Can a poor traveler escape the heat? Personally test the secret to saving money
Thought you could only go to places with a sea to escape the heat? Actually, within a 2-hour high-speed rail radius, there are more effective ways than air conditioning. These 8 cities, some have admission tickets cheaper than a bowl of noodles, some have entire scenic areas that are free, perfect for those who want to have a great time on a small budget.
1️⃣ Xianning | Hubei
The admission ticket for Chibi Ancient Battlefield is over 100 yuan, but I think it's most worthwhile to go after 5 PM.
⏰ At that time, there are fewer people, the river breeze is very comfortable, and you don't have to squeeze through crowds to see the statues.
📍 Enter from the South Gate, take the path to "Zhou Yu's Reviewing Stand," and you can directly see the bend in the Yangtze River.
⚠️ Don't go on weekends; there are so many tour groups that they can block the exit. A taxi from the city center costs a little over 30 yuan, and carpooling is even cheaper, suitable for friends who want to check it out along the way.
2️⃣ Jiayuguan | Gansu
Jiayuguan Fort is the main attraction, but don't just focus on the core scenic area. I arrived at 3 PM and first detoured to the Gobi Desert outside the fort's West Gate, where you can capture the city wall and snow-capped mountains in the same frame, and it's free admission.
📍 Then walk along the "Overhanging Great Wall" section. If you have good stamina, you can reach the summit in half an hour, and the panoramic view of the fort from above is stunning.
🍜 In the city center, "Old Han's Liangpi" costs 6 yuan a bowl, with a sour and spicy flavor, perfect for when you're tired from walking.
⚠️ Remember to bring water; it's twice as expensive inside the scenic area, and it closes after 5 PM, so don't go at the last minute.
3️⃣ Bijie | Guizhou
Zhijin Cave is truly an underground palace, cool inside as if it has natural air conditioning.
📍 It takes an hour and a half to walk through the main cave, with many steps, but when the light shines down, the stalactites glow yellow, like being in another world.
🍜 Outside the cave entrance, there are roasted potatoes for sale, 3 yuan each, sprinkled with chili powder, great for a snack when you're hungry from walking. Baili Azalea is suitable for viewing flowers in spring, but going in summer is a bit of a waste; it's better to save time for Zhijin Cave.
⚠️ The cave is around 10 degrees Celsius year-round, so bring a jacket, or you'll get cold in the latter half of the journey.
4️⃣ Xiangtan | Hunan
Shaoshan Tourist Area is open for free, but note that if you're driving, you need to reserve a parking space in advance, otherwise you'll have to park several kilometers away and walk in.
⏰ I chose to arrive before 9 AM when there are fewer people, so I could quietly walk along the tree-lined path.
📍 If you want to see water, go to Caojia'ao Waterfall, hidden in the mountains, where the sound of the water is so loud you have to shout to be heard.
🍜 There's an "Old Xiangtan Noodle Restaurant" at the foot of the mountain, where the noodles are hand-cut, and the toppings include pickled long beans and shredded pork, 12 yuan for a filling meal.
⚠️ Don't bring too much luggage; the scenic area has many steps and gravel paths.
5️⃣ Jincheng | Shanxi
Huangcheng Xiangfu is the most worthwhile ancient building in Shanxi that I've visited this year, much more reasonable than those modern imitation ancient streets that charge 80 yuan at every turn.
📍 Enter from the East Gate of the scenic area and first see "Heshan Tower," which is seven stories high. From the top floor, you can see the roofs of the entire ancient castle. Then walk west, through several small courtyards, and the crowd thins out immediately.
⏰ Go after 2 PM; the light hits the brick carvings just right, and you can capture all the details clearly.
🍜 Turn right 500 meters outside the scenic area, and there's a "Xiangfu Snacks" shop. Their liangpi is made with local aged vinegar, sour and appetizing.
⚠️ Don't rent an audio guide; the signal is poor. It's better to listen to tour groups for free.
6️⃣ Jingdezhen | Jiangxi
Taoxichuan Cultural and Creative Zone is best visited at night. The lights on the red brick factory buildings make it look like a forgotten industrial city.
📍 Don't just stroll on the main street; turn into the alley behind the "Taoxichuan Art Museum." There are several independent studios where you can watch artisans throwing pottery up close. The Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Expo Area charges 90 yuan for admission, but I think the "China Ceramic Museum" (free) is more worthwhile. It has more exhibits than the ancient kilns, and the air conditioning is strong.
🍜 The "Xiao Huang Yu" cold noodles in the city center, with orange peel and dried radish, have a very unique taste, 10 yuan a bowl.
⚠️ There's a "Le Tian Tao She Creative Market" on Saturday mornings, but it only runs until noon, so go early if you want to visit.
7️⃣ Dongying | Shandong
The Yellow River Estuary Eco-tourism Area is best visited in summer. When the water level is high, you can clearly see the dividing line between the river and the sea.
📍 Take the scenic area's sightseeing bus to "Yuanwang Tower." Climb up to see the entire wetland and flying birds.
⏰ Go at dusk; the river surface turns golden, and photos taken with your phone look like oil paintings.
🍜 The crucian carp soup at "Gudao Fresh Fish Soup" in the city center is 15 yuan for a large bowl, milky white, with tender fish.
⚠️ Don't go to the boardwalk at the "Yellow River Estuary"; it's sunny and long. The view from the tower is better.
8️⃣ Hangzhou | Zhejiang
Hangzhou's prices are not low, but there are surprisingly free ways to have fun.
📍 "Prince Bay Park" by West Lake is free in summer. Walk further in, towards the mountain, and you'll find it filled with hydrangeas, perfect for photos without crowds. The free area of Xixi Wetland is also very large. Enter from the "Zhoujiacun" entrance and walk along the water; you can see sculling boats passing through the reeds.
⏰ The China Umbrella Museum is west of Gongchen Bridge. There are fewer people after 3 PM, and the silk umbrellas inside showcase exquisite old craftsmanship.
🍜 Nearby, "Xiaohe Zhijie" offers Congbaohui for 8 yuan a pair, with crispy baked dough wrapped around fried dough sticks.
⚠️ Don't eat West Lake vinegar fish at large restaurants like Lou Wai Lou; it's expensive and fishy. The Pian'er Chuan at small roadside eateries is more authentic.
These 8 cities, some are by the river, some lie on the edge of the loess plateau, and some guard ceramic kilns. You can explore them in a weekend without traveling far. If you want to save money, try Jiayuguan or Dongying first; you generally won't go over budget. Do you have a place in mind you want to visit first?
