If I had to stay and live in Venezuela, I would choose Mérida 💖 A city of orange tiled roofs against the endless greenery of the mountains, a city of murals on the walls of historic houses, a city of European architecture with a wonderful climate, a city where you can feel both summer and winter depending on your mood... Honestly, I would probably struggle to choose between Mérida and Caracas, as both cities are amazing. But today, let's talk about Mérida. Mérida is one of the most tourist-friendly places in Venezuela. It is famous for its mountain landscapes, street art, mild climate, top universities in the country, and the longest cable car in the world. And of course, the hospitality of Venezuelans made it easy to find a host who welcomed us warmly. As for Mérida, it is truly beautiful. In the center, you'll find colonial architecture, stunning buildings and cathedrals, cobblestone streets, and flowers, all surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. We visited an old library where we were given a detailed tour (lasting about an hour and a half 🤭), and then we were taken to the rooftop—a viewing platform with a view of the tiled roofs, mountains, and clouds. The weather was perfect, and so was the mood 😄 Overall, we had a fantastic time! These are the emotions Mérida left me with. Honestly, it was a bit sad to leave, because leaving Mérida meant heading towards the border with Colombia, signaling the end of the Venezuelan chapter of our journey.

Unlike neighboring countries born from brutal grassroots revolution led by rebel generals like Simón Bolívar, Brazil’s independence was a top-down, legitimate royal transition. Dom Pedro I was already Portugal’s crown prince, bringing natural political legitimacy, while surrounding nations rose through armed rebellion. Brazil formed a stable constitutional monarchy, preserving its full unified Portuguese colonial borders and remaining one single giant nation. #sunsetplaces Hato Piñero is a 105,000-hectare working ranch and private reserve in Guárico state, accessed from Caracas via domestic flight to Valencia or Calabozo (~60–90 min, $80–140 USD, card), then a 2h 4×4 transfer (arranged by the hato, cash USD or BsD). Day visits aren't a thing — you stay 2–4 nights, full board, ~$180–260/night pp depending on season, tip separate. I went in February (peak dry, sunsets 6:30). The evening outing left the lodge at 5:00 — a covered 4×4, max 8 guests. The capybara lagoon is 12 min from the lodge: a 3-hectare oxbow with 30+ capybaras, a spectacled caiman dozing on the far bank, and a single wood stork. At 5:50 the water went from khaki to a thin band of hammered gold, the capybaras climbed the bank in silhouette, and the dead moriche palms cut black filigree into the sky. I took a maxi to Maracas Junction (10 TTD), taxi to the Mamit gate (60 TTD share), started 6 a.m. in January. The first 2 hr is secondary forest, then the moss takes over: Sphagnum thigh-deep in the saddle, Racomitrium on the dwarf palm, Hymenophyllum on every twig at 700 m where the cloud sits all morning. El Tucuche has two peaks (North/West), the mossy ridge between them is the 30-min half with a view to Venezuela on clear days — we got 4 min of clearance at 9:20, then cloud again. Temperature 14°C at the top, 26°c at the gate. Mistake: I went in September — ridge in cloud 100% of the day, no view, leeches on ankles, slipped on dwarf-palm root. Dec–Mar. Second: I carried 1 L water — needed 2.5 L, the cloud doesn't hydrate you. Third: I played dancehall on a speaker — guide: "Tucuche is a spiritual place for some, and the birds shut up, off." Buy in Santa Cruz: a 25 TTD doubles, not the 80 TTD Port of Spain. Gear: 70 USD 3-layer, gaiters, 15 TTD leech socks. Local rule: state land, no fee, guide advised, no drone (wildlife reserve adjacency), no cutting fern, the dwarf-palm ridge is fragile — step on rock. The moss in the saddle is 400-yr cloud catch — step on cut path. Opinion: El Tucuche is the quietest big-mountain walk in the southern Caribbean and the mossy saddle is better than the summit. Should Forestry mark the ridge with cut stakes and run a 20 TTD ranger dawn walk, or keep it club-guide only? I'd stake it. Would you sweat 6 hrs in cloud for a mossy saddle and 4 min of Venezuela?

Lisbon boasts many fine statues, and while walking down Avenida Da Liberdade, I came across several impressive ones. Among these, the statue honoring Simón Bolívar particularly stood out. Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), born in Venezuela, was a military leader and statesman who played a key role in South America's fight for independence from Spanish colonial rule. Created by sculptor Arturo R Aguilero, this statue portrays Bolívar in military uniform, holding a scroll in his right hand and gazing ahead. It's a beautifully crafted statue and definitely worth seeing if you're in the area, as it's easy to find along Avenida Da Liberdade.

I flew into Georgetown and then took a small plane to the interior airstrip near Kopinang (expensive, around USD 250, but the only feasible way to reach the trailhead quickly). From Kopinang village, we hired a local guide and porters (essential; negotiate rates in cash—Guyanese Dollars or USD). The trek starts with a brutal river crossing. The water was chest-deep, and the current was terrifying. Our guide used a rope to pull us across. The trail then enters pristine rainforest, humid and alive with howler monkeys. We hiked for six days to reach the base of the Roraima Plateau. The final ascent is a steep climb up the cliff face using natural steps and roots. During my trip to Venezuela, I visited Colonia Tovar, one of the most unusual places in the country. After the bustle and heat of Caracas, it's especially surprising to find yourself among cool, green mountains, wooden-façade houses, red roofs, and German-style signs. At first glance, it seems as if you've been transported to a small European town. But tropical plants grow nearby, Spanish is spoken, and German traditions blend with Venezuelan culture. It's this contrast that makes Colonia Tovar so fascinating: here, Germany and Latin America exist literally on the same street. The settlement was founded in 1843 by immigrants from the Kaiserstuhl region in southwestern Germany. For over a hundred years, Colonia Tovar remained relatively isolated from the rest of Venezuela, allowing residents to preserve the architecture, cuisine, and many traditions of their ancestors. The most unusual fact has to do with the language. A distinct dialect, "Aleman Coloniero," has developed here. It originated from the old Alemannic dialect of the German settlers, but over time absorbed Spanish words. The result is a unique language that can be difficult to understand even for someone familiar with modern literary German. Another interesting detail is the Church of San Martino in the center of Colonia Tovar. Its architecture is reminiscent of the church in the German town of Endingen, where many of the first settlers came from. It's as if part of their homeland was transported across the Atlantic to the Venezuelan mountains. Travel advice: it's best to visit here in the morning, and preferably on a weekday, when the streets are quieter. It's worth bringing a light jacket or sweater—it's noticeably cooler in the mountains than in Caracas. And there's no need to rush: the most interesting thing is to simply stroll around, admire the unusual houses, sample the local German-Venezuelan cuisine, and observe how two completely different cultures merge in one place. For me, Colonia Tovar was one of the most unexpected discoveries in Venezuela. Macaws on a residential terrace—the most unexpected encounter in Caracas. One of the most vivid memories of my trip to Caracas in 2024 isn't associated with a famous landmark, but with a residential terrace. Free-flying macaws would flock here—huge, colorful, and completely unlike your average city bird. Up close, they turned out to be much larger than I imagined. Some macaw species, including their long tails, reach almost a meter, so when one perches within arm's reach, it makes a serious impression. Especially considering their powerful beak: large macaws are capable of cracking very hard nuts, and some even coconuts. And here this enormous bird, with such an impressive "tool," sat calmly next to me, carefully taking bananas and sunflower seeds straight from my palm. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but the macaws were surprisingly cautious. Perhaps it was this contrast that stuck in my mind most: it looked almost like a tropical dinosaur, yet it took its food very delicately. The size wasn't the only surprise. Some macaws made such loud and unusual sounds that it seemed as if a dragon or pterodactyl had landed on the terrace, not a parrot. It's especially funny when a bird sits quietly nearby, and a second later lets out a scream that startles everyone around. An unusual fact: free-flying macaws have long been one of the living symbols of Caracas. They can be seen above the streets, on rooftops, and on the balconies of residential buildings. For a huge capital, it's a striking contrast—amidst the high-rise buildings and city noise, a vibrant tropical flock constantly appears. Travel advice: only feed the macaws if permitted by hotel staff, and only with food suitable for the birds. Don't try to catch or pet them—it's much more interesting to wait quietly for the bird to approach. For me, this encounter was one of the most unusual aspects of Caracas.
