Like its twin city, Plymouth UK, Brest is a naval port that was extensively bombed during World War II and then rebuilt in a style that doesn’t necessarily bring the tourists running. That said, France’s second largest military port has an impressive maritime heritage that justifies devoting a day to it as part of a tour of Finisterre. The first place to head is the Château de Brest, an imposing building that is one of the few remnants of pre-war Brest and is home to the Musée National de la Marine (entrance €12 in 2026). A couple of hours here will allow you to explore the castle, enjoy the views over the harbour and estuary, and gain an appreciation for just how important Brest was during France’s age of exploration. It is instructive, as well, to realise how differently the lens of history can interpret events depending on which country you come from! Walk across the Pont de Recouvrance to visit the Tour Tanguy with its tableaux of pre-WWII Brest, and you have pretty much covered the medieval buildings of Brest - that’s not to say that there isn’t any other architectural interest here, though. Take the cable car across the River Penfeld (standard public transport ticket, €1.70) to the Ateliers des Capucins and you’ll see vast warehouses now redeveloped into cultural spaces, and also (somewhat comically) home to the Emperor Napoleon’s ceremonial barge - because it was too big to be housed in either of the institutions it was originally taken to. A side-effect of Brest’s preeminence in France’s voyages of discovery was that the new species discovered and brought back by the ships’ botanists needed a permanent home, and so the National Botanical Conservatory was established in a large park to the east of the city. It’s one of the largest collections of threatened plants in the world, and (as a personal aside) the surrounding park has more frogs than I have ever heard together in one place. To get there, take the open-top Blue Line bus from the Gare Routiere (or the bus stop next to the cable car). It uses the same rechargeable ticket as all the other transport in the city so a single ticket costs just €1.70 (July 2026). If botanical gardens aren’t your thing, then the same bus also stops at Oceanopolis, a huge aquarium that’s a big hit with kids. Brest has its own airport (I flew there from Malaga with Volotea) or you can get there by train (TGV from Paris or regional trains from intermediate stops). #brest #france #travel2026

My night started crossing the Pont de Recouvrance (one of Europe's tallest lift bridges) into the Recouvrance district, then down Rue de Siam to a nautical-themed bar on Quai de la Douane. The clientele: naval officers, students from ENSTA, and old salts who've seen every World Cup since '82. We drank Tri Martolos (local Breton IPA) and watched the cargo ships slide past the penzance ferry terminal on screen. The banter was salty, the opinions strong, the cheers sudden and explosive. Brest doesn't do pretension—just honest, wind-blown devotion to the game. The Plan: Arrive via tram to Recouvrance. Bars on Quai de la Douane have the best atmosphere. This was a very enriching museum visit. I haven't a lot of experience with maritime museums but this was one well conducted, informative and maintained museum. It's housed inside a castle which covers a huge area. The exteriors of the chateau and the views from here are stunning too. Apparently, this was amongst the few places in Brest that luckily didn't get bombed during the second world war. So the beautiful structure stands. I paid under 10 euros, actually might have been 8 to be specific. But very well worth it. The audio guide that is provided is in multiple languages and very good. Right from the history of Brest, the dock areas the castle and numerous varieties of ships. It makes for an extensive information. And especially helpful because most of the written descriptions were in French. There will be several stairs and rooms where maritime artefacts are placed. So, yes quite a bit of walking to do. Best meal that I have in brest was at the Le M restaurant rated with 1 michellin star. Waiters were nice and speaks English too. Price is definitely on the more expensive side but worth the try. Definitely go with a partner but I was there on a business trip. Overall brest is a great place for food, would love to visit it again with my partner.....................#brest #food
