Imakatsu is famous in Tokyo for its signature dish, "Chuseong Hoon." Of all the Tokyo dishes, the sasami katsu was by far my favorite. I missed that taste so much that I visited Mokatsu in Daegu, where I live. Their torikatsu is made with chicken breast, and it was so incredibly tender and moist that I was amazed with my first bite. My friend even said it tasted even better there. If you're craving the taste of Tokyo or planning a trip to Daegu, this is a must-visit. I highly recommend this place for discovering a new side of chicken breast katsu.

The large tree and gorgeous Christmas decorations are immediately visible, so just exploring this area really captures the Christmas spirit. The distances were even smaller than in Busan, making the pilgrimage relatively easy. In Daegu, a historically significant site is Cheongna Hill. A century ago, the 90-step staircase served as a refuge for protesting students and activists evading Japanese surveillance. It is regarded as the starting point of the March 1st Movement in Daegu. Daegu has introduced five themed alley tours, with the Modern Alley route being particularly moving. 👍 Lee Sang-hwa's Residence: The home of anti-Japanese literary figure Lee Sang-hwa, who was renowned for his patriotic writings during the Japanese occupation. The house was initially slated for redevelopment into a commercial building but was later purchased by the Freemasons and donated to the government for preservation. 👍 Seo Sang-don’s Old House: Seo Sang-don was a prominent textile merchant and a key figure in the National Debt Repayment Movement during the Japanese occupation in 1907. From afar, you can spot the restaurant, and the friendly owner warmly welcomes you. Coincidentally, today's destination is this very place! 👋 For those who don't eat beef, they also offer pork steamed ribs here. Upon checking the menu, I was surprised to find chicken as an option too, though you need to make a reservation in advance for the chicken dish! ✨ Pork Steamed Ribs ₩9,000/serving ✨ Steamed Rice ₩1,000/bowl We ordered two servings of pork steamed ribs and two bowls of rice, totaling ₩20,000. Unless specified, the default spice level is the lowest 🌶️, and there's also a completely non-spicy option ✖️. I found the lowest spice level to be manageable—it looks fiery red but isn't overly spicy. The pork slices come with one or two rib pieces, and after cutting, the portion is quite generous. Some pork pieces are slightly tough and a bit greasy, so pairing them with lettuce and bean sprouts is essential to balance the flavors. The soybean paste soup is very salty and not drinkable directly.

If Gyesan Cathedral is the pinnacle of Catholic churches, then the First Church is undoubtedly the magnificent representative of Christian churches. These two churches stand across the street from each other, a rare urban layout. The story dates back to the reign of King Gojong of Joseon. Due to the increasing number of believers, the church in Busan could no longer accommodate them. In 1893, missionaries from the Northern Presbyterian Church of America arrived here and established the first church in Gyeongbuk Daegu. Initially, they used four tile-roofed houses for preaching. It wasn't until 1933 that the red-brick church was built, featuring Gothic-style spires and red-brick arches, which were considered quite spectacular at the time. Today, the old site has been transformed into a Christian History Museum, showcasing century-old artifacts, the Korean Bible used back then, and annual financial reports. The new site, with its white exterior walls and grandeur, was officially inaugurated in 1996. It now serves as the main venue for activities. On the day of the visit, while excitedly taking photos outside, staff members invited visitors inside for a tour. This building, originally constructed in 1919, was formerly known as "Korea House," a venue for experiencing Korean culture and hosting weddings. After being relocated closer to Jongno Avenue, it now features a courtyard and inner garden, making it a popular tourist attraction in Daegu's Modern Alley. Even tour groups make it a point to stop here for photos. The front building boasts a fresh and unique charm, with a beam marked "February 2, 1919" as a reminder of its history. Large windows allow ample natural light, while the wooden textures create a warm and inviting atmosphere. In addition to seating areas, the window sills are designed like bay windows, where visitors can relax on cushions and enjoy the view of the historic house. The most enchanting spot is the courtyard, where an ancient well has been preserved. The space between the front and rear buildings allows for a breezy outdoor experience, letting visitors appreciate the old house's charm without feeling overheated. The rear building retains the traditional lattice panels, which can be opened for sunlight or closed for privacy. Complementing the historic ambiance, the Starbucks here offers items with a Korean touch, such as thermos cups inspired by traditional shell-inlay craftsmanship. These items exude a distinctly Korean aesthetic. Located in Duryu Park next to E-world, the 83 Tower is a landmark of Daegu. However, since it is inside the amusement park, visitors who are not planning to enjoy the park will need to walk uphill for 20 minutes to reach it. There is no shuttle bus service, so be prepared for the hike. How was this challenging-to-reach 83 Tower built? Originally constructed by Woobang Company in 1984 and named 우방타워 (Woobang Tower), it was later incorporated into E-world as the amusement park was developed, becoming its scenic observation tower. The tower is named 83 Tower because it has 83 floors. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of Daegu city. The screams from the roller coasters and other amusement rides in the park can also be heard here. Interestingly, the tower features two exhibition areas. One showcases items related to Gangnam Style singer PSY, including his outfits and the record-breaking YouTube video. The other exhibition area, located downstairs, displays Hollywood classic movies and memorabilia. Due to unclear signage, many visitors are unaware of this second exhibition area. The restaurant area is currently empty as it is undergoing renovations. If you want to capture stunning views of Daegu from above, this is a great spot for photography. Since the path is entirely uphill, it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Tonghwasa Temple, located on Mount Palgong in Daegu, is said to have been first built in 493 AD during the reign of King Joji of Silla. It was originally called Yugyasa Temple and was later rebuilt by King Simdeok in the 7th year of King Heungdeok. The temple was renamed "Donghwasa" because the paulownia flowers bloomed despite the cold in winter. The temple has undergone numerous destructions and reconstructions, with most of its buildings dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. The current Daewongjeon Hall was rebuilt in 1727. The altar houses Sakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Medicine Buddha, while the courtyard is decorated with colorful lanterns expressing people's prayers. I happened to encounter a cat here. Daegu's city attractions are super concentrated, and if you're good on your feet, you can basically explore them all in one day. Yangnyeongsi, as the name suggests, is a hub for selling traditional herbal medicines. This Korean Medicine Museum is quite popular among visitors. They also offer a herbal foot bath experience for ₩5000, lasting 20 minutes. We tried a similar experience at another place. Here, you can also try on Hanbok for free. However, compared to Busan, the Hanbok here is more simple and unadorned, haha. It's also less restrictive and not time-limited. When we came in the morning, there was a group of foreign tourists, so we decided to come back after lunch. Sure enough, there was no one around, and we even got help from a Korean lady who professionally assisted us in dressing up. She looked stunning too 💗.
