Çavuşin is a great base in Cappadocia for a very full route with pottery, fairy chimneys, cave villages, old streets, rock-cut views and a Rose Valley sunset. My day started in Avanos, continued through Paşabağ and Zelve, and finished with one of the most beautiful evening walks near Çavuşin. 🏺 MORNING: AVANOS POTTERY I started the day in Avanos, the pottery town by the Kızılırmak River. I walked around the old streets and stopped at a local pottery workshop. The experience took around 15 minutes: they prepared the clay, helped during the process, and I made a small heart-shaped plate as my own Cappadocia souvenir. 🏨 BACK TO ÇAVUŞIN After Avanos, I returned to Çavuşin and checked into Arton In Cappadocia. The village is small and calm, with a very convenient location between Göreme, Avanos, Paşabağ, Zelve and Rose Valley. 🪨 AFTERNOON: PAŞABAĞ AND ZELVE Paşabağ is the classic stop for tall fairy chimneys, while Zelve Open Air Museum gives a deeper look at Cappadocia’s former cave village life. Zelve has three valleys, carved rooms, rock-cut churches, pigeon houses, tunnels and old village spaces, so it deserves enough time. 🏘️ OLD ÇAVUŞIN Later, I walked around Old Çavuşin. This small area has terrace cafés, local shops, souvenirs, pottery details, gözleme, fresh juice and views of old cave houses above the village. It works well as a slow break before climbing higher. 🏰 ÇAVUŞIN KALESİ Then I climbed Çavuşin Kalesi, the old rock-cut settlement above the village. The path is dusty and uneven, but the views over Çavuşin, cave rooms, arches and surrounding valleys make it one of the most atmospheric short climbs in the area. 🌄 ROSE VALLEY SUNSET I finished the day with a walk toward Rose Valley / Güllüdere for sunset. The rocks turned pink, copper and gold as the evening light hit the volcanic tuff. After sunset, I walked back to Çavuşin in around 20–30 minutes at a fast pace. 📌 SAVE THIS ROUTE This is a packed itinerary: Avanos pottery → Çavuşin check-in → Paşabağ → Zelve → Old Çavuşin → Çavuşin Kalesi → Rose Valley sunset. For a calmer pace, split it into two days. Çavuşin Pide Fırını is a small roadside café, restaurant and market on the main Göreme–Avanos road in Cappadocia. It is the kind of practical food stop that is easy to miss during the day, but very useful when your hotel is nearby or you want hot Turkish pide to take away after a sunset tour. I noticed it during the day, then came back in the evening to order pide with me. 🥖 WHAT IS PIDE? Pide is a traditional Turkish baked flatbread, usually shaped like a long boat and topped with cheese, minced meat, vegetables, sucuk or mixed fillings. It is served hot from the oven, so it works perfectly as a simple, filling meal after walking, sightseeing or dusty Cappadocia valley routes. 🍽️ MORE THAN JUST PIDE Even though pide was my choice, the menu is wider. I saw options like gözleme, mantı, köfte, tavuk şiş, testi kebabı, breakfast dishes, pizza and künefe. For me, pide felt like the most natural order here because the place has that casual bakery-and-café feeling. 🌿 ROADSIDE CAPPADOCIA ATMOSPHERE The outdoor area gives the place its charm: tables under grape leaves, warm evening lights, Turkish-style textiles on benches, clay pots, small decorative details and a relaxed village-road mood. It is simple and casual, but the setting feels very local in the evening. 🛒 SMALL MARKET BONUS There is also a small market area beside the café, useful if you need water, snacks or non-alcoholic drinks to take back to your hotel. That makes the stop practical not only for dinner, but also for small things after a long day outside. 💸 PRICE IDEA During my visit, pide prices on the menu started around 350 TRY for cheese or minced meat options, with mixed and special toppings higher. Prices can change, but this gives a helpful idea before ordering. 📍 GOOD TO KNOW This is a practical local food stop rather than a polished dinner restaurant. I was excited for that too, but during my trip, the balloons didn’t fly because of the weather. Surprisingly, I wasn’t disappointed at all. Instead, I discovered another side of Cappadocia—one filled with peaceful towns, breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and unforgettable moments. 🤍 🏡 Starting the day in a cave hotel I stayed at Potamia Cave Suites, and it was one of the most unique accommodations I’ve ever experienced. Sleeping inside a traditional cave room is something you simply have to try at least once. The hotel perfectly combines authentic Cappadocian architecture with modern comfort, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Waking up surrounded by ancient stone walls made me feel like I had stepped into another era. ☕ Coffee with an incredible view No trip is complete without a good cup of coffee. Before exploring, I visited Espresso Lab Cappadocia, a beautiful café where I enjoyed a delicious coffee while taking in the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect place to slow down, recharge, and appreciate the beauty of Cappadocia before continuing the adventure. 🌿 Discovering the peaceful town of Avanos One of my favorite places in Cappadocia turned out to be Avanos. Unlike the rocky landscapes that make Cappadocia famous, Avanos is incredibly green. Tall trees line the streets, colorful flowers brighten every corner, and the peaceful Kızılırmak River, the longest river in Turkey, flows gently through the town. One of the highlights was crossing the famous suspension bridge. As soon as you step onto it, you’ll notice that it gently sways beneath your feet. It may feel a little unusual at first, but after a few steps, it becomes part of the fun. Standing in the middle of the bridge, surrounded by beautiful river views, lush greenery, and the quiet atmosphere of Avanos, was one of my favorite moments of the entire trip. 🌉🌳 I also loved watching the ducks swimming in the river while local families enjoyed their afternoon walks nearby. Everything felt calm, peaceful, and authentic. 🎨 The home of Turkish pottery Avanos has been famous for pottery for centuries. As I wandered through the charming streets, I discovered countless ceramic workshops where talented local artisans continue traditions that have been passed down through generations. The handmade pottery, colorful ceramics, and small family-owned shops gave the town so much character. Even if you’re not planning to buy souvenirs, simply exploring these workshops is an experience worth having. 🍽️ An unforgettable dinner After a wonderful day exploring Avanos, I had dinner at Narin Restaurant, and it quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in Cappadocia. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the staff were incredibly kind, and every dish reflected the rich flavors of traditional Turkish cuisine. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, and beautifully prepared. It was the perfect way to end such a memorable day. ❤️ Cappadocia is much more than hot air balloons My trip reminded me that the best travel experiences often come from unexpected moments. Although I didn’t get to see the balloons in the sky, I experienced peaceful mornings in a cave hotel, enjoyed excellent coffee, walked across a gently swaying suspension bridge, explored the charming streets of Avanos, admired centuries-old pottery traditions, tasted authentic Turkish cuisine, and met wonderful people along the way. Save this route for an independent Cappadocia trip. Staying one night in Çavuşin made Cinnes Vadisi, Paşabağı and Zelve easier to combine, while two nights in Göreme worked well for the balloon flight, open-air museum, ATV tour and underground cities. 📍 DAY 1: ÇAVUŞIN, AVANOS & ROSE VALLEY After the night bus, I left my luggage at Artonin Cappadocia and walked through Cinnes Vadisi. Then I visited Avanos for its riverside promenade, old streets and a pottery-wheel workshop. After checking in, I explored Old Çavuşin and Çavuşin Castle, walked through part of Rose Valley and climbed to a viewpoint for sunset. 🎈 DAY 2: BALLOONS, PAŞABAĞ, ZELVE & ATV I watched the balloons at sunrise from Çavuşin. After breakfast, I visited Paşabağı and Zelve Open Air Museum, then moved to Göreme and checked into Premium Cappadocia. In the evening, I joined a two-hour ATV tour through Love Valley to a sunset viewpoint. The bathtub in my room was especially welcome after the dusty ride. 🌄 DAY 3: BALLOON FLIGHT, MUSEUM & TERRACES My birthday began with a hot-air-balloon flight. I rested at the hotel afterwards and visited Göreme Open Air Museum later in the day. Göreme has many cafés and restaurants with terraces overlooking the rock houses. I chose Termessos Terrace Cafe for a relaxed evening. 🕳️ DAY 4: UNDERGROUND CITIES & UÇHİSAR I travelled through Nevşehir to Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı and visited both underground cities in one day. If you are planning a trip to Cappadocia, I highly recommend staying for at least two nights because every morning can be completely different, especially when it comes to the hot air balloons. For our first night, we stayed in Göreme at Aydınlı Cave Hotel because we had booked a hot air balloon flight for the following morning. The hotel had a more rustic and authentic cave-style atmosphere, with stone walls and a slightly raw, traditional feeling. The room was comfortable and full of character, making it a memorable place to stay in Göreme. Unfortunately, our balloon flight was cancelled because of bad weather. We were very disappointed at first because riding a hot air balloon in Cappadocia had always been one of our dreams. However, balloon flights depend heavily on wind and weather conditions, so cancellations can happen even when the sky does not look too bad. The next day, we moved to Azure Cave Suites in Çavuşin Village. We tried to book another balloon flight, but unfortunately all the seats for the following morning were already full, so we could only watch the balloons from the hotel. Azure Cave Suites had a completely different atmosphere from our first hotel. It felt brighter, cuter, and more colorful. The hotel is located high on the hillside, so the view was absolutely beautiful. The breakfast room was on the upper level, where we could enjoy the scenery while eating. The breakfast itself was presented in such a lovely and colorful way, which made the morning feel even more special. We also met a very cute cat at the hotel, which made the stay even more memorable for us. Early the next morning, we walked outside and suddenly saw so many colorful balloons rising into the sky. Even though we could not ride in one, the view was still breathtaking. The balloons floated slowly above the valleys, with the ancient village of Çavuşin standing beautifully in the background. Because Azure Cave Suites is located quite high up, we did not have to travel anywhere to enjoy the view. We simply stepped outside the hotel and watched the balloons fill the sky. It was peaceful, beautiful, and one of those moments that photographs can never fully capture. During the daytime, we also explored Çavuşin Village itself. The village is known for its ancient cave houses, rock formations, and old churches carved into the cliffs. It felt quieter and less crowded than Göreme, which made walking around very enjoyable. We visited Cappadocia in April, when the weather was cool and comfortable for sightseeing. However, spring weather can be unpredictable, so I recommend staying for at least two or three mornings if riding a hot air balloon is very important to you. In the end, even though our balloon flight was cancelled and we could not book another one, watching the balloons rise above Çavuşin from Azure Cave Suites became one of the most beautiful memories of our trip. Çavuşin Kalesi is one of the most dramatic places to understand old Cappadocia. It is called a “castle,” but it is not a classic fortress with towers. It is the upper part of old Çavuşin village — a huge volcanic rock settlement carved directly into the cliff. 🏰 WHAT THIS PLACE WAS For centuries, people lived inside this soft Cappadocian rock. The cliff had cave homes, storage rooms, passages, churches and small carved spaces on different levels. From below, it looks like a honeycomb wall; from inside, you can see how village life was built into the stone. ⛪ HISTORICAL FACTS Çavuşin had a mixed population until the early 20th century, including Orthodox Christian families. One of the most important sites here is the Church of St. John the Baptist, often described as one of the oldest and largest rock-cut churches in Cappadocia, dating to around the 5th–early 6th century. 🪨 WHY IT WAS ABANDONED The old cliff-side settlement became unsafe because of erosion, rockfalls and collapses. People were eventually moved from the old cave houses to safer modern homes, and the upper village became the abandoned rock settlement you see today. 👀 WHAT YOU SEE NOW The climb takes you past cave openings, old rooms, broken stone walls, arches and natural “windows” overlooking Çavuşin village. From the top, you get wide views of the valleys, fairy chimneys, the village below and the Cappadocia landscape. 🥾 GOOD TO KNOW The route is not long, but it is uneven, dusty and rocky in places. Wear proper shoes, avoid unstable openings and do not climb where the rock looks fragile. Cappadocia boasts some of the world's most spectacular weathered landscapes. With towering, steep rock formations shaped like camels, pillars, and cones, it is famous for its "Fairy Chimneys." The perk of joining a group tour is being able to comfortably reach all these must-see spots by tour bus. Since the climate is quite dry and hot, riding a tour bus is a very comfortable choice~ 3️⃣ Taksim Square 💛 Known as the Champs-Élysées of Istanbul ~ Taksim Square, which is also Turkey's Istiklal Avenue, allows you to admire the eclectic mix of Rococo and Baroque architecture on both sides. Weaving through the iconic red vintage trams really gives you a European vibe. Along the street, there are at least hundreds of various Turkish shops, offering everything from trendy European brands to affordable Turkish goods. The famous Turkish bath towels are also souvenirs definitely worth buying~ 4️⃣ Kızılkayalar Taksim 💚 Authentic Turkish shawarma, Islak (wet) burgers, and wraps! Personally, I think the wet burger is quite tasty. The sauce is absolutely delicious, and the price is very affordable, making it totally worth a try. The portions are small, making them perfect as a light snack between meals. 5️⃣ Ancient Roman Underground Cistern 🩵 The Basilica Cistern features huge vaults supported by beautiful, uniquely shaped giant stone pillars. Its magnificent scale makes it look just like an underground palace. It was one of the attractions I wanted to visit the most in Turkey. Purely based on personal preference, I found the lighting down there to be incredibly spectacular and gorgeous. The white lights are especially stunning, while the other colored lights can look a bit spooky~ 6️⃣ Afternoon Tea at The Peninsula Istanbul (5-Star) 💙 A complimentary Peninsula Hotel afternoon tea was included by our travel agency. While enjoying our treats, I noticed that mostly formally dressed locals visit for the hotel's afternoon tea. Although the itinerary was a bit rushed, it was still a lovely experience. Afterward, we hopped directly onto a cruise ship at the hotel's private pier to take in the beautiful coastal scenery of Istanbul. Feeding bread to the seagulls flying alongside the boat made for a perfectly relaxing afternoon. 7️⃣ Migros 💜 Migros (Migros Türk) is one of the largest and most ubiquitous supermarket chains in Turkey. Here, you can stock up on famous Turkish chocolates as souvenirs, and grabbing some ice cream or personal items is also a great idea. Cappadocia is absolutely stunning 🎈 The night before, I was worried the weather wouldn’t be good enough to fly, but at dawn the next day, seeing the sky filled with hot air balloons slowly rising made me feel like my life was complete ✨ 📍Goreme Town This is the main base for hot air balloon experiences. It’s recommended to stay at least two nights to increase your chances of flying. We chose Butterfly Balloons company, and their 5 AM pick-up service was very punctual. Once airborne, you can see the entire surreal landscape of Cappadocia. The pilot thoughtfully rotates the basket to ensure everyone can capture the beautiful scenery. 📍Uchisar Castle After landing the hot air balloon, you can visit this high vantage point. Not only can you overlook all of Goreme, but you can also see the full view of Rose Valley. The castle itself is a cave fortress carved into the rock, perfect for taking Instagram-worthy photos. 📍Devrent Valley Also known as Camel Valley, the rock formations here are incredibly unique! At sunset, the light is very gentle, and the rock pillars turn pink. Many couples choose this spot for proposals. 💡Useful Tips: 1. Book the hot air balloon at least 3 days in advance! We almost missed out. 2. It’s very cold at dawn, so bring a thick jacket but don’t dress too bulky. 3.
