Procida is an island near Naples. Depending on the ferry, it takes around 30mins to one hour. There are several ferries each day, but be sure to check the schedule beforehand. I recommend going to Procida as you'll be a world away from the busy city life of Naples. Although Naples is an exciting city with lots to see and do, it's also quite a respite to slow things down and see a more sleepy Italian village. Procida is exactly that. You will most likely arrive on the northern side of the island. There seems to be the main town there. It's a lovely collection of color houses along the main promenade. There are also small squares with churches and several small beaches. You can rent a motorbike to go further south and explore a bit of the other side of the island. There seems to be other beaches which are more memorable further inland. Along the main strip, there are also several restaurants. It's a good short outing from Naples. Head here for a quieter side of life. Keep in mind things are really quiet in winter (possibly low season) so it's perhaps much more lively in the summer months. The views from the ferry ride are also lovely; this is especially true when arriving back into Naples!

During my extended trip through Italy and Southern France, the place I was most excited to see—more than Amalfi or the lavender fields—was this hidden gem! Procida Island, a tranquil fishing village, is largely unknown to Japanese travelers and doesn’t appear in standard guidebooks. Even in peak season during July, the island remains uncrowded, offering a peaceful atmosphere. Located just 40-60 minutes from Naples by ferry or high-speed boat, Procida is easily accessible, and its attractions can be explored on foot. The ferry docks at Marina Grande on the northern side of the island. From there, you can wander through charming alleys filled with local life and occasional shops, making the walk enjoyable. Heading south, I braved the direct sunlight (with little shade to protect me) and climbed to the hilltop near the San Michele Abbey. Finally, I reached the viewpoint—and there it was! The scenery I had been dreaming of! Rows of pastel-colored houses lining the bay, softer in tone than those in Amalfi. The island’s peninsula-like shape, surrounded by the sea, reminded me of Mont Saint-Michel or Hakodate. The area was serene, with sea birds and small boats dotting the view. Even at the viewpoint, there were only 0-8 people at any given time, perhaps due to the abbey’s midday break. I fell for Procida as soon as I saw the view from the Terra Murata. A tangle of houses painted in pink, yellow, blue and green tumbled towards Marina Corricella, the sun setting behind it and lighting up the sky in a blaze of orange and pink. Small fishing boats were dotted in the water—the fishermen use the lavishly bright buildings to find their way home. Procida seems to want to keep its secret to itself, although it’s popular with napoletani looking for a summer escape from the steaming, chaotic city. The tiny island is only 4 square kilometres and we walked everywhere—to the black sand beaches that ring the island, almost empty during the week and bustling with families on weekends; and through the winding narrow streets in the centre, the high walls hiding cube shaped houses and lush gardens. Paintwork is faded and crumbling, doors are ancient and rusted, and the streets are enlivened with pink bougainvillea and tiny white jasmine, their scent accompanying us on our strolls. I wanted to have one of those colorful houses and to be able to wake up every day with the sound of the boats of the fishermen arriving at the port accompanied by seagulls. What to see on 24 hours? 1) Marina Grande (where you can get there by ferry from Naples). 2) Palazzo d'Avalos and Terra Murata (for an incredible view from above). 3) Marina della Corricella (pictured and absolutely the most suggestive place to stay). 4) the beach of Chiaia (if you decide to have lunch here there are boats that make free shuttle service from the Marina di Coricella).
