5-day in-depth Xi'an tour | City + Lintong + Guanzhong, balancing history and scenery
Many first-time visitors to Xi'an share the same feeling:
This city isn't ideal for aimless wandering.
Xi'an's attractions are densely packed—the City Wall, Bell and Drum Towers, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Terracotta Warriors, Huaqing Palace, Qinling Mountains, Famen Temple, Qianling Mausoleum... each is worth a visit. However, poor route planning can easily lead to long days of walking, high physical exertion, and few attractions actually seen.
Therefore, for your first visit to Xi'an, we recommend this 5-day route:
Spend the first 2 days exploring the city, the third day in Lintong visiting the Terracotta Warriors, the fourth day enjoying the natural scenery of the Qinling Mountains, and the fifth day experiencing Guanzhong culture. You'll get a taste of history, culture, night views, food, and mountain scenery.
Day 1 | Classic city wall & bell/drum tower route
Route: Yongning Gate > Xi'an City Wall > Bell Tower > Drum Tower > Muslim Quarter > Gao's Courtyard
We recommend starting your first day by checking out the old city area of Xi'an.
Yongning Gate is the iconic entrance to the Xi'an City Wall and is great for photos. Once on the wall, you can walk or choose to cycle. The wall is quite long, so there's no need to walk the entire length; just pick a section to experience it.
In the afternoon, head to the Bell Tower and Drum Tower area, which is the core of the old city. The Bell Tower is best for long-distance photos, while the area around the Drum Tower has many shops and a wide variety of dining options.
In the evening, you can stroll around the Muslim Quarter to soak up the vibrant nightlife of Xi'an. If you want to see folk performances or traditional courtyard architecture, you can also stop by Gao's Courtyard.
Focus for the day: Getting a first impression of Xi'an's old city style.
Food recommendations: Roujiamo (meat burger), liangpi (cold noodles), zenggao (steamed cake), sour plum drink, and grilled meat skewers.
Day 2 | Immersive Tang Dynasty culture route
Route: Shaanxi History Museum > Giant Wild Goose Pagoda > Tang Paradise > Qujiang Pool Relics Park > Grand Tang All Day Mall
The second day is for the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Qujiang area.
The Shaanxi History Museum is worth a visit and should be a priority for first-time visitors to Xi'an. Viewing the artifacts before touring the city will give you a better appreciation of Xi'an's heritage as the capital of 13 dynasties.
After visiting the museum, you can head to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. It is an iconic landmark of Xi'an, and the surrounding square is perfect for photos.
In the afternoon, you can head to Tang Paradise and Qujiang Pool Relics Park to slow down your pace. In the evening, focus on visiting the Grand Tang All Day Mall; the atmosphere is even better after the lights come on, making it perfect for photos, watching performances, and shopping.
Focus for the day: Experiencing the atmosphere of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.
Food recommendations: Biangbiang noodles, hulutou paomo (pork intestine soup with bread), osmanthus cake, and Bingfeng soda.
Day 3 | Classic Lintong imperial mausoleum route
Route: Huaqing Palace > Lishan Mountain > Terracotta Warriors > Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Park > "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow"
The third day is for a one-day trip to Lintong.
Spend the morning visiting Huaqing Palace and Lishan Mountain. This area preserves Tang palace ruins and hot spring culture, and climbing up offers views of Lintong.
The afternoon is dedicated to visiting the Terracotta Warriors, a must-see attraction in Xi'an. Leave plenty of time for this; we don't recommend rushing through it. If you are interested in Qin culture, you can also visit the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Park.
If time and energy permit in the evening, you can watch "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow." The live-action performance combined with night views, landscapes, and lighting makes for a great experience.
Focus for the day: Learning about Qin, Han, and Tang history.
Food recommendations: Yangrou paomo (mutton soup with bread), persimmon cakes, pomegranate juice, and youpo noodles (oil-splashed noodles).
Day 4 | Chang'an Qinling leisure route
Route: Qinling Wildlife Park > Cuihua Mountain > South Wutai > Zhongnan Mountain > Changning Palace
The fourth day switches the itinerary to enjoy natural scenery.
For family trips, prioritize the Qinling Wildlife Park, which children will likely enjoy. If you want to see mountain and water scenery, you can go to Cuihua Mountain, where the mountain views and the Heavenly Lake are great for photos. South Wutai and Zhongnan Mountain are suitable for travelers who prefer quiet mountain scenery and are comfortable to visit when the weather is good.
You don't need to visit all the spots on this day; just pick 2 or 3 based on your energy levels. Family version: Qinling Wildlife Park + Changning Palace; Scenery version: Cuihua Mountain + South Wutai; Relaxed version: Slow stroll around Zhongnan Mountain.
Focus for the day: Moving from the ancient capital city into the Qinling Mountains.
Food recommendations: Jiaotuan (cornmeal paste), saozimian (noodle soup), corn cakes, and Bingfeng soda.
Day 5 | Guanzhong cultural & surroundings route
Route: Famen Temple > Qianling Mausoleum > Yuanjia Village > Maoling Mausoleum
The last day follows the Guanzhong cultural route.
Famen Temple is suitable for those who enjoy Buddhist culture and ancient architecture, as the buildings are magnificent. Qianling Mausoleum is a representative imperial tomb of the Tang Dynasty with a strong historical atmosphere. Head to Yuanjia Village in the afternoon to taste snacks and stroll through the folk streets at a relaxed pace.
If you have plenty of time, you can stop by Maoling Mausoleum, which is suitable for travelers who love Han Dynasty history. If you are short on time, you can skip Maoling and spend more time strolling and tasting snacks in Yuanjia Village.
Focus for the day: Experiencing Guanzhong history and folk snacks.
Food recommendations: Guokui (flatbread), youpo noodles, zenggao, sour plum drink, and various Guanzhong snacks.
Xi'an food recommendations
Beyond visiting attractions, the food is also worth experiencing when visiting Xi'an.
Classic food: Roujiamo, yangrou paomo, liangpi, biangbiang noodles, hulutou paomo.
Specialty snacks: Zenggao, soup dumplings, lazhirou jiamo (stewed meat burger), osmanthus persimmon cakes, sour plum drink.
Authentic Shaanxi cuisine: Hulu chicken, warm mixed pork waist strips, milk soup fish, fen tang yang xue (vermicelli soup with sheep blood), big plate chicken.
Night market barbecue: Lamb skewers, grilled kidneys, grilled gluten, grilled naan, grilled buns.
Souvenirs: Shizi mo (stone-baked bread), osmanthus persimmon cakes, cured beef, Jingyang Fucha tea, dried persimmons.
Tips
We recommend booking popular items like the Shaanxi History Museum, Terracotta Warriors, and "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" in advance.
Subway travel is convenient for city attractions; walking combined with the subway is suitable for the City Wall, Bell and Drum Towers, and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda areas.
The Lintong, Qinling, and Guanzhong lines are far from the city center, so we recommend starting early.
Portions of Xi'an dishes are on the larger side, so we recommend ordering a little at a time rather than ordering too much at once.
For night views, we recommend the Grand Tang All Day Mall, Bell and Drum Towers, and the City Wall area, as the atmosphere is better at night.
If this is your first time in Xi'an, referring to this 5-day route will likely help you avoid many pitfalls.
You can experience the profound historical heritage of the capital of 13 dynasties while also tasting authentic street food.
Xi'an is a city not just for taking photos, but for walking slowly, observing, and tasting.
