Don’t just know Niagara Falls! Upstate New York hides some of the world’s top hidden waterfall clusters—gorges, water curtains, rainbows, mossy cliffs—every step feels like walking into a fantasy movie. More healing than the big city, more photogenic than trendy spots, this natural paradise is a must for nature lovers and photographers alike 🍃! 📍 Core Waterfall Clusters | Check in at 5 Dreamy Secret Spots 1️⃣ Watkins Glen State Park | Fairy Tale Gorge with Water Curtain✨ A must-visit in the Finger Lakes! Water plunges from a 100-meter cliff into a deep pool, with a deep gorge and mist filling the air—truly breathtaking. · Best views: Overlook from the viewing platform, hike down to the base for a close-up roar · Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆, easy short trail · Admission: $9 per car, open year-round 3️⃣ Ausable Chasm | Adirondacks Earth Rift🌊 Known as the “Grand Canyon of North America,” this sandstone gorge formed over 10,000 years features cliffs up to 150 feet high. On the U.S. side, get up close to the roaring Horseshoe Falls, often with double rainbows in the mist—utterly awe-inspiring. · Must-do: Maid of the Mist boat tour (goes under the falls, raincoat essential), Cave of the Winds (walk right under the falls) · Admission: State park free, boat tour $28 per person 🗓️ Best Time & Route Planning Best Seasons · May-June: Highest water flow, most spectacular waterfalls, fewer tourists · September-October: Colorful foliage with waterfalls, prime photography season · July-August: Summer retreat, great for hiking and wading, more visitors 3-Day Highlight Route (No backtracking) Day 1: New York City → Watkins Glen (gorge hike + water curtain photos) → Stay in Finger Lakes Day 2: Taughannock Falls (cliff waterfall) → Kaaterskill Falls (forest secret spot) → Stay in Kaaterskill Day 3: Ausable Chasm (grand canyon adventure) → Niagara Falls (stunning finale) → Return 🚗 Transportation & Practical Tips Transportation · Driving: About 4 hours from NYC, 1-2 hours between spots, highly recommended for flexible sightseeing stops · Public Transit: New York State buses to Ithaca/Glens Falls, then local transport What to Wear & Bring · Shoes: Non-slip hiking shoes (trails can be slippery, water shoes preferred) · Clothing: Quick-dry clothes + light jacket (mist can be cool), light or vintage styles for photos · Essentials: Raincoat (heavy mist), waterproof camera, sunscreen, trekking poles Avoid Pitfalls 1. What if you could follow Odysseus’ entire journey from Homer’s Odyssey on a modern map? The problem is that Homer never gives us a precise GPS route. Some places can be connected to real locations, while others remain legendary or heavily debated. Here’s how the journey is traditionally reconstructed 👇 📍 1. Troy — Hisarlık, Türkiye 🇹🇷 Odysseus begins his journey home after the Trojan War. Ancient Troy is generally identified with the archaeological site of Hisarlık in modern Türkiye. Today, you can walk through the remains of the ancient city and see the landscape surrounding the legendary battlefield. ⬇️ 🌊 2. Ismarus — Thrace 🇬🇷/🇹🇷 Odysseus and his men raid the city of the Cicones before being driven away. The location is generally associated with the region of ancient Thrace, although the exact site is uncertain. ⬇️ 🏝️ 3. Land of the Lotus-Eaters Odysseus reaches a mysterious land where the inhabitants eat the lotus plant and lose their desire to return home. Homer doesn’t give us enough information to identify it confidently. Various places in the Mediterranean have been suggested over the centuries. ⬇️ 👁️ 4. Land of the Cyclops Then comes one of the most famous episodes: Polyphemus, the Cyclops. Ancient traditions later connected the Cyclopes with Sicily 🇮🇹, particularly the volcanic landscape around Mount Etna. But again — Homer never gives us a confirmed modern location. ⬇️ 💨 5. Aeolia — Island of Aeolus Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag containing the winds. The story’s Aeolia is mythical, but the real Aeolian Islands lie north of Sicily and are one of the most commonly suggested geographical connections. ⬇️ 🧙♀️ 6. Circe’s Island — Aeaea Odysseus arrives at Circe’s home, where some of his crew are transformed into pigs. The exact island is unknown. Ancient traditions associated Circe with the Italian coast, especially Monte Circeo. ⬇️ 💀 7. The Underworld Odysseus travels to the realm of the dead to consult the prophet Tiresias. This is firmly mythological, although Homer places the journey at the far edge of the known world. ⬇️ 🎶 8. The Sirens Back at sea, Odysseus encounters the Sirens and has himself tied to the mast so he can hear their song without steering the ship toward them. Their exact location is unknown. ⬇️ 🌊 9. Scylla & Charybdis Odysseus must navigate between the sea monster Scylla and the deadly whirlpool Charybdis. This episode is traditionally associated with the Strait of Messina 🇮🇹, between Sicily and mainland Italy — one of the most famous real-world geographical connections in the Odyssey. ⬇️ 🐄 10. Thrinacia — Island of the Sun God The crew reaches the island of Helios and are warned not to kill his sacred cattle. They don’t listen. The exact location of Thrinacia is unknown. ⬇️ 🌊 11. Calypso’s Island — Ogygia After losing his ship and crew, Odysseus ends up with Calypso, who keeps him on her island for years. Ogygia has never been reliably identified. Many islands have been proposed, but there is no accepted modern location. ⬇️ 🏛️ 12. Scheria — Land of the Phaeacians Odysseus finally reaches the Phaeacians, who help him return home. Their kingdom is traditionally connected with Corfu 🇬🇷, although the identification remains debated. ⬇️ 🏠 13. Ithaca — Greece 🇬🇷 Finally, Odysseus reaches home. Modern Ithaki is a real Greek island in the Ionian Sea and has long been associated with Homer’s Ithaca — although scholars still debate whether it is exactly the island Homer had in mind. 🗺️ So… can you actually follow Odysseus today? Partly. You can visit places strongly connected with the tradition: 🇹🇷 Troy / Hisarlık 🇮🇹 Sicily 🇮🇹 Strait of Messina 🇮🇹 Aeolian Islands 🇬🇷 Corfu 🇬🇷 Ithaki But many stops — the Lotus-Eaters, Ogygia, Thrinacia, the Sirens and others — remain impossible to locate with certainty. And that’s what makes the journey so fascinating. The Odyssey isn’t a modern travel itinerary. It’s a mixture of real Mediterranean geography, ancient knowledge, legend and mythology — with just enough real places to make you wonder how much of Odysseus’ world was inspired by places ancient Greeks actually knew.

That’s a great route, but I would make one adjustment. Instead of returning to Boston from Niagara Falls, return to New York City unless your flight home departs from Boston. Watkins Glen, which I have been thinking about for years, did not disappoint me at all. It was absolutely stunning! 🥰 Although it is also a canyon park, it follows a beautiful route. The main Gorge Trail is not long, only 1 mile, but every step offers a new view, filled with numerous waterfalls, water curtain caves, winding narrow gorges, and unique rock formations, like a fairyland.

#December Travel Support Event It was really fun to look at the Hulk mask and other items at a souvenir shop in New York. The inside of the shop, which was filled with various superhero-related items, was full of color and design. The Hulk mask and other Marvel character souvenirs were displayed all over the shop, making it feel like I was in a movie. When I tried on the Hulk mask, its large and powerful appearance was really impressive. I had a great time looking at humorous and imaginative items at a souvenir shop in New York. New York, the moment I fell in love with the world of superheroes
