With an area of 25,000 square meters, it is the largest square in the city. It is used not only as a place of relaxation for citizens, but also as a venue for ceremonies, concerts, and other events. At the back of the square is the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, one of the most representative works of Italian neoclassical architecture, which was built in imitation of the Pantheon in Rome. In front of it is an equestrian statue by Antonio Canova modeled after Charles III of the Bourbon family and his son Ferdinand I. The orange building with a row of statues of past kings is the Royal Palace of Naples. It was built in 1600 as the residence of the Spanish governor who ruled Naples. Until the early 19th century, it was the residence of the Bourbon family, who held the throne of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Just a stone's throw from Piazza del Plebiscito is the coastal area known as the Santa Lucia district, famous for its folk songs.
