We absolutely love road trips—a car gives you the ultimate freedom to just pull over halfway between your departure point and your destination. This is Opolye—the central part of the Vladimir region, as well as parts of the Yaroslavl and Ivanovo regions, where the most ancient Russian cities are located: Vladimir, Suzdal, Gavrilov Posad, Yuryev-Polsky, Rostov the Great, Pereslavl-Zalessky, and the village of Bogolyubovo. This area still preserves unique monuments of pre-Mongol architecture from the 12th and 13th centuries. But Opolye is also about magnificent landscapes: soft, rolling hills, endless fields, winding rivers (the Nerl, Koloksha, and Kamenka), forest lakes, and lonely churches on the horizon. Here, history is woven right into the landscape itself. These are the very fields that drew our ancestors here a thousand years ago. Actually, the term “Opolye” only took shape in the 19th century thanks to the development of Russian science, but the word itself has been known since ancient times and meant arable land. On a satellite map, Opolye still looks like a “bald spot” in the middle of the forests. The fertile soil here (Vladimir chernozem) yielded great harvests of rye, wheat, barley, millet, flax, hemp, and legumes. This surplus led to trade with other regions, providing the resources to expand political influence and attract new populations to settle the lands. Slavs fleeing raids migrated here, sparking demographic growth. Cities, churches, monasteries, and fortifications were built. Animal husbandry, crafts, trade, architecture, and literature all flourished—forming the unique cultural tradition of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. Opolye provided the material foundation that turned the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality into one of the key centers of ancient Rus. It was precisely during the 12th and 13th centuries that white-stone architecture blossomed: the principality had the funds to invite highly skilled craftsmen and construction managers, and to transport white stone from afar. Very few unaltered churches dating back to the 16th century like this remain in Russia—only a few dozen still stand. We haven't had the chance to go inside yet, but sources say that "in the 1720s, the church's interior was adorned with murals for the first time, which have survived to this day with only minor losses. The lower tier of these frescoes, depicting the life of Saint Isidore, is especially fascinating." The church sits in a hollow surrounded by earthwork ramparts built between 1632 and 1634, nearly 70 years after the church itself was completed (designed by Dutch engineer Jan Cornelius van Rodenburg). The Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky Monastery in Rostov Veliky is another incredibly powerful place we visited for the first time! Since we came on a weekday afternoon while it was drizzling, there were practically no tourists around. Besides us, there were only three other women, and that was it... I loved how incredibly quiet and peaceful it is here—no rushing or bustling. Yet, you can feel the energy of this place in every cell of your body! Candles in every church are freely available: take as many as you need, just don't take them outside. You can leave a donation at your own discretion, whatever you can afford. It's rare to find churches like this nowadays. The monastery also features a hotel, a very cozy outdoor summer veranda with tables, swings, and even a playground) The grounds are beautifully manicured, clean, and stunning. The monastery evoked a deep sense of grace and made me want to explore everything, linger a little longer, and reflect on eternity 🙏🏻 I highly recommend visiting 🤗🩷

It was here that most of the exterior scenes of "Ivan Vasilievich: A Change of Profession" were filmed—the Kremlin played the role of the Moscow Kremlin during the time of Ivan the Terrible. While walking around, it's easy to recognize the passageways along the walls, the courtyard, and the bell tower. Films such as "Ruslan and Lyudmila," "The Incredible Adventures of Italians in Russia," "My Sweet and Tender Beast," "Boris Godunov," and others were also filmed here. I recommend setting aside at least two hours to explore the grounds and museums, and even more if you enjoy leisurely strolls and photography. This is a place you'll want to return to.
