Yanhe River

#chinatravel We visited the Weihe River corridor (commonly referred to as the Yanhe River area in Xi’an) on a calm late afternoon, and found ourselves surprised by how green and restorative the landscapes had become. Once plagued by pollutants and neglected urban runoff, the riverbanks now feature lush vegetation, tidy footpaths, and natural wetlands. Walking along the water’s edge, we observed lotus beds and reeds gently swaying, and small flocks of birds resting near clear river channels. The city’s reclaimed-water initiative has turned the area into a surprisingly tranquil green space within an urban fabric that once felt harsh and industrial  . What stood out was how thoughtful restoration techniques turned a former eyesore into a welcoming ecological corridor. The lake fed by treated water is now ringed by a roughly 6.7‑kilometer walkway and sprinkled with trees and native plants planted since 2016. Locals gather here to walk, cycle, camp, or relax by the water, and even a lakeside café has opened to serve visitors drawn to the peaceful scenery. There were no intrusive attractions just open views, clean air, and a visible sense of renewal.
