Gliding through the ancient waterways on a paddleboat added another layer of charm to the experience. The boatwoman’s melodious singing, with its soft Wu dialect tones, transported me back to the bustling water towns of ancient times. Exploring the town’s museums was a perfect way to delve into its rich history. The Taierzhuang Battle Memorial Park stood solemnly, its exhibits—historic photographs and weathered artifacts—silently recounting the heroic and poignant tales of wartime resistance. The Postal Museum showcased mailboxes, stamps, and postal tools from different eras, offering a nostalgic journey through the evolution of postal services. Meanwhile, the Canal Wine Culture Museum was steeped in the rich aroma of liquor, displaying brewing techniques, vintage vessels, and the profound wine culture along the Grand Canal. The next day, I was fortunate to witness the grand reenactment of Emperor Qianlong’s imperial procession. A majestic parade of performers in elaborate ancient costumes marched through the streets, with the emperor, resplendent in his dragon robe, leading the way amid guards and court attendants. The lively scene, with crowds lining the streets, felt like stepping straight into a page of imperial history. That evening, I dined at the Lakeside Moonlight Music Restaurant, savoring the town’s nocturnal ambiance. The elegant setting was the perfect backdrop for local delicacies: Zaozhuang spicy chicken, tender and bursting with fiery flavor; crispy pancake rolls with scallions, a rustic yet addictive combination; and fragrant spicy carp, its tender flesh swimming in a rich, savory sauce. As I indulged in these flavors, the soft music and enchanting night views of the ancient town made time seem to slow down, offering a moment of pure relaxation and joy.
