Yongchu Valley, a must-visit when traveling to Cheongsong
Daejeonsa Temple in Juwangsan Mountain, Cheongsong was founded by the Buddhist monk Uisang in the 12th year of King Munmu’s reign (672) of Silla. The name of Daejeonsa Temple was derived from the name of Daejeondogun, the son of King Ju in the legend of King Ju. Daejeonsa Temple was originally a very large temple, but much of it was destroyed by fire several times. Currently, it consists of Gwaneumjeon Hall, Myeongbujeon Hall, Eungjinjeon Hall, Sanryeonggak Hall, and Yosaechae centered around Bogwangjeon Hall, and Baekryeonam and Juwangam Hermitages affiliated with Daejeonsa Temple. Daejeonsa Temple’s Bogwangjeon Hall is Treasure No. 1570 and was rebuilt in the 13th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign (1672) of the Joseon Dynasty after being destroyed by fire during the Imjin War. The building structure of Daejeonsa Temple’s Bogwangjeon Hall is a building with three bays in the front and three bays on the side, consisting of a granite foundation on a granite pedestal and slightly curved columns. The roof is a gable roof with a double eaves with a ridge only on the front, and the structure is a two-column, five-bay structure, and in the multi-bracket style, it has two outer protrusions and three ridges, and two inner protrusions and three ridges. The front is in the shape of a ridge and the back is in the shape of a bridgehead, showing the characteristics of wooden architecture style after the mid-Joseon period. The Bogwangjeon of Daejeonsa Temple in Cheongsong is a wooden building in the multi-bracket style of the mid-Joseon period with a clear construction date, and it shows the characteristics of the mid-Joseon period well in terms of the bracket style, etc. In particular, the interior Dancheong and murals are outstanding works with outstanding pictorial quality, and as an important resource of Buddhist art from the mid-Joseon period, the original form at the time of construction is relatively well preserved, and as a nationally designated cultural property (treasure), it has sufficient historical, artistic, and academic value.
