The King of Western Chu's Play Horse Terrace

The Play Horse Terrace is located at the highest point of Hubu Mountain in the central district of Xuzhou City, and was originally one of the most famous ancient sites in Xuzhou. In 206 BC, the great hero Xiang Yu, after destroying the Qin dynasty, proclaimed himself the King of Western Chu and established his capital in Pengcheng (now Xuzhou). He built a terrace on the southern mountain, south of the city, for the purposes of watching horse plays, martial exercises, and military reviews, hence the name Play Horse Terrace. The Play Horse Terrace is one of the earliest existing ancient sites in Xuzhou. Over the dynasties, many buildings were constructed on the terrace, such as Tai Tou Temple, Sanyi Temple, Minghuan Shrine, Jukui Academy, Songcui Mountain House, and the Stele Pavilion.
