Pilgrimage Along Spain's Atlantic Coast ~ The Basque Region
Spain's Atlantic Coast Pilgrimage - Basque Country
A great way to learn more about Basque history and culture! Exhibits spread across four floors include everything from centuries-old stone city emblems and miniature smith workshops to exquisite porcelain and historical costumes. For those who appreciate miniatures, this museum has much to offer. In addition to models of traditional villages and important buildings, you can also stroll through an impressive model of the island of Biscay.
The Mallona Causeway, built in 1745, is located on a small plateau in front of Mount Artagan.
They depart from Plaza Miguel de Unamuno, the gateway to Begoña and the beginning of the Zamudio Road. They first reach the Old Mallona Cemetery, the town's first cemetery, established when the French banned burials in churches in 1808. The cemetery was inaugurated in 1830. In response to this ban, the city council purchased the small village of Malona (hence its name) and all its property to create the aforementioned cemetery. Only the main entrance remains, consisting of a Neoclassical arch designed by Juan de Belaunzaran, flanked by Doric columns and bearing an inscription alluding to the site. Malona Cemetery closed in 1927 and subsequently moved to a new cemetery in the town of Delrio.
