ROYS PEAK 🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿 Located in Wanaka, this trekking route is considered one of New Zealand's iconic trails and a dream destination for many travelers. But let me tell you, it's quite a challenge!✌🏻 The round-trip distance is 16 KM, and it supposedly takes about 5-6 hours to complete (at least that's what they say). However, for me, 5-6 hours is not enough. For someone like me, it took a solid 9 hours! 😂 I started my hike at 9:40 AM and reached the summit after 5 hours. It felt like climbing Phu Kradueng all over again, taking breaks here and there. I was so exhausted and thought about giving up multiple times, even asking my companion, "Why did I put myself through this?" 😂 But in the end, I kept going. When I finally reached the summit, I was on the verge of tears. The exhaustion, the fatigue, and the breathtaking view made it all so worth it. On the way down, I aimed to reach the parking lot by 5 PM. However, about 2 kilometers from the end, I had a little encounter with a black cow. We locked eyes, and it seemed like it was about to charge at me. Startled, I twisted my ankle and had to hobble my way down. By the time I reached the parking lot, it was nearly 7 PM. In total, I spent 9 hours on this trail, but it was absolutely worth it.

One thing I loved about Queenstown is that you don’t have to do a difficult hike to get beautiful lake and mountain views. I did this easy walk around the Queenstown waterfront and Te Kararo Queenstown Gardens, and it ended up being such a nice way to spend a few hours without leaving town. I started around the Queenstown waterfront and followed the lakeside path towards the gardens. Once you get away from the busier harbour area, it becomes much quieter, with Lake Whakatipu on one side and mountain views almost the entire way. 🌊 Queenstown Harbour & Waterfront The harbour itself is already worth walking around. You get beautiful views across the lake towards the mountains, and I loved watching the boats come and go. From here, I just kept following the waterfront towards Queenstown Gardens . 🌿 Te Kararo Queenstown Gardens The gardens are right beside the town centre, but once I walked inside, it felt surprisingly peaceful. There are huge old trees, open lawns and smaller paths through the gardens. The official council information also notes that the gardens have walking paths, flower beds and a disc-golf course. My favourite part was continuing around the peninsula loop. The path eventually opens up to wide views across Lake Whakatipu and the surrounding mountains — definitely the highlight for me. The peninsula loop also connects with the wider Queenstown Trail. 🏔️ The views This is what I enjoyed most. Lake, mountains, little jetties, forest paths and constantly changing views as you walk around the peninsula. I kept stopping to take photos. And because you're so close to Queenstown, you can also look back across the water towards town and the surrounding hills. 🥾 How difficult is it? Very easy compared with Queenstown's proper hikes. The main paths around the gardens and waterfront are well formed, and you can simply turn around whenever you've had enough. I wouldn't really call this a hike — it's more of a relaxed scenic walk. I'd allow around 1–2 hours if you want to wander slowly, take photos and enjoy the gardens rather than rushing through. 📍 Where to start Te Kararo Queenstown Gardens Queenstown 9300, New Zealand The easiest way is simply to start from Queenstown Bay / the town centre waterfront and walk towards the gardens. You don't need a car — the waterfront and gardens connect directly with central Queenstown. Located on the shores of Lake Wānaka in New Zealand, the famous Wānaka Tree, or That Wānaka Tree, is one of the country’s most photographed natural landmarks. Standing alone in the lake, its twisted branches and mountain backdrop make it look almost unreal, especially when reflected perfectly on the water. But there’s another beautiful tree nearby that often gets overlooked. The giant tree beside the Wānaka Tree is much larger and creates a completely different perspective, making it worth checking out when you visit🌳 I visited during autumn, hoping to see the iconic scene I had seen countless times online, with the tree standing dramatically in the water. What I didn’t expect was the low water level when I arrived. The pools are glacial-flour turquoise, not moss — the mossy forest is the 1.2 km after the first bridge where the beech closes overhead and the ground is a green sponge. I drove SH6 from Fox Glacier, arrived 9 a.m. in March. Day 17°C, forest 12°C, moss dripping from overnight rain. Wore trail-runners; the track is wide gravel then board, the bridge deck sways. Mistake: I walked it at 1 p.m. in January — bus groups 50+, the first swing bridge was a photo queue, the mossy beech tunnel echoed with voices. Before 9 or after 4. Second mistake: I swam in the blue pool — DOC sign: no swimming, cold + log strain, 3 rescues/yr, 200 NZD fine. Third: I brought a drone "for the pool from above" — Mt Aspiring NP drone ban, ranger at Cameron Flat, 400 NZD, SD card gone. Before visiting Dunedin, I honestly didn't know what to expect. I knew it had beautiful old buildings, but I didn't realize that just outside the city, there was a completely different world waiting — rugged coastlines, penguins, seals and giant albatross. And that contrast became my favourite thing about Dunedin. 🏛️ The City Has a Completely Different Feel Walking around central Dunedin feels almost like stepping into another era. The city has a strong Scottish influence, with beautiful Victorian and Edwardian buildings everywhere. My first stop was Dunedin Railway Station, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. The detailed architecture is impressive, and it's definitely worth taking a few minutes to walk around rather than simply taking a quick photo and leaving. 🌊 Then Everything Changes The real surprise came when I drove towards the Otago Peninsula. The city slowly disappeared behind me. The roads became quieter. The hills opened up. And suddenly I was surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery. This is where Dunedin feels completely different from a typical city trip. 🦭 Wildlife Was the Highlight The Otago Peninsula is famous for its wildlife. Depending on the season and conditions, you may see penguins, fur seals, sea lions and albatross along the coastline. I expected Arrowtown to be a quick stop from Queenstown. Instead, I found myself slowing down almost immediately. Just 20 minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown feels completely different. There are old stone buildings, tiny miners’ cottages, tree-lined streets, the Arrow River and mountains surrounding the town. It feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a little New Zealand town that simply happens to be incredibly photogenic. 🍂 Buckingham Street — The Heart of Arrowtown The best place to start is Buckingham Street. This historic street follows the original gold-rush town layout, with heritage buildings now home to cafés, restaurants, galleries and independent shops. Continue along the tree-lined avenue and you'll reach the famous row of old miners’ cottages. There are more than 60 historic buildings around Arrowtown, so I found the best way to experience it was simply to walk without rushing. And if you visit during autumn, the whole place becomes even more beautiful. April and May are especially famous for the red, orange and golden foliage. 🥾 Walk Where Gold Miners Once Walked Arrowtown was established in 1862 during the Otago gold rush, after gold was discovered in the Arrow River. At its peak, more than 1,500 miners were camping around the river, and the town grew rapidly. Today, you can still see many reminders of that period around the town and riverbanks. I particularly liked that the history isn't locked inside a museum. You can walk along the river, explore the old buildings and imagine what this tiny settlement must have looked like when miners were arriving here hoping to strike it rich. 🏚️ Don't Miss the Chinese Settlement One of the most meaningful places to visit is the Chinese Settlement beside Bush Creek. Chinese miners came to the Otago goldfields from the 1860s, and some lived in small shelters around Arrowtown. A number of these structures have been preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into a very different side of the gold-rush story. It's easy to walk past because the area is quiet and understated. But for me, that's exactly why it was worth visiting. 🏛️ Lakes District Museum If you want to understand Arrowtown rather than simply photograph it, spend some time at the Lakes District Museum. It's located on Buckingham Street inside historic buildings and covers Māori history, the gold rush, early settlers and the development of the wider Queenstown-Lakes region. You can also try gold panning during the warmer months. I would definitely include the museum if you have a couple of hours in town. ☕ The Best Part? Doing Almost Nothing Arrowtown doesn't need a packed itinerary. Walk the historic streets.
Stop for coffee.
Browse the little shops.
Follow the river.
Take photos of the mountains.
Then sit down and enjoy the afternoon. There are also plenty of walking, hiking and cycling tracks around town, with more than 100 km of walking trackspromoted by the local tourism organisation. That's what makes Arrowtown different from Queenstown for me. Queenstown feels energetic. Arrowtown feels like a deep breath. ❤️ My Experience What surprised me most was how easy it was to fall into Arrowtown's slower rhythm. I originally thought I would spend an hour here and leave. But between the historic cottages, autumn trees, little cafés and mountain scenery, I ended up wanting more time. Arrowtown isn't the kind of place where you need to chase one spectacular viewpoint.
