Our boatman told us that this spot is usually underwater and only reveals itself during specific low tides. We felt incredibly lucky to actually step foot on it today! This place is even more raw and untouched than the previous island. There isn't a single tree in sight, let alone people—it’s a private sanctuary belonging completely to nature. The highlight of our stay at The Riverhouse! We had the hotel arrange a private Banca boat tour with local fishermen. It suits active travellers who are comfortable with: · small boats · weather-dependent activities · additional transfer planning · flexible daily schedules El Nido and Coron are separate bases, not two nearby parts of one resort area. For most short or one-week trips, choosing one base well is usually more enjoyable than rushing between both. 🏖️ BORACAY — FOR THE EASIEST BEACH-FOCUSED STAY Choose Boracay when the main priority is: · beach time · comfortable accommodation · convenient restaurants · relaxed evenings · minimal daily route planning The arrival still involves an airport-to-port transfer, a boat crossing and a final island transfer. It is especially suitable for: · families · mixed-age groups · first-time visitors · travellers wanting beach plus sightseeing · groups preferring one main hotel base 🌊 CEBU — FOR THE WIDEST VARIETY Choose Cebu for city experiences, Mactan resorts, diving, coastal activities and multiple trip styles. But Cebu is not one compact beach destination. Cebu City, Mactan and the different coastal areas are not interchangeable. Choose the exact experience first, then choose the base. Trying to combine too many areas can turn the holiday into long drives, frequent hotel changes and unnecessary fatigue. 🏄 SIARGAO — FOR SURF AND SLOW-ISLAND ATMOSPHERE Choose Siargao for surf, cafés, palms and flexible days. General Luna is the most practical base for accommodation, restaurants and visitor services. Staying farther away may feel quieter, but transport, dining and road access need more checking. Siargao suits travellers who enjoy island rhythm and do not need every day to follow a fixed attraction list. 📅 HOW MANY DAYS? 4 DAYS Choose one destination and one main base. 7 DAYS Exploring one island properly is usually the safer choice. Combining El Nido and Coron is possible, but the transfer burden should be accepted deliberately—not treated as a simple add-on. 10 DAYS Two destinations can work when: · flights or ferries align sensibly · hotel changes remain limited · weather buffers are protected · the experiences are genuinely different More days should create more enjoyment—not merely more transfers. 🌦️ WHEN SHOULD YOU GO? January to May is generally an easier starting window for many beach-focused trips, but weather patterns are not identical across every island. Palawan and Boracay are usually easier during the drier months. Bohol and Cebu remain possible across a wider part of the year, although local conditions vary. Siargao follows a different rhythm: its stronger surf period is not necessarily its easiest general-weather period. My island trip luggage checklist (only non-obvious items and things often forgotten) First and foremost: 🧳Carry-on luggage only on all trips with transfers! In the Philippines, we had 7kg backpacks each💪🏻 This way, your precious belongings will definitely arrive at your final destination without getting lost or damaged. The "carry everything you own" rule comes in very handy here. 🧳If I do check my luggage, I put an Airtag in it and wrap the suitcase in plastic wrap. In situations where you really want carry-on luggage only but are overweight, dress as much as possible, stuffing everything you can into your pockets like Wassermans. And don't forget that a handbag (which can vary in capacity) and photo/video equipment with a bag are not counted as carry-on luggage but are kept separately. Read the airline's rules and look for loopholes. 🧳Make photocopies of your passports, print out hotel and flight reservations, and insurance. Insurance is available on the Cherehapa service. Second: 💊Ersefuril or Enterol for stomach cramps 💊Lymphomyosot for long-haul flights for lymph congestion and swelling 💊Troxevasin and similar medications after a long flight or a long day on your feet 💊Enterosgel in single-serving sachets, plus Smecta and Regidron 💊Anti-motion sickness medication, if the roads are winding or there are ferries 💊Wet wipes (universal) 💊Anticidal bandage Next, medications of your choice. In Asia, unlike Cuba and the Dominican Republic, pharmacies usually offer high-quality and effective medications, but the selection can be limited. In the Philippines, for example, you won't find anything for everything except Paracetamol. So, consider different health scenarios and bring extra: some might need decongestant nasal drops, others digestive enzymes... Third: 🦟Insect repellents. Any body lotions, electric foggers, or coils. Mosquitoes can be downright savage. 👺👹 Fourth: 🤿Bring your own mask and snorkel, but you can safely rent fins with socks underneath. Wearing socks serves two purposes: to maintain hygiene and to swim comfortably without worrying about chafing your feet. And if you already have sores on your feet, or if you can't even put on fins due to pain, use socks. Next: 🩱A Lycra suntan vest. A basic one. I'd also bring leggings. 🖊️A regular pen for filling out declaration forms and other documents upon arrival. 🔪A plastic knife for cutting fruit (a plastic one will be allowed in carry-on baggage). It's better to peel and cut fruit bought at the market yourself; it will be cleaner and less likely to cause problems. 🎒A waterproof dry bag for water excursions ...and to protect your belongings from the rain! In areas with powerful waterfalls or heavy rain, valuables and documents without a dry bag will be damaged by moisture. You can buy a nice lightweight dry bag and always carry it instead of a bag. I bought my dry bag at the Sport Marathon store. I love it. ☔️Raincoats. Specifically, these, not umbrellas, as not all airlines allow umbrellas in carry-on luggage. Plus, with an umbrella, you could get swept away by a typhoon like Mary Poppins. 😉 🧥Windbreaker or yachting jacket Needed when boating to protect yourself from the wind, waves, and sun. In February 2025, I visited Busuanga as part of a two-week trip around the Philippines. I flew in from Cebu, from Lapu-Lapu. The airport is very simple: a small building with minimal navigation, typical for a provincial terminal. When I got outside, I found out that the tourist bus had already left. I didn’t want to wait for the next one, so I took a private van for about 2000 pesos. Most travelers go directly to Coron town, but I decided not to stay there. Instead, I stayed in Busuanga municipality (not the island, but the local town area). I found my hotel by chance — Josefina’s Tourist Inn. At first, I planned to stay in Coron, but after seeing how crowded it is, I chose a quieter place. I stayed there for seven nights and did not regret it. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with no issues. One thing that really stood out was the food — a good variety of dishes and very reasonable prices. Overall, the value for money was very solid. Busuanga itself is not a resort town, but more of a small provincial area. It’s calm, without crowds or constant tourist activity. At the same time, it’s not isolated — you still have everything basic you need, just without heavy infrastructure. An important point is the prices. They are significantly lower than in Coron town. This applies to accommodation, food, and daily expenses. The difference is noticeable. At the same time, you won’t find the same variety of places as in Coron. There are no chains like McDonald’s, and most shopping is done in small local sari-sari stores. But this actually adds to the overall experience. To move around the island, I rented a motorbike. Without it, you are very limited in mobility. With a bike, it’s easy to plan your own routes and explore freely. I went to Coron town several times, because all island hopping tours start from there. Coron is very different — more crowded, more expensive, and generally more hectic. In my opinion, the price-to-quality ratio there is not always justified, but there are no real alternatives for tours. One of the tours cost around 1600 pesos. It included lagoons, swimming stops, and very clear water. The water is warm and really transparent. You can also rent a transparent kayak if you want. I also visited Calauit Island, where Calauit Island National Park is located. Getting there was not easy — I had to arrange a boat and coordinate the return. But the experience was worth it. You can see giraffes and zebras not in a zoo, but in a more natural environment. What impressed me most was feeding a giraffe — it costs about 50 pesos and leaves a strong impression. In total, I spent about 800 dollars during my week in Busuanga, including accommodation, food, and activities. This is a good option if you want to avoid tourist crowds but still have access to the main attractions.

The guide will break shells to attract them to feed. Photo 6 shows a nearby private small beach. · 3️⃣ Twin Lagoons (photos 1 and 3) are the highlight of this route. The two lagoons are connected by a narrow channel where you must lie down in the kayak to pass through. There is a reef rock at the connection point where you can stand and get a perfect photo ✅. · 4️⃣ Smith Beach (photo 7) is the lunch stop on this route. The small beach is also very beautiful, and aerial shots can capture the nearby heart-shaped lagoon (photo 8). · 5️⃣ Shipwreck Frame and Coral Garden are two snorkeling spots on this route. The shipwreck frame mostly shows only the bow, but the fish schools here are truly dense (photo 9 below). · Route C 1️⃣ Luzon Shipwreck (photos 9 above and 10) is the shallowest shipwreck in Coron. At low tide, the hull even emerges above the water surface, making snorkeling easy. The ship is home to a large school of small fish, densely packed. · 2️⃣ Regie Cruz Shipwreck (photos 11 and 12) is another relatively shallow shipwreck, with the bow about three to four meters deep, also suitable for snorkeling. · 3️⃣ Pass Island (photo 13) is the lunch stop on this route. You can take a light hike (a small hill that takes about ten minutes to walk). Usually, you stay on the island for two hours to fully enjoy the white sandy beach. · 4️⃣ Coral Garden (photo 4 below) has excellent coral, and we saw a large school of yellowfin trevally. · Island hopping usually returns to the pier around 4 or 5 pm. Be sure to go up Mount Tapyas to watch the sunset. At dusk, the entire sea is dyed pink, creating a very dreamy scene.
