I trained Chur→Ilanz (1 hr, CHF 22), PostBus to Vals, then to the Leis alp stop, and walked the 2 km meadow track to the lake at 07:00. The cliff is the east wall of the Valser valley—200 m of schist dropping to the meadow where Nardus and Festuca mix with Polytrichum moss in the cow-grazed hollows (this is active alp pasture, cows Jun–Sept). The lake is cobalt, the meadow smells of hay and thyme, and the moss line runs up the seep gully like a green vein. I ate breakfast on the west shore, watched a herd cross the far bench at 08:00. No hut, no fee, no permit. Mistake: I came in July and the meadow was fly-blown near the cows—sit on the rock shore, not the grass. Another: I wore sneakers and the meadow was dew-soaked to the ankle; trail shoes. At midnight on 29 May, I checked MeteoSwiss before going to sleep. We were supposed to visit Jungfraujoch after moving to Grindelwald, but the forecast for the next day looked much better. So we decided to change our plan and go directly from Lucerne instead. Luckily, we already had the Swiss Travel Pass First Class. We just changed our train route and bought the discounted ticket needed for Jungfraujoch. The next morning, the weather was beautiful. That experience ended up being one of the reasons I liked having the pass. In Switzerland, especially when visiting the mountains, our itinerary sometimes depended on the weather. Why First Class? We travelled for 12 days with our three-year-old son and an elderly parent, with quite a lot of moving between cities. First Class was mainly for comfort. It was generally quieter and easier for us to sit together, which helped when we had luggage and a young child with us. For normal train journeys, we simply boarded and showed the QR code when tickets were checked. We didn’t have to buy individual tickets every time we moved to another city. We used the pass for: · Zurich → Lucerne · Lake Lucerne cruise · Mount Rigi · Lucerne → Grindelwald · Grindelwald → Zermatt · Glacier Express route · Chur → Zurich We also used the pass for discounts on some mountain journeys, including Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat and Grindelwald First. For Glacier Express, we still had to book the seat reservation separately. One thing to take note First Class can sometimes be at the far end of the train. We learnt this during the trip because when the connection time was short, walking all the way to the First Class carriage with luggage wasn’t very convenient. After that, we tried to check the carriage position on the platform before boarding. Would I buy it again? For the same type of trip, yes. Not because First Class is necessary in Switzerland, but because our trip involved many train journeys, a young child, an elderly parent and luggage. If I were staying in only one or two places, I would calculate the cost first before buying it. Chur is a small town in Switzerland. It's cute and interesting and has several museums. It also has a large outdoor swimming pool with views of the Alps.

We took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur during our Switzerland trip. We didn’t take the full route to St. Moritz because Chur fitted our itinerary better, and honestly, five hours already felt like enough time for us to enjoy the Glacier Express experience without spending the whole day on the train. We were travelling with a three-year-old child and an elderly parent, so we arrived early at Zermatt station to find our carriage, store our luggage and settle down before departure. Since the seats were reserved in advance, boarding itself was quite straightforward. Inside, the carriage was comfortable with large panoramic windows. This made sightseeing easy, although reflections on the glass sometimes appeared when we tried to take photos. The scenery changed slowly throughout the journey. We passed mountains, rivers, forests, green fields, villages and traditional houses. Not every section was dramatic, but there was usually something to look at outside. Our son enjoyed spotting cows, tunnels and rivers along the way, while for our elderly parent, this became a much more relaxing day compared with sightseeing that required a lot of walking. We travelled for around five hours. It sounds long, but for us it didn’t feel too tiring. We spent the time looking outside, taking photos, eating snacks and resting. Food and drinks were available onboard, but we also brought our own snacks. Travelling with a young child, this was useful because we could eat whenever we wanted. What I liked most was that we didn’t need to keep changing trains. Instead of treating Zermatt to Chur as just another transfer, the journey itself became part of our Switzerland trip. Would I take the Glacier Express if I only wanted the fastest way to Chur? Probably not. The journey is slower than regular train connections and seat reservations are required. But if you want a slower travel day, especially when travelling with a child or elderly family member, I think it can be a very comfortable way to enjoy the scenery while still moving to your next destination. For us, Zermatt to Chur was enough. But it doesn’t feel ancient or worn out; instead, it perfectly blends old and new✨ 🏛️The old town still preserves the Roman-era layout, with winding cobblestone streets. The Gothic St. Luzius Cathedral soars into the sky, and the bishop’s palace silently tells 800 years of stories. Around every corner are galleries, museums, and small chapels—each step feels like walking through a history book. 🚗The coolest part—Chur banned cars decades ago! Visitors explore the city on foot only, with no traffic noise, just the crisp sound of shoes tapping on stone. From Chur, you can easily reach over 20 nearby resorts, making travel super convenient. Chasa Persénta is the village’s painted house museum (CHF 7 entry, 2026, card ok, closed Mondays). Then I followed the signed 40-minute walk northeast to Lai Nair, a small dark mountain tarn ringed by larch and dwarf pine—free, no facilities, perfect wind-still mirror at 7 am. Mistake: I visited in May and the lane was muddy, Lai Nair still half-frozen; late June–Sept is the window. Another mistake: assuming Guarda has ATMs—none; carry cash for the village café (CHF 4.50 tea). Worth it? Yes for Engadin purists; Guarda is quieter and more intact than Sils or Silvaplana, and Lai Nair is a free jewel. The CHF 7 house is optional. Question: would you detour 40 minutes by train to a free nut-tree village and a free tarn, or stick to St Moritz’s paid lake cruises?
