2026 Edinburgh Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

Getting There - places on top of ancient volcanic rock, it's very difficult to miss in the surrounding city. Take a walk up the royal mile to find the entrance. Attractions - this is a place to delve into royalty and history, it houses Mary Queen of Scots crown jewels, as well as military museums, dungeons where you can explore old and modern prisons, and 360 degree views or the surrounding city. Hotels - the royal mile is teeming with hotels including Premier Inn, Ibis and some smaller, independent hotels. Food & Restaurants - There are some small shops inside the museum selling snacks and water, there's also a cafe high up in the castle.

There are few cities in the world where just walking the streets is beautiful and like a museum in itself. Edinburgh mixes ancient volcanic rock, with modern wide streets to create a bustling epicenter where old meets new. Getting There - Edinburgh has it's own airport, train station (Waverly), and many national bus services for as little as £5. Attractions - explore the Royal Mile, but don't just stay on the main streets, there are many hidden squares behind the tall buildings which have beautiful statues and amazing history. Hotels - There are many hotel's in Edinburgh, ranging from cheap to branded hotels. For an authentic cheap experience, The Castle Rock Hostel has beautiful views of the castle from £18 per night (I've stayed here 4 times) Food & Restaurants - you must try a traditional haggis, anything deep fried, Tunnocks tea cakes are a must, irn bru, and of course whiskey.

Edinburgh is known for its numerous historic attractions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and rich history. I was so fascinated by its unique architecture and the hidden corners to discover, as almost feel like stepping back in time. Cockburn Street is a picturesque street in the Old Town, created as a serpentine link from Royal Mile to Waverley Station. Royal Mile is one of Edinburgh's most popular tourist area, primarily of note for its landmark buildings, historical sites and museums. It also has numerous cafes, pubs and shops. Advocate's Close is a narrow and steep alley in Edinburgh of medieval origin, the close is a narrow lane which connects the Royal Mile’s High Street to Cockburn Street.
