarkable thing is that the structure itself survived while its purpose completely changed. Military architecture became community architecture. A building once used to watch for enemies became a place where villagers gathered and worshipped. The same columns. The same beams. A completely different life. That kind of architectural continuity is exceptionally rare among China's surviving coastal heritage sites. #summerbeachnights I really enjoyed Beihai (北海) in summer because there isn’t just one beach to go to. I could easily fill a day moving between different parts of the coast, depending on what I felt like doing. For a proper beach day, I’d go to Silver Beach (银滩). It’s the one I’d pick if I wanted to spend more time on the sand, walk along the beach and enjoy the sea. I prefer going later in the afternoon when the heat is less intense, rather than being there under the midday sun. For sunset, dinner and drinks, I really liked Qiaogang Beach (侨港海滩). It’s easy to combine with Qiaogang Style Street (侨港风情街), so I could have dinner, wander around, then head back towards the beach as the sun was going down. There are also quite a few bars, which makes it a nice place to stay into the evening. Then there’s Guantouling (冠头岭), which has a completely different feel. I wouldn’t choose it for a typical beach day. I’d go there for the coastline, rocks, views and sunset. It’s much more about enjoying the scenery. And when I just wanted a casual evening stroll, I’d head towards Beihai Old Street (北海老街) and the waterfront. Grab something to eat, walk around the old arcade buildings and slowly make my way towards the coast. So if I were planning a summer day in Beihai: Afternoon: Silver Beach for some beach time Sunset: Qiaogang Beach or Guantouling Dinner: Qiaogang, especially if seafood is on the agenda Night: Qiaogang for drinks and a beach stroll, or Old Street for a more local evening What I liked most was that I didn’t have to treat the beach as a single destination. Some places were better for swimming and walking, some for sunset, and some for dinner and drinks. And honestly, in Beihai’s summer heat, that’s the way I prefer it — beach in the late afternoon, sunset, good food and then a slow evening by the sea.
