Before visiting, I imagined it would mainly be about mountains and wildlife, but once I arrived, I discovered a much more diverse landscape—rugged coastlines, crystal-clear beaches, dramatic mountains, peaceful lakes and charming little towns. What I loved most was how untouched many parts of Tasmania felt. I started my journey in Hobart, where I enjoyed the relaxed waterfront atmosphere and explored the city's historic streets. Compared with Melbourne and Sydney, Hobart felt much quieter, which was exactly what I wanted after spending time in bigger cities. From Hobart, I headed out to explore Tasmania's incredible natural scenery. 🌊 Freycinet National Park One of my favorite places was Freycinet National Park. The first time I saw Wineglass Bay from the lookout, I honestly couldn't believe the colors. The curved white beach, turquoise water and surrounding mountains created one of the most beautiful coastal views I've experienced in Australia. The hike to the lookout wasn't particularly long, but I definitely recommend wearing proper shoes and taking your time. I stayed at the viewpoint longer than expected because the scenery kept changing as the sunlight moved across the bay. 🏔️ Cradle Mountain Another highlight was Cradle Mountain. The landscape here felt completely different from the coastline. There were alpine trails, ancient forests, rocky peaks and peaceful lakes. Even though the weather changed quickly, that actually made the scenery feel even more dramatic. I remember standing beside Dove Lake with Cradle Mountain in the background. The water was incredibly calm, and for a few minutes there was almost complete silence. That was one of those travel moments that photographs simply can't fully capture. 🐧 Wildlife & Wild Coastlines Tasmania also surprised me with its wildlife. Depending on where you travel, you may encounter wallabies, wombats, echidnas and even little penguins. Seeing wildlife in a natural environment rather than behind glass was one of the experiences I appreciated most. The coastline was another highlight. Places like Bay of Fires offered completely different scenery again, with white sand, clear blue water and striking orange-red rocks along the coast. 📍 My Tasmania Travel Tips 🚗 Rent a car if possible. Tasmania is much easier to explore independently, especially if you want to visit national parks and remote coastal areas. 🥾 Bring proper hiking shoes. Even shorter trails can become muddy or slippery depending on the weather. 🌦️ Always check the weather before hiking. Conditions can change quickly, especially around Cradle Mountain. 🧥 Pack layers. Even during warmer months, mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cold. 📸 Allow extra time for photography. Tasmania is full of unexpected viewpoints, and rushing between attractions would be a shame. 🦘 Drive carefully at dawn and dusk. Wildlife can be active around roads, particularly outside the main towns. 🗺️ Don't try to see everything in a short trip. Tasmania looks manageable on a map, but driving between different regions takes time. ❤️ My Experience What stayed with me most about Tasmania wasn't one particular attraction. It was the feeling of space. There were moments when I was driving through empty roads with mountains in the distance, stopping beside a lake with nobody around, or standing on a beach listening to nothing but the waves. Tasmania felt slower, quieter and more raw than many other places I'd visited in Australia. If you're looking for a destination where you can combine road trips, hiking, wildlife, mountains, beaches and incredible scenery, Tasmania is somewhere I'd definitely recommend. A lesson in Australia’s history would not be complete without the history of Port Arthur. It began in the 1880s as a penal colony. Then lieutenant governor of Van Diemen’s Land, George Arthur, established Port Arthur as a settlement for the most incorrigible, repeated offenders from Great Britain and Ireland.[i] The juvenile offenders, on the other hand, would end up in Point Puer, also within the settlement. The idea was that hard labor, psychological punishment, trading and religious education combined would reform even the worst of all convicts. Port Arthur situates on the southwestern coast of Van Diemen’s Land. The penal colony inherited natural barriers that prevented the convicts from any kind of escape. The convicts then understood that the waters surrounding the three sides of the penitentiary was infested with sharks. Visitors to the Port Arthur historic site would not miss the theme of the site’s history. We went through a very thoughtful exhibition of the life of the convicts there. The research was thorough, and focused on the life stories of the convicts. The name of the place is perhaps a slight overstatement when it comes to the cave itself. Still, it's worth the 10 minute drive here if you're already visiting Port Arthur for the coastal views around the site, and there are some great walks in the area if you have an hour or two to spare.

Could have easily spent a second day at the Port Arthur Historic Site. There's so much to see and learn. The whole place is beautiful, open, and absolutely sprawling (which is not something I ever expected to say about a prison!).

Tasmania is filled with many natural landscape but do you know it is also filled with many stories and historic sites from ages ago? One is the Port Aurther Historic Site located at in the south east of horbart, where it is approx a 90mins drive around the coast to reach. This is a place that you have to visit as it was deemed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are historic buildings dating back to the 18th/19th centuries along the cliffsode overlooking the coast. This place has many tales where it wad once a place for convicts in a 4 story Penitentiary. A huge Penitentiary which consists of an asylum, hospital and a church. There are also tales of ghost story here which can be quite scary to some. Located 1.5 hours drive from Hobart is the Port Arthur Historic site. Initially created as a timber gathering site in the 1830’s, Port Arthur quickly became of major importance to emerging colonies in Australia due to its highly productive ship yards. The site is large & nestled in a valley, with paths guiding your way around the site. On arrival each visitor is giving a playing card, this corresponds to a past occupant of Port Arthur & you will learn about then down stairs in the museums. Once you have visited the museum you then head onto a 40 minute introductory tour, which shows you around the sight and gives you a deeper insight into the history of the people and the building that formed Port Arthur. After that you proceed to the dock for your bay tour which is also included in the entry fee. This tour which goes out around one of the most important islands of the settlement is again guided. After that you are free to roam the grounds and explore the rest of the site. There are a wide range of extra tours on offer including the “After Dark pack” which includes a 2 course meal at their on-site restaurant and a 90 minute ghost tour. The food was incredible and we had an extremely knowledgeable guide who made the experience very enjoyable.
