you have to travel to Chiayi or Taitung to travel to the most famous mountain in Taiwan, Alishan. recommend to take a train from Chiayi and enjoy the nature view up. we took the bus and felt it was bummy and many twist and turns. it took almost 1.5 hours to travel up to the main Alishan train station. you can then take a short rides to shen mu area. there are many famous love stories about the mountain.
