Nara Wakakusa-yama Fire Festival | Part One: Brilliant Fireworks

Finally witnessed the Nara Wakakusa-yama Fire Festival in person! Every January, clusters of bonfires light up the entire mountain, symbolizing the driving away of cold and praying for peace. This year, it happened to be on my itinerary, so I joined in and was truly amazed by this visual feast! 🔥 The Charm of the Fire Festival The firelight illuminates the night sky, with flames surrounding both the mountain top and base, creating a warm atmosphere that makes you forget the cold. Looking up at the firelight intertwined with the stars, you instantly feel like you’re in a fairy tale. 📸 Perfect for Photos Want to capture the most magical fireworks and flames? This festival will definitely satisfy you. Every second is a cinematic shot. Tips 1. Secure a good spot early; the view from the mountain is best. 2. It’s cold at night, so dress warmly and bring a scarf and heat packs in advance. 3. If you want to experience more local traditional rituals, arrive earlier for traditional dance and music performances. We skipped those and just wanted to see the fireworks and fire festival, so arriving before 5:15 PM at the foot of Wakakusa-yama is enough. Follow the crowd uphill—don’t be fooled by the people on the large lawn below, as that view is far and less impressive. You must climb up the mountain to a large slope to reach the best viewing spot. The fireworks show starts at 6:15 PM, and the fire festival begins at 6:30 PM. If you come to Nara around this time next year, don’t miss this stunning traditional festival held on the last Saturday of January every year! 🔥✨
